Raman and surface enhanced Raman microscopy of microstructured polyethylenimine/DNA multilayers.

We analyze microstructured multilayer films of poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) and DNA by employing Raman and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The microstructuring of the samples allows a simultaneous measurement of signal and reference in a single analytic process. Silver nanoparticles are implemented in the microstructured multilayers for SERS measurements. The recorded SERS spectra of PEI/DNA are dominated by the Raman bands of the DNA bases which show a larger mean enhancement than bands belonging to DNA backbone vibrations. Our results show that the combination of SERS and microstructured multilayer films provides an adapted way to characterize the polyelectrolytes as well as to measure the enhancement factor and the distance dependence for the SERS active silver nanoparticles. Furthermore, microstructured polyelectrolyte films containing SERS active nanoparticles are used for sensing molecules.

Electroactuation of fluid using topographical wetting transitions.

The complex morphologies of liquids on topographically structured substrates are exploited for liquid actuation in open microchannels. The liquid is either confined in prefabricated grooves, thus forming elongated filaments, or gathers in macroscopic drops without invading the grooves, depending on conditions. Using the electrowetting effect, we can reversibly switch between these two states. The length of the filaments is sensitive to the ionic content of the liquid and can be described quantitatively with an electrical model considering the voltage drop along the groove.

Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of the dilute wet granular gas.

We present an analytical expression for the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of a wet granular gas. The influence of the liquid is modeled by a hysteretic interaction force. For the dilute limit (two-particle collisions only), we find a simple expression accounting for the contribution of both the scattering states and the bound states in arbitrary dimensions. It is shown that the system is significantly more chaotic than a gas of (dry) hard spheres, as reflected by a pronounced increase of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy.

How plants keep dry: a physicist's point of view.

This work describes the investigation of the physical basis of the amazing water repellence of some plant leaves, which is in addition to self-cleaning properties known as the "Lotus effect". Two rather different possible mechanisms are proposed, which are suggested to cover the main physics in a majority of superhydrophobic systems. These concepts are illustrated with two different types of plant leaves as well as a model surface carrying carbon nanotube aggregates.

Trends in microfluidics with complex fluids.

The rapid developments in biotechnology create a great demand for fluid handling systems on the nano- and picoliter scale. The characterization of minute quantities of DNA or protein samples requires highly integrated, automated, and miniaturized "total analysis systems" (mu-TAS). The small scales necessitate new concepts for devices both from a technological and from a fundamental physical point of view. Here, we describe recent trends in both areas. New technologies include soft lithography, chemical, and topographical structuring of surfaces in order to define pathways for liquids, as well as electro-wetting for manipulation purposes. Fundamentally, the interplay between geometric confinement and the size of biological macromolecules gives rise to complex dynamic behavior. The combination of both fluorescence imaging and scattering techniques allows for detailed insight into the dynamics of individual molecules and into their self-assembly into supramolecular aggregates.

Interface profiles near three-phase contact lines in electric fields.

Long-range electrostatic fields deform the surface profile of a conductive liquid in the vicinity of the contact line. We have investigated the equilibrium profiles by balancing electrostatic and capillary forces locally at the liquid vapor interface. Numerical results show that the contact angle at the contact line approaches Young's angle. Simultaneously, the local curvature displays a weak algebraic divergence. Furthermore, we present an asymptotic analytical model, which confirms these results and elucidates the scaling behavior of the profile close to the contact line.

Shear-induced solid-fluid transition in a wet granular medium.

We present a numerical study of a shear-induced solid-fluid transition in wet granular matter. The simulation is based on a simple model that considers both the cohesive forces induced by the adsorbed liquid amount and the repulsive forces due to the excluded volume interaction of the granules. Dissipation is assumed to be entirely due to the hysteretic character of the cohesive forces. In particular, we analyze the dynamics of the system close to the phase transition from solidlike behavior to a mobile ergodic state under the influence of an external force field F, when the latter exceeds a critical force F(c). Diffusion coefficients, dissipation, and kinetic order parameters can be expressed as characteristic scaling laws.

Mixing and condensation in a wet granular medium.

We have studied the effect of small amounts of added liquid on the dynamic behavior of a granular system consisting of a mixture of glass beads of two different sizes. Segregation of the large beads to the top of the sample is found to depend in a nontrivial way on the liquid content. A transition to viscoplastic behavior occurs at a critical liquid content, which depends upon the bead size. We show that this transition can be interpreted as a condensation due to the hysteretic liquid bridge forces connecting the beads, and we provide the corresponding phase diagram.

Nonlocal dynamics of spontaneous imbibition fronts.

We have studied spontaneous imbibition fronts generated by capillary rise between two roughened glass plates, the separation d of which varied between 10 and 50 microm. Perfect agreement with Washburn's law was obtained. We have determined the roughness exponent chi of the fronts, and found chi=0.81+/-0.01 for small length scales. Above a certain crossover length xi, it reached chi=0.58+/-0.04, as predicted by the quenched noise Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. The crossover length is found to scale with the plate separation as sqrt[d], as predicted by recent models which properly include nonlocal dynamics effects on the front. We believe this to be the first clear identification of crossover from nonlocal to local dynamics.

Generic morphologies of viscoelastic dewetting fronts.

A simple model is put forward which accounts for the occurrence of certain generic dewetting morphologies in thin liquid coatings. It demonstrates that, by taking into account the elastic properties of the coating, a morphological phase diagram may be derived which describes the observed structures of dewetting fronts. It is demonstrated that dewetting morphologies may also serve to determine nanoscale rheological properties of liquids.
