Holographic diffraction gratings using polymer-dispersed ferroelectric liquid crystals.

By controlling the morphology of holographic polymer-dispersed ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs), highly aligned FLC domains are obtained for diffractive optical applications. Rapid, thresholdless switching is observed for various grating pitch sizes between approximately 3 and approximately 12 microm. A simple phenomenological model is presented encompassing a distribution of domain sizes and an effective field that stabilizes the FLC domains to reflect the observed thresholdless switching and optical behavior.

Two-dimensional nematic colloidal crystals self-assembled by topological defects.

The ability to generate regular spatial arrangements of particles is an important technological and fundamental aspect of colloidal science. We showed that colloidal particles confined to a few-micrometer-thick layer of a nematic liquid crystal form two-dimensional crystal structures that are bound by topological defects. Two basic crystalline structures were observed, depending on the ordering of the liquid crystal around the particle. Colloids inducing quadrupolar order crystallize into weakly bound two-dimensional ordered structure, where the particle interaction is mediated by the sharing of localized topological defects. Colloids inducing dipolar order are strongly bound into antiferroelectric-like two-dimensional crystallites of dipolar colloidal chains. Self-assembly by topological defects could be applied to other systems with similar symmetry.

Soft-stiff regime crossover for an aerosil network dispersed in liquid crystals.

Hydrophilic and hydrophobic aerosil particles immersed in S-(+)-[4-(2-methylbutyl) phenyl 4-n-octylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate] or [p-(n-decyloxy) benzylidene-p-amino-(2-methylbutyl) cinnamate] compound have been studied by employing x-ray diffraction. The aerosil-induced relative layer compression Delta d has been measured in the smectic A phase as a function of aerosil concentration x. Delta d(x) is shown to sensitively monitor the intermediate-rigid transition of the adaptive aerosil network. The dominant mechanism leading to the Delta d(x) profiles is the global establishment of the aerosil-induced molecular tilt in the smectic A phase.

Simulation of phase separation of polymer-liquid-crystal mixtures and the effect of confining external surfaces.

A Monte Carlo simulation is performed on a lattice model of a binary mixture of nematogenic liquids and polymers to study the main aspects of phase separation including the influence of external surfaces. The system was investigated at various temperatures, concentrations, and degrees of polymerization. The results seem to fit well within Flory-Huggins theory predictions. It is also shown that in some cases the anisotropy plays an important role in structure formation. The influence of the external surfaces on the condensation of one of the phases was studied on systems that experience the separation by nucleation and growth. It has been noticed that the surfaces that prefer nematogenic molecules act as better condensation nuclei, especially if they are ordered.

Branching of colloidal chains in capillary-confined nematics.

We report on the observation of colloidal chain assembly and branching inside capillaries filled with a nematic liquid crystal. Because of the homeotropic anchoring of liquid crystalline molecules on the capillary and colloidal droplet surfaces, the assembly of droplets along the capillary axis is expected, producing a transformation of the nematic director field from an escape-radial to quasiradial configuration. However, the subsequent over time branching of the straight colloidal chains is counterintuitive. By numerical simulations, we demonstrate that chain branching can occur by overcoming an energy barrier and can at least dwell as a metastable configuration. Moreover, manipulation of colloidal chains by electric fields and their gradients demonstrates various regimes of chain behavior in electric fields.

Calorimetric study of phase transitions in a liquid-crystal-based microemulsion.

A lyotropic inverse micelle phase composed of water, thermotropic liquid-crystal octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB), and surfactant (DDAB) was studied by using high-resolution calorimetry on several mixtures with 3%, 8%, and 15% micelle concentration. Calorimetric results show strong depression of the isotropic to nematic (I-N) phase-transition temperature. Broad heat-capacity anomalies show the existence of a wide coexistence range of isotropic, nematic, and smectic-A phases, which mimics the behavior of a new nearly stable thermodynamic phase. An observation of the rather sharp almost bulklike nematic to smectic-A (N-A) transition at low-temperatures indicates that our heat capacity results are consistent with the phase separation scenario in which significant number of micelles is expelled during I-N conversion leaving almost pure nematic phase at lower temperatures. It was found that micelles get almost completely remixed on heating the mixture back to the isotropic phase.

Surface-induced orientational order in stretched nanoscale-sized polymer dispersed liquid-crystal droplets.

We investigate orientational ordering in stretched polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal (PDLC) droplets using deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance, in the nematic and isotropic phases. In the latter case, we estimate the surface order parameter S(0) and the thickness of the interfacial layer from the temperature-independent surface ordering model for an elliptical cavity with a varying aspect ratio. A simple phenomenological model well describes the quadrupole splitting frequency of NMR spectra in the isotropic phase. The strain dependence of S(0) suggests that stretching-induced changes in the orientation of polymer chains in the PDLC matrix noticeably affect liquid-crystal surface anchoring. Experimental results are supported by simulated NMR spectra obtained as output from Monte Carlo simulations of paranematic ordering in ellipsoidal droplets based on the Lebwohl-Lasher lattice model.

Influence of finite size and wetting on nematic and smectic phase behavior of liquid crystal confined to controlled-pore matrices.

