Luminescent Pt(II)(bipyridyl)(diacetylide) chromophores with pendant binding sites as energy donors for sensitised near-infrared emission from lanthanides: structures and photophysics of Pt(II)/Ln(III) assemblies.

The complexes [Pt(bipy){CC-(4-pyridyl)}(2)] (1) and [Pt(tBu(2)bipy){CC-(4-pyridyl)}(2)] (2) and [Pt(tBu(2)-bipy)(CC-phen)(2)] (3) all contain a Pt(bipy)(diacetylide) core with pendant 4-pyridyl (1 and 2) or phenanthroline (3) units which can be coordinated to {Ln(diketonate)(3)} fragments (Ln = a lanthanide) to make covalently-linked Pt(II)/Ln(III) polynuclear assemblies in which the Pt(II) chromophore, absorbing in the visible region, can be used to sensitise near-infrared luminescence from the Ln(III) centres. For 1 and 2 one-dimensional coordination polymers [1Ln(tta)(3)](infinity) and [2Ln(hfac)(3)](infinity) are formed, whereas 3 forms trinuclear adducts [3{Ln(hfac)(3)}(2)] (tta=anion of thenoyl-trifluoroacetone; hfac=anion of hexafluoroacetylacetone). Complexes 1-3 show typical Pt(II)-based (3)MLCT luminescence in solution at approximately 510 nm, but in the coordination polymers [1Ln(tta)(3)](infinity) and [2Ln(hfac)(3)](infinity) the presence of stacked pairs of Pt(II) units with short PtPt distances means that the chromophores have (3)MMLCT character and emit at lower energy ( approximately 630 nm). Photophysical studies in solution and in the solid state show that the (3)MMLCT luminescence in [1Ln(tta)(3)](infinity) and [2Ln(hfac)(3)](infinity) in the solid state, and the (3)MLCT emission of [3{Ln(hfac)(3)}(2)] in solution and the solid state, is quenched by Pt-->Ln energy transfer when the lanthanide has low-energy f-f excited states which can act as energy acceptors (Ln=Yb, Nd, Er, Pr). This results in sensitised near-infrared luminescence from the Ln(III) units. The extent of quenching of the Pt(II)-based emission, and the Pt-->Ln energy-transfer rates, can vary over a wide range according to how effective each Ln(III) ion is at acting as an energy acceptor, with Yb(III) usually providing the least quenching (slowest Pt-->Ln energy transfer) and either Nd(III) or Er(III) providing the most (fastest Pt-->Ln energy transfer) according to which one has the best overlap of its f-f absorption manifold with the Pt(II)-based luminescence.

Five-coordinate Pd(II) orthometallated triarylphosphite complexes.

The reaction of the orthopalladated triarylphosphite complexes [{Pd(mu-Cl){kappa(2)-P,C-P(OC(6)H(2)-2,4-R(2))(OC(6)H(3)-2,4-R(2))}(2)] (R = H, (t)Bu) with bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)phenylphosphine leads to a five-coordinate palladium(II) (R = H) and a mixture containing four-and five-coordinate species (R = (t)Bu). The crystal structure of the five-coordinate species [Pd{kappa(2)-P,C-(P(OC(6)H(4))(OC(6)H(5))(2)}{bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)phenylphosphine}][SbF(6)] is presented. This complex reacts with hydrogen peroxide or [AuCl(tht)] to give four-coordinate complexes in which the displaced phosphine residue is either oxidised or coordinated to gold chloride; this demonstrates that the five-coordinate complexes are labile in solution. By contrast, the reactions of the dimeric precursors with 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane give four-coordinate complexes in the solid state, although evidence is presented that the smaller phosphite-containing system is five-coordinate at room temperature or higher in solution.

Intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of dihydroimidazolium ylides: synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2,3-de]quinoxalines and imidazo[1,2-a]indoles.

