The influence of electric field on the global and local reactivity descriptors: reactivity and stability of weakly bonded complexes.

The response of the global and local reactivity density-based descriptors (chemical potential, hardness, softness, Fukui function, and local softness) in the presence of external electric field has been studied for some of the simple prototype molecular systems. In addition to the analysis on the reactivity of these systems, the influence of the electric field on the interaction energy of the complexes formed by these systems has also been studied using the recently proposed semiquantitative model based on the local hard-soft acid-base principle. By using the inverse relationship between the global hardness and softness parameters, a simple relationship is obtained for the variation of hardness in terms of the Fukui function under the external electric field. It is shown that the increase in the hardness values for a particular system in the presence of external field does not necessarily imply that the reactivity of the system would be deactivated or vice versa.

Interaction induced shifts in O-H stretching frequency of water in halide-ion water clusters: a microscopic approach with a bond descriptor.

Based on conceptual density functional theory, two new descriptors, the normalized atom-condensed Fukui functions (NFFs) and bond deformation kernel (BDK), are proposed to describe the O-H stretching frequency shifts in water halide-ion clusters by including local polarizations in the system. NFF, along with BDK, can be successfully used to describe interactions between different atoms, especially in cases where polarizations are quite important.

Theoretical study of N2O reduction by CO in Fe-BEA Zeolite.

Quantum mechanical (QM) and QM/molecular mechanics (MM) studies of the full catalytic cycle of N(2)O reduction by CO in Fe-BEA zeolite, that is, oxidation of BEA-Fe by N(2)O and reduction of BEA-Fe-alphaO by CO, is presented. A large QM cluster, representing half of the channel of the BEA zeolite, is used. The contribution of the MM embedding to the calculated activation energies is found to be negligible. The minimum-energy paths for N(2)O decomposition and reduction with CO are calculated using the nudged elastic band (NEB) method. Calculated and experimental activation energies are in good agreement. The two possible orientations for the gaseous molecules adsorbing on the Fe site that are found lead to different activation energies.

Intercluster reactivity of metalloaromatic and antiaromatic compounds and their applications in molecular electronics: a theoretical investigation.

Local reactivity descriptors, such as the condensed local softness and Fukui function, have been employed to investigate the intercluster reactivity of the metalloaromatic (Al4Li- and Al4Na-) and antiaromatic (Al4Li4 and Al4Na4) compounds. We have used the concept of group softness and group Fukui function to characterize the strength of the nucleophilicity (ability to donate electrons) of the Al4 unit in these compounds. The aim of this work is to understand the enhanced efficiency of the electron injection of the Al-Li cathode in the organic light emitting diode due to the formation of Al-Li clusters at the interface. Our analysis shows that the Al4 unit of the Al4Li- cluster has the highest nucleophilicity compared to the other clusters. Hence, we believe that the formation of the Al4Li- type of metalloaromatic clusters would be responsible for the increase in the efficiency of the electron injection of the Al-Li cathode.

Structural, electronic, and bonding properties of zeolite Sn-beta: a periodic density functional theory study.

The structural, electronic, and the bonding properties of the zeolite Sn-beta (Sn-BEA) have been investigated by using the periodic density functional theory. Each of the nine different T-sites in BEA were substituted by Sn atoms and all the nine geometries were completely optimized by using the plane-wave basis set in conjunction with the ultra-soft pseudopotential. On the basis of the structural and the electronic properties, it has been demonstrated that the substitution of Sn atoms in the BEA framework is an endothermic process and hence the incorporation of Sn in the BEA is limited. The lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) energies have been used to characterize the Lewis acidity of each T-site. On the basis of the relative cohesive energy and the LUMO energy, the T2 site is shown to be the most favorable site for the substitution Sn atoms in the BEA framework.

Correlated complex independent particle potential for calculating electronic resonances.

