Hydrogencyanamide-bridged one-dimensional polymers built on Mn(III)-Schiff base fragments: synthesis, structure, and magnetism.

The ability of NCNH(-) to construct transition metal coordination polymers and to transmit magnetic coupling was investigated. By introduction of various tetradentate Schiff base ligands (L) and different solvents (S), nine NCNH(-)-bridged manganese(III) coordination complexes were obtained. Their structures can be divided into three types: I) NCNH-bridged chains built on mononuclear [Mn(III)(L)] units, [Mn(III)(L)(mu(1,3)-NCNH)](n) (L=5-Brsalen (1), 5-Clsalen (2)); II) NCNH-bridged chains built on dinuclear [Mn(III) (2)(L)(2)] units, complexes 3-8, [Mn(III) (2)(L)(2)(mu(1,3)-NCNH)]ClO(4)S (L=salen, 5-Fsalen, 5-Clsalen, 5-OCH(3)salen; S=CH(3)OH or C(2)H(5)OH); III) NCNH-bridged Mn(III) dimers linked by hydrogen bonds into a 1D polymer, {[Mn(III)(3-OCH(3)salen)(H(2)O)](2)(mu(1,3)-NCNH)}ClO(4) x 0.5 H(2)O (9, salen=N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane). In these complexes, the N[triple chemical bond]C--NH(-) resonance structure dominates the bonding mode of the NCNH(-) ligand adopting the mu(1,3)-bridging mode. Magnetic characterization shows that the asymmetric NCNH(-) bridge transmits antiferromagnetic interaction between Mn(III) ions and often favors the weak ferromagnetism caused by spin canting in these one-dimensional chains. However, these complexes exhibit different magnetic behaviors at low temperatures.

Synthesis, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of cyano-bridged heterobimetallic chains based on [(Tp)Fe(CN)3]-.

With the use of the tailored cyanometalate precursor, (Bu4N)[(Tp)Fe(CN)3] (Tp = Tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate) as the building block to react with fully solvated Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) cations, four one-dimensional (1D) heterobimetallic cyano-bridged chain complexes of squares, [(Tp)2Fe(III)2(CN)6Cu(CH3OH).2CH3OH]n (1), [(Tp)2Fe(III)2(CN)6Cu(DMF).DMF]n (2), [(Tp)2Fe(III)2(CN)6M(CH3OH)2.2CH3OH]n (M = Co (3) and Ni (4)), have been prepared. In complexes 1 and 2, the Cu(II) ions are pentacoordinated in the form of a slightly distorted square-based pyramid, and they are linked by distorted octahedrons of [(Tp)Fe(CN)3]- to form 1D chains of squares. In complexes 3 and 4, both the central Co(II) and Ni(II) ions have a slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry, and they are bridged by [(Tp)Fe(CN)3]- to form similar 1D chains of squares. There are weak interchain pi-pi stacking interactions through the pyrazolyl groups of the Tp ligands for complexes 3 and 4. The crystal structures and magnetic studies demonstrate that complexes 1 and 2 exhibit intrachain ferromagnetic coupling and single-chain magnets behavior, and the blocking temperature is ca. 6 K for complex 1 and ca. 3 K for complex 2. Complexes 3 and 4 show significant metamagnetic behavior, where the cyanides mediate the intrachain ferromagnetic coupling between Fe(III) and Co(II) or Ni(II) ions and the interchain pi-pi stacking interactions lead to antiferromagnetic couplings. The field dependence of the magnetization measurements shows that the critical field is around 1 kOe for complex 3 and 0.8 kOe for complex 4 at 1.8 K.

Monodisperse lanthanide oxysulfide nanocrystals.

Monodisperse lanthanide oxysulfide nanoplates and short nanorods were synthesized by the thermal decomposition of molecular precursors in the presence of oxygen. The nanoplates have uniform thicknesses and further self-organize to nanowires up to micron scale. The Eu2O2S and Eu3+-doped Gd2O2S nanocrystals both show unusual fluorescence properties obviously differing from the bulk powder phosphors, which are related to the surface-modification effects.

Chiral magnetic metal-organic frameworks of dimetal subunits: magnetism tuning by mixed-metal compositions of the solid solutions.

