Inorganic-organic hybrid structures: open-framework iron phosphite-oxalates of varying dimensionality.

Inorganic-organic hybrid structures belonging to the family of iron phosphite-oxalates have been prepared by employing hydrothermal methods. Their structures, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, show a hierarchy within the family. While compounds I and II are low dimensional, III-VI have three-dimensional structures. Compound I has edge-shared ladders of iron phosphite with oxalate units hanging from the iron centers. Compound II has a layer structure with a honeycomb-like arrangement. The three-dimensional hybrid structures have the oxalate units connected in both in-plane and out-of-plane modes. A newly identified secondary building unit (SBU-7) and the oxalate units satisfying the valence and coordination requirements in the structure of V are novel and noteworthy structural features. Magnetic studies show that the dominant interactions between the iron centers are antiferromagnetic. Similar to other known hybrid structures, the phosphite-oxalate structures appear to show wide compositional and structural diversity.

Novel photocatalysts for the decomposition of organic dyes based on metal-organic framework compounds.

Three novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Co(2)(C(10)H(8)N(2))][C(12)H(8)O(COO)(2)](2), 1, [Ni(2)(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)][C(12)H(8)O(COO)(2)](2).H(2)O, 2, and [Zn(2)(C(10)H(8)N(2))][C(12)H(8)O(COO)(2)](2), 3, with three-dimensional structures have been synthesized and characterized. The structures of the three compounds appear somewhat related, formed by the connectivity involving the metal polyhedra (Co(4)N trigonal bipyramids in 1, NiO(4)N(2) octahedra in 2, and ZnO(4) tetrahedra and ZnO(3)N(2) trigonal bipyramids in 3), 4,4'-oxybis(benzoate), and 4,4'-bipyridine. The photocatalytic studies on 1-3 indicate that they are active catalysts for the degradation of orange G, rhodamine B, Remazol Brilliant Blue R and methylene blue. The compounds have also been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR, thermogravitmetric analysis, UV-vis, photoluminescence, and magnetic studies.

Chain structures in alkali metal borophosphates: synthesis and characterization of K3[BP3O9(OH)3] and Rb3[B2P3O11(OH)2].

Two new alkali metal borophosphates, K3[BP3O9(OH)3] and Rb3[B2P3O11(OH)2], were synthesized by applying solvothermal techniques using ethanol as solvent. The crystal structures were solved by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (K3[BP3O9(OH)3], monoclinic, C2/c (No. 15), a = 2454.6(8) pm, b = 736.3(2) pm, c = 1406.2(4) pm, beta = 118.35(2) degrees , Z = 8; Rb3[B2P3O11(OH)2], monoclinic, P2(1)/c (No. 14), a = 781.6(2) pm, b = 667.3(2) pm, c = 2424.8(5) pm, beta = 92.88(1) degrees , Z = 4). Both crystal structures comprise borophosphate chain anions. While for the rubidium compound a loop-branched chain motif is found as common for most of the chain anions in alkali metal borophosphates, the crystal structure of the potassium phase comprises the first open-branched chain with the highest phosphate content found so far in this group of compounds. Both chain anions are closely related to known anhydrous or hydrated phases, and the structural relations are discussed in terms of how the presence of OH groups and hydrogen bonds as well as number, charge, and size of charge balancing cations influence the 3D structural arrangement. The anionic entities are classified in terms of general principles of structural systematics for borophosphates.

Synthesis, structure and luminescent properties of yttrium benzene dicarboxylates with one- and three-dimensional structure.

The synthesis and structure of two yttrium benzene dicarboxylates, 1 is proportional to [[Y2(C12N2H8)2(C8H4O4)3].H2O], I and 3 is proportional to [[Y2(C12N2H8)2(C8H4O4)3]], II with one- and three-dimensional structure has been accomplished employing hydrothermal methods in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline. While I is formed with phthalic aid (1,2-BDC), II is formed using isophthalic acid (1,3-BDC). Both the structures appear to have comparable building units, an eight-membered ring and a paddle-wheel arrangement, connected through the carboxylic acid. The 1,10-phenanthroline, connected to Y as a secondary ligand, occupies the inter-chain spaces in I, and projects into the channels in II. The channels in II are inter-connected. Photoluminescence studies indicate that both I and II exhibit a bathochromic shift with respect to the acids (1,2-BDC and 1,3-BDC) and a hypsochromic shift with respect to 1,10-phenanthroline. Both the compounds exhibit reasonable pi...pi interactions.

Metal carboxylates with open architectures.

