A dinuclear Ni(II) complex with two types of intramolecular magnetic couplings: Ni(II)-Ni(II) and Ni(II)-TTF*+.

A dinuclear Ni(II) complex involving tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) radicals as ligands has been prepared and characterized, [Ni2(mu-Cl)2(L*+)2(I3)4(I2)3.(H2O)2.(C4H8O)3 (1), L = 4,5-bis(2-pyridylmethylsulfanyl)-4',5'-ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene. There are two types of intramolecular magnetic exchange interactions, namely one ferromagnetic Ni(II)-Ni(II) and one antiferromagnetic Ni(II)-TTF*+. This study is new in the respect of revealing a magnetic exchange interaction between a TTF*+ radical and a paramagnetic transition metal ion. This is due to the fact of a direct binding of the transition metal ion to the skeleton of the TTF*+ radical.

Synthesis, structure and properties of {M4O4} cubanes containing nickel(II) and cobalt(II).

A survey of the crystal structures containing simple {M4O4} cubane units is reported. It shows that the average M-M distance in these complexes is relatively constant for a given metal ion M. The structures are all distorted from the idealised cube to a T(d) structure, and most show a further distortion which, however, usually maintains some elements of symmetry. A system for classifying the different types of ligand in these complexes is proposed. Two new cubanes of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) with the ligand (R,R)-bis-1,2-(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)ethane-1,2-diol, (R,R)- or its enantiomer have been isolated and the crystal structure of the cobalt(II) complex confirms the cubane structure. Electronic, CD and (1)H NMR spectra and magnetic susceptibility data are reported. The magnetic data for these and other compounds in the literature are discussed in terms of the structural parameters.

One-dimensional mu-chloromanganese(II)-tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) coordination compound.

A new tetrathiafulvalene derivative 1 bearing a single pyridine group and its coordination complex 2, with stoichiometry [Mn(mu-Cl)Cl(1)2(CH3OH)]n, have been synthesized and fully characterized. The complex 2 shows an extended chain structure, which is potentially favorable for electrical conductivity. Notably, this is the first monohalogen-bridged Mn(II) polymer exhibiting a moderate antiferromagnetic coupling between the Mn(II) centers.

A redox-active tri-star molecule: merging of TTF and HAT chemistry.

A planar pi-conjugated heteroaromatic molecule 1 has been synthesized and fully characterized; it combines two characteristics, a charge-transfer transition originating from its inherent donor-acceptor nature in its neutral state and an intervalence charge-transfer transition in its 1(2+) mixed-valence state.

An iron(III) phosphonate cluster containing a nonanuclear ring.

This communication reports the first example of cyclic ferric clusters with an odd number of iron atoms capped by phosphonate ligands, namely, [Fe9(mu-OH)(7)(mu-O)2(O3PC6H9)8(py)12]. The magnetic studies support a S = 1/2 ground state with an exchange coupling constant of about J approximately equal to -30 K.

Synthesis and electrochemical and photophysical studies of tetrathiafulvalene-annulated phthalocyanines.

The synthesis of tetrakis(tetrathiafulvalene)-annulated metal-free and metallophthalocyanines 5-8 via the tetramerization of the phthalonitrile derivative 4 is reported. All of them have been fully characterized by electronic absorption spectroscopy, thin-layer cyclic voltammetry, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Their solution electrochemical data show two reversible four-electron oxidation waves, indicating that these fused systems are strong pi-electron donors, which give rise to tetra- or octaradical cation species. For the metal-free phthalocyanine 5, additionally a reversible one-electron wave was found in the negative direction arising from the reduction of the macrocycle. Moreover, the tetrathiafulvalene unit acts as an efficient reductive electron-transfer quencher for the phthalocyanine emission, but upon its oxidation, an intense luminescence is switched on.

Self-assembly and interconversion of tetranuclear copper(II) complexes.