The isostructural, chiral molecular magnetic materials with the formula [MxM'(2-x)(ca)2(1,4-dimb)]n [H2ca = D-(+)-camphoric acid, 1,4-dimb = 1,4-di-(1-imidazolyl-methyl)-benzene, M = Ni(II), M' = CoII, 0 < or = x < or = 2] consist of ca-bridged (4,4) layers with [M2(O2CR)4] as secondary building units that are pillared by the 1,4-dimb ligands into a unique 3D framework. The high-spin octahedral symmetry and the proportions of the mixed-metal ions were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy. The compounds exhibit the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering at 7.5 approximately 23 K, as well as weak ferromagnetism, spin-flop, and glassy behavior that result from the randomness of the mixed-metal pairs, magnetic anisotropy of the metallic cations, and antisymmetric exchange. The composites should be regarded as molecular alloys of the pure Ni(II) and Co(II) compounds. The magnetic behavior of the solid solutions shows unambiguously that the organic bridges, bond angles, and bond distances greatly influence the effective interactions and bring about cooperative magnetic behavior in the chiral 3D frameworks.

Synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic property and oxidative DNA cleavage activity of an octanuclear copper(II) complex showing water-perchlorate helical network.

A new octanuclear copper(II) complex has been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography: [Cu(8)(HL)(4)(OH)(4)(H(2)O)(2)(ClO(4))(2)].(ClO(4))(2).2H(2)O (1) (H(3)L=2,6-bis(hydroxyethyliminoethyl)-4-methyl phenol). The complex is formed by the linkage of two terminal bimetallic cationic units and a tetranuclear mu(3)-hydroxo bridged dicubane core by a very short intramolecular hydrogen bond (O-H...O, 1.48(3)A and the angle 175 degrees). The coordination sphere of the terminal copper atoms is square pyramidal, the apical positions being occupied by water and a perchlorate ion. Complex 1 self-assembles to form a new type of water-perchlorate helical network [(H(2)O)(2)(ClO(4))](infinity) involving oxygen atoms of coordinated perchlorate ion and the two lattice water molecules through hydrogen-bonding interaction. The variable temperature-dependent susceptibility measurement (2-300K) of 1 reveals a strong antiferromagnetic coupling, J(1)=-220cm(-1) and J(2)=-98cm(-1) (J(1) and J(2) representing the exchange constant within [Cu(2+)](4) and [Cu(2+)](2) units, respectively). The complex binds to double-stranded supercoiled plasmid DNA giving a K(app) value of 1.2x10(7)M(-1) and displays efficient oxidative cleavage of supercoiled DNA in the presence of H(2)O(2) following a hydroxyl radical pathway.

Coordination polymers with end-on azido and pyridine carboxylate N-oxide bridges displaying long-range magnetic ordering with low dimensional character.

A series of 2D and one 3D transition-metal-azido coordination polymers with pyridine carboxylate N-oxide, isonicotinate N-oxide (INO), and nicotinate N-oxide (NNO) as the coligands were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and structurally and magnetically characterized. These complexes have the formulas [M(L)(N3)(H2O)]n (L = INO and M = Mn, 1.Mn; Co, 2.Co; Ni, 3.Ni and L = NNO and M = Mn, 4.Mn; Co, 5.Co; Ni, 6.Ni) and [Cu(L)(N3)(H2O)(0.5)]n (L = INO, 7.Cu; NNO, 8.Cu). All complexes consist of end-on azido and syn-syn carboxylato mixed-bridged M-N(3)/COO chains that are further linked by the pyridine N-oxide group of the INO or NNO to give rise to 2D layered structures for 1.Mn, 2.Co, 3.Ni, 4.Mn, 5.Co, 6.Ni, and 8.Cu and a 3D framework for 7.Cu. The high-temperature magnetic susceptibilities are dominated by low-dimensional behavior while long-range ordering sets in at low temperatures. The Mn complexes are antiferromagnets, and the others are metamagnets. In addition, 5.Co exhibits slow magnetic relaxation behavior at low temperatures. The metamagnetism in each case is due to strong intrachain ferromagnetic interactions and weak interchain antiferromagnetic ones.

2D LnIII RuIII 2 compounds constructed from trans-[Ru(acac)2(CN)2]-. Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties.