The field of inorganic open-framework materials is dominated by aluminosilicates and phosphates. The metal carboxylates have emerged as an important family in the last few years. This family includes not only mono- and dicarboxylates of transition, rare-earth, and main-group metals, but also a variety of hybrid structures. Some of the carboxylates possess novel adsorption and magnetic properties. Dicarboxylates and related species provide an effective means of designing novel hybrid structures with porous and other properties. In some of these structures, the dicarboxylate acts as a linker between two inorganic units. Hybrid nanocomposites are also of particular note, for example, cadmium oxalate host lattices that can accommodate extended alkali-metal halide structures. This Review discusses the synthesis, structure, and properties of various types of open-framework metal carboxylates.

Synthesis and structures of new pyromellitate coordination polymers with piperazine as a ligand.

Two new coordination polymers of the pyromellitic acid, [Zn(2)(H(2)O)(C(10)H(2)O(8))(C(4)N(2)H(8))]( infinity ), I, and [Cd(4)(H(2)O)(2)(C(10)H(2)O(8))(2)(C(4)N(2)H(8))(3)]( infinity ), II, have been prepared employing hydrothermal methods in the presence of piperazine. The structures have three-dimensional connectivity involving both the carboxylate and the amine molecule. The amine molecule acts as a ligand connecting two different metal centers giving rise to a simple dimer in I, and a two-dimensional layer structure in II. There are two types of pyromellitates in I and only one type in II. Of the two types of acids in I, acid-1 has all the oxygen atoms connected to Zn with monodendate connectivity and acid-2 has only four monodendate connectivity and possesses four terminal C-O linkage. In II, two of the carboxylates have bidendate connectivity and the other two have monodendate connectivity and possess one terminal C-O bond. The projection of the bound amine molecules, in II, into the large elliptical channels is noteworthy. These amine molecules may be amenable for chemical manipulations. Both the coordination polymers exhibit photoluminescence at room temperature, the main emission being at 380 and 410 nm, respectively, for I and II, which is due to the ligand-to-metal charger transfer (LMCT).

Synthesis of a single four-ring (S4R) molecular zinc phosphate and its assembly to an extended polymeric structure: a single-crystal and in-situ MAS NMR investigation.

A reaction of ZnO, HCl, H(3)PO(4), and 2-pyridylpiperazine in THF/H(2)O mixture at 75 degrees C for 72 h produces a new zinc phosphate, [(C(5)NH(5))(C(4)N(2)H(10))][Zn(H(2)PO(4))(2)(HPO(4))], I. Zinc phosphate I consists of single four-ring (S4R) units with terminal phosphoryl groups hanging from the Zn center. On reaction with zinc acetate dihydrate in the presence of water at 100 degrees C, I gave another new zinc phosphate, [(C(5)NH(5))(C(4)N(2)H(10))][Zn(2)(H(2)PO(4))(HPO(4))(PO(4))] x 2H(2)O, II. II has a layer structure with apertures formed by 4- and 8-T atoms (T = Zn, P). An examination of the two structures reveals that I and II are related, II being formed by the direct addition of Zn(2+) ions to I. Room-temperature (31)P MAS NMR studies show the presence of different phosphorus species in both compounds. An in-situ (31)P MAS NMR investigation on the formation of II from I in the presence of Zn(2+) ions and water reveals the transformation to be facile. What is noteworthy in this study is that the structural integrity of the S4Rs has been maintained during the formation of II. Donor-acceptor hydrogen bond interactions and pi-pi interactions involving the pyridyl groups also appear to play subtle roles in both phosphates. This study, the first attempt of its kind, combines the principles of supramolecular organic chemistry with inorganic building units and contributes to our understanding of the formation of framework solids.

Hydro/solvothermal synthesis and structures of new zinc phosphates of varying dimensionality.

Hydro/solvothermal reactions of ZnO, HCl, H(3)PO(4), 1,4-diazacycleheptane (homopiperazine), and H(2)O under a variety of conditions yielded three new organic-inorganic hybrid materials, [C(5)N(2)H(14)][Zn(HPO(4))(2)].xH(2)O (x = approximately 0.46), I, [C(5)N(2)H(14)][Zn(3)(H(2)O)(PO(4))(2)(HPO(4))], II, and [C(5)N(2)H(14)][Zn(2)(HPO(4))(3)].H(2)O, III. While I has a one-dimensional structure, II possesses a two-dimensional layered structure, and III has a three-dimensional structure closely related to the ABW zeolitic architecture. All the compounds consist of vertex linking of ZnO(4), PO(4), and HPO(4) tetrahedral units. The fundamental building unit, single four-membered ring (S4R), is present in all the cases, and the observed differences in their structures result from variations in the connectivity between the S4R units. Thus I has a corner-shared S4R forming an infinite one-dimensional chain, II has two corner-shared chains fused through a 3-coordinated oxygen atom forming a strip and a layer with eight-membered apertures, and III has S4R units connected via oxygen atoms to give rise to channels bound by eight T atoms (T = Zn, P) in all crystallographic directions. Crystal data: I, monoclinic, space group = P2(1)/n (No. 14), a = 8.6053(3) A, b = 13.7129(5) A, c = 10.8184(4) A, beta = 97.946(1) degrees, V = 1264.35(8) A(3), Z = 4; II, monoclinic, space group = P2(1)/c (No. 14), a = 11.1029(1) A, b = 17.5531(4) A, c = 8.2651(2) A, beta = 97.922(2) degrees, V = 1595.42(5) A(3), Z = 4; III, monoclinic, space group = P2(1) (No. 4), a = 8.0310(2) A, b = 10.2475(3) A, c = 10.570(3) A, beta = 109.651(1) degrees, V = 819.24(3) A(3), Z = 2.