The ligand 1,2-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)-1,2-ethanediol (H2bzimed, 1) and its N-methylated analogue (H2mbzimed, 2) form a variety of polynuclear complexes with copper(II), all of which contain a planar Cu2O2 lozenge as a central element and in which the bridging oxygen belongs to an alkoxo group of the ligand. Syntheses are reported for dinuclear [Cu2(Hmbzimed)2](ClO4)2 x 1.5H2O, Cu(2)2(2), and the tetranuclear species [Cu4(Hbzimed)4(ClO4)2](NO3)2 x 4H2O, Cu(4)1(4), [Cu4(Hmbzimed)2(mbzimed)Cl2](ClO4)2 x 2H2O x C2H5OH, Cu(4)2(3), and rac-[Cu4(H2bzimed)4(bzimed)(ClO4)2](ClO4)4 x 1.5H2O x 3.5C2H5OH, Cu(4)1(5). Crystal structures are reported for the tetranuclear species. Cu(4)1(4) shows a cubane structure, Cu(4)2(3) a stepped cubane structure, and rac-Cu(4)1(5) a novel structure in which one doubly deprotonated ligand lies between the two Cu2O2 units. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that all complexes show antiferromagnetic coupling in the solid state. Studies in solution (ESI-MS, CD, NMR) show that Cu(2)2(2) and Cu(4)2(3) persist in solution but that Cu(4)1(4) dissociates partially and rac-Cu(4)1(5) completely. The six coordination modes of the ligands are discussed together with the effect of the N-methylation on the ligand conformation.

Cyano-bridged structures based on [MnIIN3O2-macrocycle)]2+: a synthetic, structural, and magnetic study.

Reactions between the complex [MnII(L)]2+, where L is a N3O2 macrocyclic ligand, and different cyanometalate precursors such as [M(CN)n]m- (M(III) = Cr, Fe; M(II) = Fe, Ni, Pd, Pt) lead to cyano-bridged molecular assemblies exhibiting a variety of structural topologies. The reaction between [MnII(L)]2+ and [FeII(CN)6]4- forms a trinuclear complex with formula [(MnII(L)(H2O))2(FeII(micro-CN)2(CN)4)] x 2MeOH x 10H2O (1) which crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1. The reaction between [MnII(L)]2+ and [M(II)(CN)4]2-, where M(II) = Ni (2), Pd (3), Pt (4), gives rise to three isostructural linear chain compounds with stoichiometry [(MnII(L))(M(II)(micro-CN)2(CN)2)]n and which crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The self-assembly between [MnII(L)]2+ with [M(III)(CN)6]3-, where M(III) = Cr (5), Fe (6, 7, 8), forms three types of compounds. Compounds 5 and 6 are isostructural (monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n), and the structures comprise anionic linear chains [(MnII(L))(M(III)(micro-CN)2(CN)4)]n(n-) with cationic trinuclear complexes [(MnII(L)(H2O))2(M(III)(micro-CN)2(CN)4)]+ as counterions. Using an excess of K3[FeIII(CN)6], an analogous compound to 6 but with K+ as counterion is obtained (7), which crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1. Compound 8 consists of 2-D layers with formula [(MnII(L))3(FeIII(micro-CN)4(CN)2)(FeIII(micro-CN)2(CN)4)]n x 2nMeOH; it crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n. The magnetic properties were investigated for all samples. In particular, compound 5, which shows antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between Mn(II) and Cr(III) ions through cyanide bridging ligands, has been studied in detail; the magnetic exchange parameter amounts to J = -7.5(7) cm(-1). Compound 8 shows a magnetically ordered phase below 6.4 K which is confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy; two hyperfine split spectra were observed below Tc from which IJI values of 2.1 and 1.6 cm(-1) could be deduced.

Crystalline, mixed-valence manganese analogue of prussian blue: magnetic, spectroscopic, X-ray and neutron diffraction studies.

The compound of stoichiometry Mn(II)3[Mn(III)(CN)6]2.zH2O (z = 12-16) (1) forms air-stable, transparent red crystals. Low-temperature single crystal optical spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction provide compelling evidence for N-bonded high-spin manganese(II), and C-bonded low-spin manganese(III) ions arranged in a disordered, face-centered cubic lattice analogous to that of Prussian Blue. X-ray and neutron diffraction show structured diffuse scattering indicative of partially correlated (rather than random) substitutions of [Mn(III)(CN)6] ions by (H2O)6 clusters. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and elastic neutron scattering experiments indicate a ferrimagnetic structure below the critical temperature Tc = 35.5 K.