N-Alkylation of 4,5-dihydroimidazoles with alkene-containing bromomethyl ketones and treatment of the so-formed 4,5-dihydroimidazolium ions with DBU gives rise to an intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction that affords (via a reaction cascade involving eliminative ring-opening, recyclisation and prototropic tautomerism) unexpected hexahydropyrrolo[1,2,3-de]quinoxaline products. Steric bulk in both the dihydroimidazole and the dipolarophile allows isolation of an imidazo[1,2-a]indole, the initial product of cycloaddition. When the bromomethyl ketone contains no other functionality, or when cycloaddition is inhibited due to steric constraints, the dihydroimidazolium ion undergoes ring-opening hydrolysis followed by recyclization of the exposed amino ketone to afford either 3-alkyl-1-formylpiperazine-2-ones or 3-aryl-1-formyl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrazines.

Fluoride anion binding by cyclic boronic esters: influence of backbone chelate on receptor integrity.

A systematic investigation of fluoride anion binding properties as a function of chelate backbone has been carried out for ferrocene functionalised boronic esters of the types FcB(OR)2 and fc[B(OR)2]2 [Fc = ferrocenyl = (eta5-C5H5)Fe(eta5-C5H4); fc = ferrocendiyl = Fe(eta5-C5H4)2]. Cyclic boronic esters containing a saturated five- or six-membered chelate ring are readily synthesized from ferrocene, and selectively bind fluoride via Lewis acid/base chemistry in chloroform solution. The resulting complexes are characterized by relatively weak fluoride binding (e.g.K = 35.8 +/- 9.8 M(-1) for FcBO2C2H2Ph2-S,S), and by cathodic shifts in the ferrocene oxidation potential that form the basis for electrochemical or colorimetric fluoride detection. The fluoride selectivity of these systems is attributed to relatively weak Lewis acidity, resulting in weak F- binding, and essentially no binding of potentially competitive anions. By contrast, more elaborate Lewis acid frameworks based on calix[4]arene (calixH4), such as (FcB)2calix or fcB2calix, do not survive intact exposure to standard fluoride sources (e.g. [nBu4N]F.xH2O solutions in chloroform or acetonitrile). Instead B-O bond cleavage occurs yielding the parent calixarene; the differences between alkoxo- and aryloxo-functionalised derivatives can be rationalised, at least in part, by consideration of the differences in electron donating capabilities of RO- (R = alkyl, aryl).

Structural investigations of phosphorus-nitrogen compounds. 7. Relationships between physical properties, electron densities, reaction mechanisms and hydrogen-bonding motifs of N3P3Cl(6 - n)(NHBu(t))n derivatives.

A series of compounds of the N3P3Cl(6 - n)(NHBu(t))n family (where n = 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6) are presented, and their molecular parameters are related to trends in physical properties, which provides insight into a potential reaction mechanism for nucleophilic substitution. The crystal structures of N3P3Cl5(NHBu(t)) and N3P3Cl2(NHBu(t))4 have been determined at 120 K, and those of N3P3Cl6 and N3P3Cl4(NHBu(t))2 have been redetermined at 120 K. These are compared with the known structure of N3P3(NHBu(t))6 studied at 150 K. Trends in molecular parameters [phosphazene ring, P-Cl and P-N(HBu(t)) distances, PCl2 angles, and endo- and exocyclic phosphazene ring parameters] across the series are observed. Hydrogen-bonding motifs are identified, characterized and compared. Both the molecular and the hydrogen-bonding parameters are related to the electron distribution in bonds and the derived basicities of the cyclophosphazene series of compounds. These findings provide evidence for a proposed mechanism for nucleophilic substitution at a phosphorus site bearing a PCl(NHBu(t)) group.

The structural and stereogenic properties of pentaerythritoxy-bridged cyclotriphosphazene derivatives: spiro-spiro, spiro-ansa and ansa-ansa isomers.