Open-framework cadmium succinates of different dimensionalities.

Open-framework cadmium succinates, [CN(3)H(6)](2)[Cd(2)(C(4)H(4)O(4))(Cl)(2)], I; [CN(3)H(6)](2)[Cd(C(4)H(4)O(4))(2)], II; Cd(2)(C(4)H(4)O(4))(2)(C(4)N(2)H(8))(H(2)O)(3), III; [C(4)N(2)H(12)][Cd(2)(C(4)H(4)O(4))(3)].4H(2)O, IV; Cd(C(4)H(4)O(4))(H(2)O)(2), V; and Cd(3)(C(4)H(4)O(4))(2)(OH)(2)], VI, of different dimensionalities have been synthesized by hydrothermal procedure by employing two different strategies, one involving the reaction of Cd salts with organic-amine succinates and the other involving the hydrothermal reaction of Cd salts with a mixture of succinic acid and the organic amine. While the latter procedure yields structures without any amine in them, the former gives rise to amine templated cadmium succinates with open architectures. By employing guanidinium succinate we have obtained I and II, and with piperazinium succinate we obtained III and IV. Of these I has a one-dimensional chain structure, IV has a layered structure, and II and III have three-dimensional architectures. The two cadmium succinates without incorporation of amine, V and VI, possess layered and three-dimensional structures, respectively. The three-dimensional structures II and III exhibit interpenetration similar to that in diamondoid and alpha-polonium type structures, respectively.

Three-dimensional open-framework neodymium oxalates with organic functional groups protruding in 12-member channels.

Two open-framework neodymium oxalates, [NH(3)CH(2)CH(NH(3))CH(3)][Nd(C(2)O(4))(2)(HCOO)].H(2)O (I) and [OC(CH(3))NCH(2)CH(CH(3))NH(3)][Nd(C(2)O(4))(2)].H(2)O (II), have been synthesized hydrothermally in the presence of 1,2-diaminopropane (1,2-DAP) and formic (I) and acetic (II) acids. The Nd atoms in both these oxalates have 9-fold coordination with respect to the oxygens, with the Nd atom in a distorted monocapped square antiprism coordination in I and in an idealized D(3)(h) triply capped trigonal prism coordination in II. The three-dimensional framework structures of I and II are built up by in-plane linkages between the Nd and the oxalate moieties, forming layers with 12-membered honeycomb-like apertures, pillared by an out-of-plane oxalate unit. The 12-memberd channel in I contains a dangling formate group in addition to the disordered amine molecule, while in II, the channel has N-(2-aminopropyl acetimide) molecules formed by the in situ reaction of 1,2-DAP and acetic acid. The accessibility of the formate and N-(2-aminopropyl acetimide) functional groups in I and II, respectively, uniformly distributed within the channels enables chemical manipulation. Crystal data: I, monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c (no. 14), M = 459.5, a = 9.0279(4) A, b = 18.1362(8) A, c = 8.5631(4) A, beta = 102.735(10) degrees, V = 1367.56(11) A(3), Z = 4, R(1) = 0.0229, wR(2) = 0.0599 [1782 observed reflections with I > 2sigma(I)]; II, triclinic, space group P(-)1 (no. 2), M = 454.5, a = 8.6222(9) A, b = 9.5683(10) A, c = 9.5712(10) A, alpha = 109.388(2) degrees, beta = 98.508(10) degrees, gamma = 102.361(12) degrees, V = 706.73(13) A(3), Z = 2, R(1) = 0.0446, wR(2) = 0.115 [1730 observed reflections with I > 2sigma(I)].

Synthesis of a layered zinc phosphate, [NH3(CH2)2NH2(CH2)3NH3][Zn2(PO4)(HPO4)2].H2O, and its transformation to a extra-large pore three-dimensional zinc phosphate, [NH3(CH2)2NH2(CH2)3NH3][Zn3(PO4)(HPO4)3].

An unusual two-dimensional zinc phosphate with pendant phosphate groups, projecting into the inter-lamellar space between the layers, has been synthesized and is shown to transform into a three-dimensional structure with 16-membered bifurcated channels, giving evidence for the building up process in the formation of open-framework structures.