A series of cyano-bridged Ln(III)Ru(III)2 coordination polymers, Ph4P{Ln(NO3)2[Ru(acac)2(CN)2]2} [Ln = Tb (1), Dy (2), Er (3), Gd (4); Hacac = acetylacetone] have been synthesized by the reaction of Ln(NO3)3 with trans-Ph4P[Ru(acac)2(CN)2] in methanol. X-ray crystallographic determination reveals that these compounds are isostructural and have a wavy (4,4) layer structure with the Ln3+ ions bridged by trans-[Ru(acac)2(CN)2]-. Magnetic studies shows that the magnetic coupling between the Ln(III) and Ru(III) ions through the cyano bridges in 1-4 is negligibly weak.

Heterometallic Cr-Mn complexes containing cyanide and oxalate bridges.

Three heterometallic Cr-Mn compounds, {Mn(mu-ox)0.5(H2O) [Cr(phen)(CN)4]}n.n H2O.2n CH3OH, (1), {Mn(mu-ox)0.5(H2O)[Cr(bpy)(CN)4]}n.2n H2O x n CH3OH, (2), and {Mn(mu-ox)0.5(bpy)[Cr(bpy)(CN)4]}n, (3) (ox = oxalate), containing cyanide and oxalate bridges based on building blocks [Cr(L)(CN)4]- (L = phen and 2,2'-bipyridine) have been prepared. A new approach was first employed to synthesize ox-bridged compounds via facile oxidation-hydrolysis reactions of diaminomaleonitrile. X-ray crystallography revealed that the structures of 1 and 2 are similar, where cyano-bridged corrugated ladderlike chains are further connected through bis-bidentate oxalato bridges to unique two-dimensional layered structures. Of note is that the introduction of 2,2'-bipyridine led to an interesting cluster-based chainlike compound (3) with cyano-bridged squares [Mn2Cr2] extended by ox bridges. Magnetic studies show antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction between cyano-bridged Cr(III)-Mn(II) and ox-bridged Mn(II)-Mn(II) ions, with the result that 1 and 2 exhibit AF ordering with spin-flop behaviors below 18 and 19 K, respectively.

Synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties of a series of cyano-bridged Fe-Mn bimetallic complexes.

The preparation and crystal structures of five cyano-bridged Fe-Mn complexes, [(bipy)2Fe(II)(CN)2Mn(II)(bipy)2]2(ClO4)4 (1), [(bipy)2Fe(II)(CN)2Mn(II)(DMF)3(H2O)]2(ClO4)4 (2), {[(Tp)Fe(III)(CN)3]2Mn(II)(DMF)2(H2O)}2 (3), {[(Tp)Fe(III)(CN)3]2Mn(II)(DMF)2}n (4), and Na2[Mn(II)Fe(II)(CN)6] (5) (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, Tp = tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate), are reported here. Compounds 1-4 contain the basic Fe2(CN)4Mn2 square building units, of which 1-3 show the motif of discrete molecular squares of Fe2(CN)4Mn2 and 4 possesses a 1D double-zigzag chain-like structure, while compound 5 is a 3D cubic framework analogous to that of Prussian blue. Compounds 1 and 2 show weak ferromagnetic interactions between two Mn(II) ions through the bent -NC-Fe(II)-CN- bridges. Compound 3 shows weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the Fe(III) and Mn(II) ions, while compound 4 displays a metamagnetic-like behavior with TN = 5.2 K and Hc = 10.5 kOe. Compound 5 exhibits a ferromagnetic ordering with Tc= 3.5 K, coercive field, Hc, = 330 G, and a remnant magnetization of 503 cm3 Oe mol(-1).

Template- and pH-directed assembly of diruthenium diphosphonates with different topologies and oxidation states.

In the presence of organic templates, six diruthenium diphosphonates, namely, [H3N(CH2)3NH3]2[Ru2(hedp)2] (1), [H3N(CH2)4NH3]2[Ru2(hedp)2].4H2O (2), [H3N(CH2)5NH3]2[Ru2(hedp)2].4H2O (3), [H3N(CH2)3NH3][Ru2(hedp)(hedpH)].H2O (4), [H3N(CH2)4NH3][Ru2(hedpH(0.5))2].2H2O (5), and [H3N(CH2)5NH3]2[Ru2(hedp)2][Ru2(hedpH)2]] (6) [hedp = 1-hydroxyethylidenediphosphonate, CH3C(OH)(PO3)2] have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Compounds 1-3 contain homovalent paddlewheel cores of Ru2(II,II)(hedp)2(4-) that are connected through edge-sharing of the [RuO5Ru] octahedra, resulting in infinite linear chains. Compounds 4-6 contain mixed-valent diruthenium(II,III) phosphonate paddlewheel cores of Ru2(II,III)(hedpH(n))2(3-2n)- that are connected by phosphonate oxygen atoms, forming distorted square-grid layers in 4 and 6 or a kagomé lattice in 5. Both the templates and the pH values are found to play important roles in directing the final products with particular topologies and oxidation states of the diruthenium unit. The magnetic studies show that weak antiferromagentic interactions are propagated between the homovalent diruthenium units in compounds 1-3. For compounds 4-6, weak ferromagnetic interactions are observed.

Syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic characterization of five new dimeric manganese(III) tetradentate Schiff base complexes exhibiting single-molecule-magnet behavior.

Tetradentate Schiff base ligands H2L (H2saltmen, H2salen, H2-5-Brsalen, and H2-3,5-Brsalen), derived from the condensation of the corresponding salicylaldehyde or its derivatives with 1,1,2,2-tetramethylethyldiamine or 1, 2-diaminoethane, reacted with Mn(III) acetate or perchlorate salts and sodium azide or sodium cyanate to produce five Mn(III) dimer complexes, [Mn(saltmen)(O2CCH3)]2.2CH3CO2H (1), [Mn(saltmen)(N3)]2 (2), [Mn(salen)(NCO)]2 (3), [Mn(3,5-Brsalen)(3,5-Brsalicylaldehyde)]2 (4), and [Mn(5-Brsalen)(CH3OH)]2(ClO4)2 (5). These new complexes have been characterized by IR, elemental analyses, crystal structural analyses, and magnetic studies. Within these Mn(III) dimeric complexes, two Mn(III) ions are connected by phenolate oxygen atoms with acetate, azide, cyanate, a 3,5-Brsalicyladehyde anion, and a neutral methanol molecule as the axial ligands for complexes 1-5, respectively. Complexes 1-4 exhibit intradimer ferromagnetic exchange and display frequency dependence of ac magnetic susceptibility, possibly showing single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior. In contrast, complex 5 shows an intradimer antiferromagnetic coupling probably originating from the relatively shorter Mn-O distance, compared to those of complexes 1-4.

PCR detection of virulence factor genes in Escherichia coli isolates from weaned piglets with edema disease and/or diarrhea in China.

Fimbriae, toxins and pathogenicity islands (PAIs) are main virulence factors of the pathogenic Escherichia coli strains. To investigate into their prevalence in clinical E. coli isolates associated with porcine postweaning diarrhea (PWD) and/or pig edema disease (ED), 240 isolates were obtained from diseased piglets (140 from PWD, 76 from ED and 24 from ED/PWD) and submitted to PCR detection for genes coding for fimbriae, enterotoxins, shiga toxins, intimin and high-molecular-weight protein 2 (HMWP2). Among the 240 isolates detected, detection rates of the genes for F18, F4, intimin, HMWP2, Stx2e, LTa, STa and STb were 26.25%, 3.75%, 28.33%, 16.67%, 35%, 10.83%, 14.58% and 9.17%, respectively, and 67.92% of the isolates could be assigned into 20 different virulence factor patterns. Further more, F18ab+ STEC are the prevalent pathogens of ED, and F18+ and/or intimin+ STEC/ETEC are the dominant pathogens of ED/PWD, while F18ab+, F4+ and/or intimin+ ETEC and HPI+ and/or LEE+ E. coli are more frequently associated with PWD.

Two three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks containing one-dimensional hydroxyl/carboxylate mixed bridged metal chains: syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties.

Two novel three-dimensional complexes formulated as [M(3)(bime)2(mu3-OH)2(HO-BDC)2]n (M = Co, 1; Cu, 2) [bime = 1,2-bis(imidazol-1'-yl)ethane, HO-H2BDC = 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid] have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. Both 1 and 2 exhibit similar structural frameworks resulting from one-dimensional metal/oxygen chains extended by HO-BDC, but the bridging modes of HO-BDC and coordination environments of metal centers are different. Complexes 1 and 2 crystallize in the orthorhombic system, space group Pbcn, a = 18.458(2) [18.2119(12) for 2] Angstroms, b = 12.0616(14) [11.6847(7)] Angstroms, c = 11.4859(14) [12.0688(6)] Angstroms, and Z = 4 (4). Magnetic studies show that 1 displays a slow magnetic relaxation, a large hysteresis, and distinct finite-size effects and 2 contains an antiferromagnetic chain.
