Submandibular tuberculous lymphadenitis after endodontic treatment of the mandibular first premolar tooth: report of a case.

Cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis (scrofula) is an infectious granulomatous disease that requires a precise diagnosis. The differential diagnosis involves mainly the pathologic conditions involving the regional lymph nodes and the submandibulary salivary glands. Although tuberculous lesions generally develop secondary to pulmonary disease, clinical manifestations are occasionally seen with no evidence of involvement of the lungs. In this report, a case of tuberculous submandibular lymphadenitis developing after endodontic treatment of the mandibular first premolar tooth is described.

A one-year review of craniofacial injuries in amateur soccer players.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the rate of craniofacial injuries in amateur soccer and help us better understand the nature of these injuries. Retrospective study was carried out using records from the patients with craniofacial injuries associated with soccer activities. All data were collected on the basis of sex, age, type and anatomic site of the injury. In the one-year period of this study, 11/53 cases with craniofacial injuries associated with soccer activities have been treated in our clinic. The highest incidence was in the 18 to 24 year age group (mean age 20.7) with male propensity. The majority of the patients suffered from dento-alveolar fractures (36%), followed by temporomandibular joint disorders (27%), mandibular fractures (27%), and nasal fractures (9%). The most common cause of the fractures was impact against another player (63.6%), followed by impact against equipment (18.2%) and impact against the ground (18.2%). These results show that there is a high risk of potential oral and craniofacial injury during soccer activities.

Ectopic eruption of a maxillary third molar tooth in the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Ectopic eruption of teeth into regions other than the oral cavity is rare although there have been reports of teeth in the nasal septum, mandibular condyle, coronoid process, palate, chin, and maxillary sinus. Occasionally, a tooth may erupt in the maxillary sinus and present with local sinonasal symptoms attributed to chronic sinusitis. We present a case of an ectopic maxillary third molar tooth that caused chronic sinusitis in the maxillary sinus.

Evaluation of the anti-inflammatory effect of erythromycin on aseptic inflammation of temporomandibular joint in rabbit: a scintigraphic and histopathologic study.

This article investigates the anti-inflammatory effects of erythromycin (EM) on aseptic inflammation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) space using by Tc-99 m HIG scintigraphy and histopathology. In this experimental study, 33 adult male New Zealand White rabbits were divided into three groups. The animals in the first group were treated with EM 25 mg kg(-1); the animals in the second group were treated with methylprednisolone (MP) 2 mg kg(-1) and the animals in the third group were given saline solution (control group). Each drug was given by intraperitoneal injection twice a day for 7 days. Two hours after the last injection, carrageenan was injected into right TMJ of rabbits for aseptic inflammation. After carrageenan injection, each rabbit was given an intravenous injection of 111 Mbq (3 mCi) Tc-99 m human HIG, and scanning was performed 4 h later. Later, all animals were killed and TMJ and periarticular tissues were resected. Histopathologically, the distance between synovial surface epithelium (SSE) and muscle layer (ML) in each section was measured by using SAMBA 200 Cell image processor with software. Scintigraphically, when lesion activity/adjacent region activity (L/N) was evaluated there was a significant difference between the control group and the other two groups (P < 0.05 for EM and MP). However, no significant difference was found between the EM and MP groups. Histopathologically, the mean distance between SSE and ML in the sections was found longer in the control group (78.6 +/- 10.7 microm) than in the EM (44.38 +/- 18.26 microm) and MP (44.05. +/- 18.25 microm) groups. We think that administration of EM, which is a well-known macrolid antibiotic, might be very effective in the treatment of aseptic inflammation of TMJ space. Because corticosteroid administration has many side effects, EM may be a preferable drug in the treatment of inflammation of TMJ.

Chronic osteomyelitis: 20 years after mandible fracture.

Chronic osteomyelitis is a persistent abscess of the bone that is characterized by the usual complex of inflammatory processes, including necrosis of mineralized and marrow tissues, suppuration, resorption, sclerosis, and hyperplasia. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of chronic osteomyelitis seen 20 years after mandible fracture.

Uncommon peripheral osteoma of the mandible: report of two cases.

The osteoma is a benign osteogenic neoplasm of bone. Peripheral osteoma of the mandible is uncommon. It is often asymptomatic and usually discovered when a patient complains of esthetic problems and presents for treatment. Peripheral osteomas have a characteristic clinical and radiographic appearance, but their pathogenesis is obscure. Described here are two patients with peripheral osteoma of the mandible, which might occur as a result of a combination of trauma and muscle traction.
