Multinuclear NMR spectroscopic and theoretical study on the interactions between diperoxovanadate complex and picoline-like ligands.

To understand the substituting effects of organic ligands on the reaction equilibrium, the interactions between diperoxovanadate complex [OV(O(2))(2)(H(2)O)](-) and a series of picoline-like ligands in solution were explored using 1D multinuclear ((1)H, (13)C, and (51)V) magnetic resonance, 2D diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), and variable temperature NMR in 0.15 mol/l NaCl ionic medium for mimicking the physiological conditions. The order of reactive capability of the picoline-like ligands with [OV(O(2))(2)(H(2)O)](-) is found to be picolinamide>N-methylpicolinamide>methyl picolinate>ethyl picolinate approximately propyl picoliniate>isopropyl picolinate. The substituting group influences the reactivity by either steric effect or electron-donating effect. Competitive coordination interactions result in a series of new seven-coordinated peroxovanadate species [OV(O(2))(2)L](-) (L=picoline-like ligands). Their coordination ways were confirmed by density functional calculations.

Theoretical formalism and experimental verification of line shapes of NMR intermolecular multiple-quantum coherence spectra.

Although the theories and potential applications of intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences (iMQCs) have been under active investigations for over a decade, discussion of iMQC NMR signal formation was mainly confined in the time domain. In this paper, a full line-shape theory was developed to describe iMQC signals in the frequency domain. Relevant features of the line shape, such as peak height, linewidth, and phase, were investigated in detail. Predictions based on the theory agree well with experimental and simulated results. Since radiation-damping effects always couple with iMQCs in highly polarized liquid-state NMR systems, and strongly radiation-damped signals have many spectral characteristics similar to those of iMQCs, a detailed comparison was also made between them from different spectral aspects. With detailed comparison of peak height, linewidth, and phase, this work demonstrates that the iMQC and radiation-damping phenomena result from two completely different physical mechanisms despite that both present similar signal features and coexist in highly polarized liquid-state NMR systems.

Investigation on the interactions between diperoxovanadate and substituted phenanthroline.

Detailed investigations were carried out to explore the interaction systems of NH4VO3/H2O2/5,6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline and NH4VO3/H2O2/5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline in aqueous solution under physiological conditions by NMR spectroscopy, such as 1D 1H, 13C, 51V variable temperature, and 2D COSY, NOESY, HETCOR, COLOC techniques as well as density functional calculations. New species [OV(O2)2(5,6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)]- and [OV(O2)2(5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline)]- including isomers were formed in a bidentate coordination fashion which were stable under the experimental conditions. The solution structures of these new species were proposed based on the direct NMR experimental information and confirmed by the theoretical calculations. All the 1H and 13C NMR peaks were assigned. The calculated 1H and 13C chemical shifts on the whole are in fair agreement with the experimental values. The methyl groups on the aromatic ring of the three new complexes were found to have a steric hindrance effect on the coordination process. Experimental results show that the order of coordination capability of phenanthroline and its derivants was: 1,10-phenanthroline>5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline>5,6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline.

A simulation algorithm based on Bloch equations and product operator matrix: application to dipolar and scalar couplings.

A product operator matrix is proposed to describe scalar couplings in liquid NMR. Combination of the product operator matrix and non-linear Bloch equations is employed to describe effects of chemical shift, translational diffusion, dipolar field, radiation damping, and relaxation in multiple spin systems with both scalar and dipolar couplings. A new simulation algorithm based on this approach is used to simulate NMR signals from dipolar field effects in the presence of scalar couplings. Several typical coupled spin systems with both intra-molecular scalar couplings and inter-molecular dipolar couplings are simulated. Monte Carlo methods are incorporated into simulations as well to analyze diffusion process in these complicated spin systems. The simulated results of diffusion and relaxation parameters and 2D NMR spectra are coincident with the experimental measurements, and agree with theoretical predictions as well. The simulation algorithm presented herein therefore provides a convenient means for designing pulse sequences and quantifying experimental results in complex coupled spin systems.

Spectroscopic studies on the interactions between a bioactive diperoxovanadate complex and pyridine.

Interactions between a bioactive diperoxovanadate complex K3[OV(O2)2(C2O4)].H2O and pyridine in solution were studied by 2D NMR diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) as well as 1D 1H, 13C, 14N, and 51V NMR, variable temperature 1H NMR and spin-lattice relaxation time. Competitive coordination between C2O(4)(2-) and pyridine to [OV(O2)(2)](-) were observed in solution. A new species [OV(O2)2(Py)](-) was formed and its NMR data were reported for the first time. The experimental results indicated that both of the vanadium atom in species [OV(O2)2(C2O4)](3-) and [OV(O2)2(Py)](-) are six coordinated in solution. The conclusion was further supported by the results of ESI-MS. The newly-formed species is stable under the condition of near physiological pH value.
