Dynamical network model of infective mobile agents.

A dynamical network (consisting of a time-evolving wiring of interactions among a group of random walkers) is introduced to model the spread of an infectious disease in a population of mobile individuals. We investigate the main properties of this model, and show that peculiar features arise when individuals are allowed to perform long-distance jumps. Such peculiarities are captured and conveniently quantified by a series of appropriate parameters able to highlight the structural differences emerging in the networks when long-distance jumps are combined with local random walk processes.

On the intrinsic time scales involved in synchronization: a data-driven approach.

We address the problem of detecting, from scalar observations, the time scales involved in synchronization of complex oscillators with several spectral components. Using a recent data-driven procedure for analyzing nonlinear and nonstationary signals [Huang, Proc. R. Soc. London A 454, 903 (1998)], we decompose a time series in distinct oscillation modes which may display a time varying spectrum. When applied to coupled oscillators with multiple time scales, we found that motions are captured in a finite number of phase-locked oscillations. Further, in the synchronized state distinct phenomena as phase slips, anti-phase or perfect phase locking can be simultaneously observed at specific time scales. This fully data-driven approach (without a priori choice of filters or basis functions) is tested on numerical examples and illustrated on electric intracranial signals recorded from an epileptic patient. Implications for the study of the build-up of synchronized states in nonstationary and noisy systems are pointed out.

Predicting phase synchronization in a spiking chaotic CO2 laser.

An approach is presented for the reconstruction of phase synchronization phenomena in a chaotic CO2 laser from experimental data. We analyze this laser system in a regime able to phase synchronize with a weak sinusoidal forcing. Our technique recovers the synchronization diagram of the experimental system from only few measurement data sets, thus allowing the prediction of the regime of phase synchronization as well as nonsynchronization in a broad parameter space of forcing frequency and amplitude without further experiments.