Reactions of pentaerythritol with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene, N3P3Cl6, and gem-disubstituted cyclotriphosphazene derivatives, N3P3Cl4R2 [R = Ph, NHBu(t) or (OCH2CF2CF2CH2O)0.5] gave a series of pentaerythritol-bridged derivatives linked spiro-spiro, spiro-ansa and ansa-ansa. The structures and stereogenic properties of the products were characterised by X-ray crystallography and 31P NMR spectroscopy on addition of the chiral solvating agent, (S)-(+)-2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(9-anthryl)ethanol. Molecules with spiro-spiro and spiro-ansa bridged gem-disubstituted cyclophosphazenes [R = Ph, NHBu(t) or (OCH2CF2CF2CH2O)0.5] are found to be chiral and exist as racemates. Molecules with ansa-ansa bridged cyclophosphazenes [R = Cl or (OCH2CF2CF2CH2O)0.5] have been characterised for the first time and are shown to have meso configurations. Analysis of crystal structure data shows that the six-membered chair form of the spiro rings and the eight-membered boat-chair form of the ansa rings in the bridged compounds are similar to analogous spiro and ansa exocyclic ring conformations of 1,3-propanedioxy-derivatives of cyclophosphazenes.

Intra- and intermolecular N-H...F-C hydrogen-bonding interactions in amine adducts of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane and -alane.

The reaction between B(C(6)F(5))(3) and NH(3)(g) in light petroleum yielded the solvated adduct H(3)N.B(C(6)F(5))(3).NH(3). Treatment with a second equivalent of B(C(6)F(5))(3) afforded H(3)N.B(C(6)F(5))(3). Attempts to prepare the analogous alane adduct were unsuccessful and resulted in protolysis. Related compounds of the form R'R' 'N(H).M(C(6)F(5))(3) were synthesized from M(C(6)F(5))(3) and the corresponding primary and secondary amines (M = B, Al; R' = H, Me, CH(2)Ph; R' ' = Me, CH(2)Ph, CH(Me)(Ph); R'R' ' = cyclo-C(5)H(10)). The solid-state structures of 13 new compounds have been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and are discussed. Each of the borane adducts has a significant bifurcated intramolecular hydrogen bond between an amino hydrogen and two o-fluorines, while N-H...F-C interactions in the alane adducts are weaker and more variable. (19)F NMR studies demonstrate that the borane adducts retain the bifurcated C-F...H...F-C hydrogen bond in solution. Compounds of the type R'R' 'N(H).M(C(6)F(5))(3) conform to Etter's rules for the prediction of hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Hybrid catalysts: the synthesis, structure and ethene polymerisation activity of (salicylaldiminato)(pyrrolylaldiminato) titanium complexes.

The mono(salicylaldiminato) complexes Ti{3-tBu-2-(O)C6H3CH=N(R)}Cl3(THF)(where R = C6H5, C6F5) react with the metallated pyrrolylaldiminato ligand, K[2-(C6H5NCH)C4H3N], to afford the first examples of hybrid salicylaldiminato-ligated octahedral titanium complexes; the pre-catalysts give from very high to extremely high ethene polymerisation productivities when activated with MAO.

New bis-, tris- and tetrakis(pyrazolyl)borate ligands with 3-pyridyl and 4-pyridyl substituents: synthesis and coordination chemistry.