We have formulated and applied an analytic continuation method for the recently formulated correlated independent particle potential [A. Beste and R. J. Bartlett J. Chem. Phys. 120, 8395 (2004)] derived from Fock space multireference coupled cluster theory. The technique developed is an advanced ab initio tool for calculating the properties of resonances in the low-energy electron-molecule collision problem. The proposed method quantitatively describes elastic electron-molecule scattering below the first electronically inelastic threshold. A complex absorbing potential is utilized to define the analytic continuation for the potential. A separate treatment of electron correlation and relaxation effects for the projectile-target system and the analytic continuation using the complex absorbing potential is possible, when an approximated form of the correlated complex independent particle potential is used. The method, which is referred to as complex absorbing potential-based correlated independent particle (CAP-CIP), is tested by application to the well-known (2)Pi(g) shape resonance of e-N(2) and the (2)B(2g) shape resonance of e-C(2)H(4) (ethylene) with highly satisfactory results.

Optimization of nonlinear optical properties by substituent position, geometry and symmetry of the molecule: An ab initio study.

Static polarizability and first- and second-order hyperpolarizability tensors are computed at the correlated level for a series of para-nitroaniline derivatives. The importance of including electron correlation effects in the determination of equilibrium structure and the molecular properties is investigated. A qualitative description of the substitution effects, planarity, and symmetric effect of the molecule on the molecular susceptibility is discussed.

Analytically continued Fock space multireference coupled-cluster theory: application to the 2Pi(g) shape resonance in e-N2 scattering.

The technique of Fock space multireference coupled-cluster (FSMRCC) is applied for the first time to the correlated calculation of the energy and width of a shape resonance in an electron-molecule collision. The procedure is based upon combining a complex absorbing potential with FSMRCC theory. Accurate resonance parameters are obtained by solving a small non-Hermitian eigenvalue problem. The potential-energy curve of the (2)Pi(g) state of N2- is calculated using the FSMRCC and multireference configuration-interaction (MRCI) level of theories. Comparison with the single-determinant Hartree-Fock theory indicates that correlation effects are important in determining the behavior of the resonance state.

A constrained variational approach for energy derivatives in Fock-space multireference coupled-cluster theory.

In this paper, we present a formulation based on constrained variational approach to enable efficient computation of energy derivatives using Fock-space multireference coupled-cluster theory. Adopting conventional normal ordered exponential with Bloch projection approach, we present a method of deriving equations when general incomplete model spaces are used. Essential simplifications arise when effective Hamiltonian definition becomes explicit as in the case of complete model spaces or some special quasicomplete model spaces. We apply the method to derive explicit generic expressions upto third-order energy derivatives for [0,1], [1,0], and [1,1] Fock-space sectors. Specific diagrammatic expressions for zeroth-order Lagrange multiplier equations for [0,1], [1,0], and [1,1] sectors are presented.

Fock space multireference coupled cluster calculations based on an underlying bivariational self-consistent field on Auger and shape resonances.

The Fock space multireference coupled cluster based on an underlying bivariational self-consistent field is applied to the problem of computing complex energy associated with Auger and shape resonances in e-atom scattering. It is concluded that the Fock space multireference coupled cluster based on a bivariational self-consistent field provides a useful and practical approach to calculation of resonance parameters. Numerical results are presented for the 2P shape resonance of Mg and Auger 1 s(-1) hole of Be.

Microwave specific Wolff rearrangement of alpha-diazoketones and its relevance to the nonthermal and thermal effect.

alpha-Diazoketones possess high electric dipole moments, as a consequence of the dipolar nature of the diazocarbonyl functional group. The vectorial analysis, theoretical calculations (PM3 and ab initio), and literature reports based on experimental and theoretical calculations reveal a higher dipole moment for the Z-configuration of the diazo functional group. Microwave irradiation of alpha-diazoketone (1a-m) (Figure 1) promotes Wolff rearrangement specifically via the Z-configuration in excellent yields. The dielectric properties of the solvent govern the course of the microwave rearrangement. 3-Diazocamphor (1m) on microwave irradiation in benzylamine exhibits nonthermal effects to furnish exclusively the Wolff rearrangement product (4m), equivalent to its photochemical behavior. In the presence of an aqueous medium, through solvent heating predominates, leading to the formation of a tricyclic ketone (5) as the principal product, arising from an intramolecular C-H insertion. This behavior is similar to its known thermal and transition metal catalyzed reactivity pattern.
