Cytotoxic triterpenoids from the leaves of Microtropis fokienensis.

Five new triterpenoids, microfokienoxanes A-D (1-4) and 3beta,28-dihydroxy-11alpha-methoxyurs-12-ene (5), were isolated and identified from the leaves of Microtropis fokienensis, along with nine known compounds. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The compounds obtained in this investigation were evaluated against a small panel of human cancer cell lines for cytotoxicity. Only compounds 3 and 5 exhibited cytotoxicity (IC50 < or = 5 microg/mL) for one or more cell lines.

Novel cytotoxic monotetrahydrofuranic Annonaceous acetogenins from Annona montana.

Four new monotetrahydrofuranic Annonaceous acetogenins, montalicins G (1) and H (2) and monlicins A (3) and B (4), and two new linear acetogenins, (+)-monhexocin (5) and (-)-monhexocin (6), as well as three known compounds, murisolin (7), 4-deoxyannomontacin (8), and muricatacin (9), were isolated from the seeds of Annona montana by high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method. The absolute stereochemical structures of new isolates were elucidated and characterized by spectral and chemical methods. Interestingly, these compounds show special cytotoxicity against human hepatoma cells, Hep G2.

Nine new cytotoxic monotetrahydrofuranic Annonaceous acetogenins from Annona montana.

Nine monotetrahydrofuranic Annonaceous acetogenins, montalicins A-E (1-5), cis-annoreticuin (6), montalicins F (7), I (8), and J (9), along with eight known acetogenins 10-17, were isolated from the seeds of Annona montana by a high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method. The structures of all new isolates were elucidated and characterized by spectroscopic and chemical methods. These monotetrahydrofuranic Annonaceous acetogenins showed selectively potent cytotoxicity against two human cancer cell lines, 1A9 and Hep G2.

Nursing home use for clinical rotations: taking a second look.

Because of the high acuity level of hospitalized clients and the rapid increase in aging populations, the placement of beginning fundamental students in a nursing home setting should be taken into more serious consideration. Thus, the purpose of the present paper was to describe the advantages and disadvantages of using nursing homes as clinical sites for baccalaureate of science in nursing education based on a comprehensive review of the literature. The main advantages are the wide spectrum of health needs, stable census, and regularly scheduled treatments in nursing homes. The main disadvantages are lack of adequate role models, lack of preparation and interest of the nursing faculty in working with the elderly, and potential for creating negative attitudes toward the elderly and their care.