The new ligands dihydrobis[3-(4-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate [Bp(4py)]-, hydrotris[3-(4-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate [Tp(4py)]-, tetrakis[3-(4-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate [Tkp(4py)]-, dihydrobis[3-(3-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate [Bp(3py)]-, hydrotris[3-(3-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate [Tp(3py)]- and tetrakis[3-(3-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate [Tkp(4py)]- are derivatives of the well known bis-, tris- and tetrakis-(pyrazolyl)borate cores, bearing 4-pyridyl or 3-pyridyl substituents attached to the pyrazolyl C3 positions. These pyridyl groups cannot chelate to the metal ions in the poly(pyrazolyl) cavity but are externally directed. Structural studies on a range of metal complexes show how, in many cases, coordination of these pendant pyridyl groups to the M(pyrazolyl)n core of an adjacent metal complex fragment results in formation of coordination oligomers or polymeric networks. [Tl(Bp(3py))], [Tl(Bp(4py))] and [Tl(Tp(4py))] form one-dimensional polymeric chains via coordination of one of their pendant pyridyl units to the Tl(I) centre of an adjacent complex fragment; in contrast, in [Tl(Tp(3py))] coordination of all three pendant pyridyl units to separate Tl(I) neighbours results in formation of a two-dimensional polymeric sheet. In [Tl(Tkp(3py))] and [Tl(Tkp(4py))] the Tl(I) is coordinated by two or three of the four pyrazolyl arms, respectively; bridging interactions of pendant 4-pyridyl groups with adjacent Tl(I) centres result in a two-dimensional sheet forming in each case. In Ag(Tkp(4py)) each Ag(I) ion is coordinated by two pyrazolyl rings, and two bridging pyridyl ligands from other complex units, resulting in a one-dimensional chain consisting of pairs of cross-linked zigzag chains. In contrast to these polymeric coordination networks, the structures of [Cu(Tp(4py))] and [(Tp(3py))Cd(CH3CO2)] are dimers, with a pendant pyridyl residue from the first metal centre attaching to a vacant coordination site on the second, and vice versa; these dimers are stabilised by pi-stacking interactions between sections of the two ligands. [Ni(Tp(3py))2] is monomeric, with an octahedral coordination geometry arising from two tris(pyrazolyl)borate chelates; the array of pendant 3-pyridyl groups is involved only in intramolecular hydrogen-bonding. [(Tp(4py))Re(CO)3] is also monomeric, with a facial arrangement of three pyrazolyl ligands and three carbonyls, with the pendant 4-pyridyl groups not further coordinated. [(Tp(2py))Re(CO)3], based on the related ligand hydrotris[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate, has a similar fac-(CO)3(pyrazolyl)3 coordination geometry.

An extensive study of bromination of cis,trans,trans-1,5,9-cyclododecatriene: product structures and conformations.

Bromine has been added to cis,trans,trans-1,5,9-cyclododecatriene under various reaction conditions. All expected direct addition products have been isolated, and their structures have been determined by microanalysis, NMR and X-ray crystallography. Advanced NMR techniques were used to determine solution conformations of several of the compounds, enabling comparison with the solid-state conformations obtained by crystallography.

Syntheses and properties of two-dimensional charged nonlinear optical chromophores incorporating redox-switchable cis-tetraammineruthenium(II) centers.

In this article, we describe a series of new complex salts in which electron-donating cis-{Ru(II)(NH3)(4)}(2+) centers are connected to two electron-accepting N-methyl/aryl-pyridinium groups. These V-shaped complexes contain either monodentate 4,4'-bipyridyl-derived ligands or related chelates based on 2,2':4,4":4',4'''-quaterpyridyl and have been characterized by using various techniques including electronic absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Molecular quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) responses beta have been determined by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering at 800 nm and also via Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopic studies on the intense, visible d --> pi metal-to-ligand charge-transfer bands. These experiments reveal that these dipolar pseudo-C(2v)chromophores exhibit two substantial components of the beta tensor, beta(zzz)and beta(zyy), with the difference between them being most marked for the nonchelated systems. Time-dependent density-functional theory and finite field calculations serve to further illuminate the electronic structures and associated linear and NLO properties of the new chromophoric salts.

Macropolyhedral boron-containing cluster chemistry. The reaction of B16H20 and B14H18 with [PtMe2(PMe2Ph)2] to give [(PMe2Ph)2PtB16H17Me] and [(PMe2Ph)2PtB14H16].

Structurally characterised 17-vertex [(PMe2Ph)2PtB16H17Me] 3 is obtained, albeit in low yield, by platination of 16-vertex B16H20 1 using [PtMe2(PMe2Ph)2] under mild conditions. Platination has occurred on the {B10} subcluster of 1, interesting in that B16H20 itself deprotonates on the {B8} subcluster: the reference 16-vertex [B16H19]- anion 1a, prepared by deprotonation of 1 with 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene, is also structurally characterised. [PtMe2(PMe2Ph)2] with 14-vertex B14H18 2 similarly gives a low yield of 15-vertex [(PMe2Ph)2PtB14H16] 5, of formulation and structure substantiated by DFT calculations.