Structural studies of transition metal complexes with 4,5-bis(2-pyridylmethylsulfanyl)-4',5'-ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene: probing their potential for the construction of multifunctional molecular assemblies.

Three divalent transition metal complexes of 4,5-bis(2-pyridylmethylsulfanyl)-4',5'-ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene have been prepared and crystallographically characterized. The isostructural Co(II) and the Ni(II) complexes show octahedral geometries around the metal ions with the coordination sites occupied by the pyridyl nitrogen atoms and the thioether sulfur atoms of the ligand and cis coordination of the halide ions. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that the complexation leads to a small anodic shift in the first oxidation potential of the TTF system.

Iron-promoted nucleophilic additions to diimine-type ligands: a synthetic and structural study.

We report here three examples of the reactivity of protic nucleophiles with diimine-type ligands in the presence of Fe(II) salts. In the first case, the iron-promoted alcoholysis reaction of one nitrile group of the ligand 2,3-dicyano-5,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-pyrazine (L1) permitted the isolation of an stable E-imido-ester, [Fe(L1')(2)](CF(3)SO(3))(2) (1), which has been characterized by spectroscopic studies (IR, ES-MS, Mössbauer), elemental analysis, and crystallographically. Compound 1 consists of mononuclear octahedrally coordinated Fe(II) complexes where the Fe(II) ion is in its low-spin state. The iron-mediated nucleophilic attack of water to the asymmetric ligand 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrido[3,4-b]pyrazine (L2) has also been studied. In this context, the crystal structures of two hydration-oxidation Fe(III) products, [Fe(L2')(2)](ClO(4))(3).3CH(3)CN (2) and trans-[FeL2"Cl(2)] (3), are described. Compounds 2 and 3 are both mononuclear Fe(III) complexes where the metals occupy octahedral positions. In principle, L2 is expected to coordinate to metal ions through its bipyridine-type units to form a five-membered ring; however, this is not the case in compounds 2 and 3. In 2, the ligand coordinates through its pyridines and through the hydroxyl group attached to the pyrazine imino carbon after hydration, that is, in an N,O,N tridentate manner. In compound 3, the ligand has suffered further transformations leading to a very stable diamido complex. In this case, the metal ion achieves its octahedral geometry by means of two pyridines, two amido N atoms, and two axial chlorine atoms. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed the spin state of these two Fe(III) species: compounds 2 and 3 are low-spin and high-spin, respectively.

High-spin molecules: synthesis, X-ray characterization, and magnetic behavior of two new cyano-bridged Ni(II)(9)Mo(V)(6) and Ni(II)(9)W(V)(6) clusters with a S = 12 ground state.

The preparations, X-ray structures, and magnetic characterizations are presented for two new pentadecanuclear cluster compounds: [Ni(II)(Ni(II)(MeOH)(3))(8)(mu-CN)(30)(M(V)(CN)(3))(6)].xMeOH.yH(2)O (M(V) = Mo(V) (1) with x = 17, y = 1; M(V) = W(V) (2) with x = 15, y = 0). Both compounds crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c, with cell dimensions of a = 28.4957(18) A, b = 19.2583(10) A, c = 32.4279(17) A, beta = 113.155(6) degrees, and Z = 4 for 1 and a = 28.5278(16) A, b = 19.2008(18) A, c = 32.4072(17) A, beta = 113.727(6) degrees, and Z = 4 for 2. The structures of 1 and 2 consist of neutral cluster complexes comprising 15 metal ions, 9 Ni(II) and 6 M(V), all linked by mu-cyano ligands. Magnetic susceptibilities and magnetization measurements of compounds 1 and 2 in the crystalline and dissolved state indicate that these clusters have a S = 12 ground state, originating from intracluster ferromagnetic exchange interactions between the mu-cyano-bridged metal ions of the type Ni(II)-NC-M(V). Indeed, these data show clearly that the cluster molecules stay intact in solution. Ac magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that the cluster compounds exhibit magnetic susceptibility relaxation phenomena at low temperatures since, with nonzero dc fields, chi"(M) has a nonzero value that is frequency dependent. However, there appears no out-of-phase (chi"(M)) signal in zero dc field down to 1.8 K, which excludes the expected signature for a single molecule magnet. This finding is confirmed with the small uniaxial magnetic anisotropy value for D of 0.015 cm(-1), deduced from the high-field, high-frequency EPR measurement, which distinctly reveals a positive sign in D. Obviously, the overall magnetic anisotropy of the compounds is too low, and this may be a consequence of a small single ion magnetic anisotropy combined with the highly symmetric arrangement of the metal ions in the cluster molecule.