The high-resolution calorimetric study was carried out on octylcyanobiphenyl liquid crystal (LC) confined to various controlled-pore glass (CPG) matrices with silane-treated surface. The diameter of the voids cross section ranged between 23.7 and 395 nm. The results are compared to those obtained previously on CPG voids nontreated with silane. We found a striking similarity between the shifts in the isotropic to nematic and nematic to smectic-A phase transition temperatures as a function of the void radius in which order parameter variations at the LC-void interface play the dominant role. Weaker temperature shifts are observed in silane-treated samples, where surface ordering tendency is larger. In nontreated samples, a finite-size scaling law in the maximum value of the heat capacity at the nematic to smectic-A transition was observed for void diameters larger than 20 nm. In silane-treated samples, this behavior is considerably changed by surface wetting interactions.

Calorimetric study of octylcyanobiphenyl liquid crystal confined to a controlled-pore glass.

We present a calorimetric study of the phase behavior of octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) liquid crystal confined to a controlled-pore glass (CPG). We used CPG matrices with characteristic void diameters ranging from 400 to 20 nm. In bulk we obtain weakly first-order isotropic to nematic (I-N) phase transition and nearly continuous character of the nematic to smectic-A (N-SmA) phase transition. In all CPG matrices the I-N transition remains weakly first order, while the N-SmA one becomes progressively suppressed with decreasing CPG pore radius. With decreased pore diameters both phase transition temperatures monotonously decrease following similar trends, but increasing the stability range of the N phase. The heat-capacity response at the weakly first order I-N and continuous N-SmA phase transitions gradually approaches the tricritical-like and three-dimensional XY behavior, respectively. The main observed features were explained using a bicomponent single pore type phenomenological model.

Annihilation of nematic point defects: postcollision scenarios.

We perform a study of the annihilation of a nematic radial and hyperbolic point defects with the main focus on the confinement induced collision and postcollision scenarios. Brownian molecular dynamics on a semimicroscopic lattice is used. Initially a pair of defects, separated for 1.4-1.7 radii, is induced at the axis of the cylindrical capillary. In such a configuration defects start to approach slowly. In the early stage, their cores are negligibly influenced by the mutual interaction. When the distance becomes comparable to the nematic correlation length, the cores significantly deform. In the collision regime, defects gradually merge. We observe two qualitatively different scenarios in the postcollision regime, depending on the degree of (meta) stability of the initially imposed escaped structure with point defects.

Deuteron NMR study of molecular ordering in a holographic-polymer-dispersed liquid crystal.

Using deuteron nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and dynamic light scattering, we study the orientational order and dynamics of a BL038-5CB liquid-crystal mixture in a holographic polymer dispersed liquid-crystal material (HPDLC) as used for switchable diffractive optical elements. At high temperatures, where the liquid crystal is predominantly in the isotropic phase, the HPDLC deuteron NMR linewidth and transverse spin-relaxation rate T-12 are two orders of magnitude larger than in the bulk. The analysis shows that the surface-induced order parameter in HPDLC is significantly larger than in similar confining systems and that translational diffusion of molecules in the surface layer is at least two orders of magnitude slower than in the rest of the cavity. The unusual temperature dependence of T-12 upon cooling suggests the possibility of a partial separation of the 5CB component in the liquid-crystal mixture. The onset of the nematic phase in HPDLC occurs at considerably lower temperature than in the bulk and takes place gradually due to different sizes and different content of non-liquid-crystalline ingredients in droplets. Parts of the droplets are found isotropic even at room temperature and the structure of the nematic director field in the droplets is only slightly anisotropic. We point out the capability of NMR to detect the actual state of liquid-crystalline order in HPDLCs and to contribute in this way to the improvement of the switching efficiency of diffraction gratings.

Behavior of mesogenic molecules deposited at the alumina-air interface: a deuteron NMR study.

Thin molecular depositions of 4(')-pentyl-4-cyonobiphenyl (5CB) mesogenic molecules are investigated via quadrupole-perturbed deuteron nuclear magnetic resonance (DNMR) spectroscopy. Uniform and controlled thickness molecular surface depositions are prepared on the inner cylindrical surfaces of Anopore membranes by the solvent-evaporation technique. As a result, 5CB molecules are found in two different configurations: a bulklike one with parallel axial arrangement, and a surface one with planar radial arrangement. If the 5CB surface coverage exceeds c approximately 0.35, only the bulk state is present. In the coverage range between 0.015 and 0.35, the bulklike state and the surface layer coexist, conforming to a typical dewetting scenario. Below c approximately 0.015, only the surface layer is present. The dilution of the surface deposition with decreasing coverage is manifested as an increase in the DNMR doublet frequency splitting. The surface orientational order parameter Q, the surface biaxiality eta, and the diffusion coefficient D(S) are determined from the DNMR spectral patterns obtained at different sample orientations in the external magnetic field. These angular patterns prove that in highly diluted surface depositions the molecules lie flat on the surface. However, they are not frozen and their molecular axes rapidly reorient on the DNMR measurement time scale, typically 10(-4) s, while remaining confined to the surface. Simultaneously, molecules diffuse over the surface with a surface diffusion constant on the order of 10(-11) m(2) s(-1). Such molecular diffusion is responsible for an effective biaxiality on the DNMR time scale. However, an inherent biaxiality cannot be completely ruled out and thus may play a minor role. The surface phase has a two-dimensional (2D) gas character with some (possible) indicators of 2D-liquid properties.

Defect structures and torque on an elongated colloidal particle immersed in a liquid crystal host.

Combining molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation, we study defect structures around an elongated colloidal particle embedded in a nematic liquid crystal host. By studying nematic ordering near the particle and the disclination core region, we are able to examine the defect core structure and the difference between two simulation techniques. In addition, we also study the torque on a particle tilted with respect to the director, and modification of this torque when the particle is close to the cell wall.