Polystyrene-supported dicyclohexylphenylphosphine adducts of amine- and phosphite-based palladacycles in the Suzuki coupling of aryl chlorides.

The polystyrene-immobilised palladacyclic complexes [Pd(TFA)(kappa2-N,C-C6H4CH2NMe2){P(C6H4-4-PS)Cy2}] and [PdCl(kappa2-P,C-{P(OC6H2-2,4-tBu2)(OC6H3-2,4-tBu2)2}{P(C6H4-4-PS)Cy2}](PS = polystyrene) and the homogeneous analogues [Pd(TFA)(kappa2-N,C-C6H4CH2NMe2)(PPhCy2)] and PdCl(kappa2-P,C-{P(OC6H2-2,4-tBu2)(OC6H3-2,4-tBu2)2}(PPhCy2)] were synthesised and characterised. The X-ray structure of one of the homogeneous analogues, [Pd(TFA)(kappa2-N,C-C6H4CH2NMe2)(PPhCy2)] was determined. All the complexes have been tested and show good activity in the Suzuki coupling of aryl chloride substrates. While the polystyrene-immobilised complexes are not recyclable, they are easily extracted and show low levels of palladium leaching.

The synthesis, structure and ethene polymerisation catalysis of mono(salicylaldiminato) titanium and zirconium complexes.

The silyl ethers 3-But-2-(OSiMe3)C6H3CH=NR (2a-e) have been prepared by deprotonation of the known iminophenols (1a-e) and treatment with SiClMe3 (a, R = C6H5; b, R = 2,6-Pri2C6H3; c, R = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2; d, R = 2-C6H5C6H4; e, R = C6F5). 2a-c react with TiCl4 in hydrocarbon solvents to give the binuclear complexes [Ti{3-But-2-(O)C6H3CH=N(R)}Cl(mu-Cl3)TiCl3] (3a-c). The pentafluorophenyl species 2e reacts with TiCl4 to give the known complex Ti{3-But-2-(O)C6H3CH=N(R)}2Cl2. The mononuclear five-coordinate complex, Ti{3-But-2-(O)C6H3CH=N(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)}Cl3 (4c), was isolated after repeated recrystallisation of 3c. Performing the dehalosilylation reaction in the presence of tetrahydrofuran yields the octahedral, mononuclear complexes Ti{3-But-2-(O)C6H3CH=N(R)}Cl3(THF) (5a-e). The reaction with ZrCl4(THF)2 proceeds similarly to give complexes Zr{3-But-2-(O)C6H3CH=N(R)}Cl3(THF) (6b-e). The crystal structures of 3b, 4c, 5a, 5c, 5e, 6b, 6d, 6e and the salicylaldehyde titanium complex Ti{3-But-2-(O)C6H3CH=O}Cl3(THF) (7) have been determined. Activation of complexes 5a-e and 6b-e with MAO in an ethene saturated toluene solution gives polyethylene with at best high activity depending on the imine substituent.

Synthesis and anti-amoebic activity of gold(I), ruthenium(II), and copper(II) complexes of metronidazole.

A series of Au, Ru, and Cu complexes of metronidazole (= [1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole; 1) were prepared as highly potent anti-amoebic drugs. The complexes [Au(PPh3)(1)]PF6 (2), [Ru(1)2(Cl)2(H2O)2] (3), and [Cu(1)2(mu-Cl)(H2O)]2Cl2 (4) were readily synthesized from [Au(PPh3)Cl], RuCl3 x 3 H2O, and CuCl2 x 2 H2O, respectively. All complexes were thoroughly characterized by IR, UV/VIS, 1H-NMR, FAB-MS, elemental and thermogravimetric analyses, and, in the case of 4, also by X-ray crystallography (Fig. 1). All complexes were evaluated in vitro as growth inhibitors of Entamoeba histolytica (HM1:IMSS strain). Their IC50 values were in the range of 0.10-0.51 microM (Table 2), which makes these drugs, especially the Cu(II) complex 4, considerably more potent than uncomplexed metronidazole (1; IC50 = 1.81 microM), the current standard drug for the worldwide treatment of amoebiasis.