An unusual (10,3)-a racemic twofold interpenetrating network assembled from isolable tris(cyclopentadienyl)manganate and cesocene building blocks.

The syntheses and X-ray crystal structures of [([18]crown-6)2Cs](+)-[Cp3Mn]- (1), [([18]crown-6)2Cs](+)-[Cp'3Mn]- (2), [CsCp'] (3), [(CsCp')2-([18]crown-6)] (4), and Cs[MnCp3] (5), and the synthesis of Cs[MnCp'3] (6) are reported (Cp' = C5H4Me). The anions [Cp3Mn]- (1-) and [Cp'3Mn]- (2-) are characterized by eta 2 coordination of all three Cp or Cp' rings. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibilities chi M resulted in values of mu eff = 6.20 microB (300 K), mu eff = 6.33 microB (301 K), and mu eff = 5.83 microB (300 K) for 1, 2, and 5, respectively, which are indicative of high-spin d5-Mn2+ centers. Density functional calculations illustrate that the coordination mode of 1- is characteristic for its sextet electronic ground state. Compound 3 forms infinite chains of cesocene-type sandwiches in the solid state, which are broken up into small subunits by the addition of crown ether to form 4. Compound 5 is a rare example of a (10,3)-a racemic interpenetrating network that crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca.

Facile synthesis of novel functionalized bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) derivatives.

An improved and efficient synthetic route to four functionalized bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) derivatives 2-5 is reported. Tetrathiolate 1 was readily prepared from 2,2'-bis(1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalen-5-one) under carefully controlled conditions. Subsequent reaction of 1 with selected primary alkyl halides affords new functionalized BEDT-TTF derivatives in good yields.

Molecular-Based Magnetism in Bimetallic Two-Dimensional Oxalate-Bridged Networks. An X-ray and Neutron Diffraction Study.

Bimetallic, oxalate-bridged compounds with bi- and trivalent transition metals comprise a class of layered materials which express a large variety in their molecular-based magnetic behavior. Because of this, the availability of the corresponding single-crystal structural data is essential to the successful interpretation of the experimental magnetic results. We report in this paper the crystal structure and magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic compound {[N(n-C(3)H(7))(4)][Mn(II)Cr(III)(C(2)O(4))(3)]}(n)() (1), the crystal structure of the antiferromagnetic compound {[N(n-C(4)H(9))(4)][Mn(II)Fe(III)(C(2)O(4))(3)]}(n)() (2), and the results of a neutron diffraction study of a polycrystalline sample of the ferromagnetic compound {[P(C(6)D(5))(4)][Mn(II)Cr(III)(C(2)O(4))(3)]}(n)() (3). Crystal data: 1, rhombohedral, R3c, a = 9.363(3) Å, c = 49.207(27) Å, Z = 6; 2, hexagonal, P6(3), a = 9.482(2) Å, c = 17.827(8) Å, Z = 2. The structures consist of anionic, two-dimensional, honeycomb networks formed by the oxalate-bridged metal ions, interleaved by the templating cations. Single-crystal field dependent magnetization measurements as well as elastic neutron scattering experiments on the manganese(II)-chromium(III) samples show the existence of long-range ferromagnetic ordering behavior below T(c) = 6 K. The magnetic structure corresponds to an alignment of the spins perpendicular to the network layers. In contrast, the manganese(II)-iron(III) compound expresses a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering.
