Synthesis, ionisation potentials and electron affinities of hexaazatrinaphthylene derivatives.

Several hexaazatrinaphthylene derivatives and a tris(thieno)hexaazatriphenylene derivative have been synthesised by reaction of the appropriate diamines with hexaketocyclohexane. The crystal structure of 2,3,8,9,14,15-hexachloro-5,6,11,12,17,18-hexaazatrinaphthylene has been determined by X-ray diffraction; this reveals a molecular structure in good agreement with that predicted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and pi-stacking with an average spacing between adjacent molecular planes of 3.18 A. Solid-state ionisation potentials have been measured by using UV photoelectron spectroscopy and fall in the range of 5.99 to 7.76 eV, whereas solid-state electron affinities, measured using inverse photoelectron spectroscopy, vary in the range -2.65 to -4.59 eV. The most easily reduced example is a tris(thieno)hexaazatriphenylene substituted with bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl groups; DFT calculations suggest that the highly exothermic electron affinity is due both to the replacement of the outermost phenylene rings of hexaazatrinaphthylene with thieno groups and to the presence of electron-withdrawing bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl groups. The rather exothermic electron affinities, the potential for adopting pi-stacked structures and the low intramolecular reorganisation energies obtained by DFT calculations suggest that some of these molecules may be useful electron-transport materials.

Extended squaraine dyes with large two-photon absorption cross-sections.

Extended bis(donor)-substituted squaraine chromophores exhibit very high two-photon cross-sections (as high as 33 000 GM) in the near-IR; these can be attributed to the combination of large transition dipoles with small detuning energies. The modulus of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility at 1.3 mum has been found to be 7.0 x 10-11 esu for one of these chromophores.

Bisdioxaborine polymethines with large third-order nonlinearities for all-optical signal processing.

Organic materials with large third-order nonlinearities in the near-infrared spectral regime are critical in the development of photonic devices to be utilized in all-optical signal processing. We have developed polymethine materials, specifically bisdioxaborine-terminated polymethine dyes, which possess large ultrafast third-order nonlinearities and low nonlinear loss all in the near-infrared spectral regime. An extended bisdioxaborine polymethine anion exhibited the largest value of gamma (third-order microscopic nonlinearity) at 1.3 mum (|gamma| = 5.7 x 10-32 esu) and showed no characteristics of symmetry breaking, unlike other polymethines of similar lengths. A neat film of this molecule maintained relatively low linear loss in the near-infrared and showed a large third-order macroscopic nonlinearity at 1.3 mum (|chi(3)| = 3.6 x 10-10 esu), with a temporal response of less than 8 ps. Furthermore, the real part of chi(3) was nearly an order-of-magnitude larger than the imaginary component. Consequently, this material exhibited good figures of merit for all-optical signal processing throughout the entire telecommunications band.

Isolation and crystal structures of two singlet bis(triarylamine) dications with nonquinoidal geometries.

We report the first structural data for bis(diarylamine) "bipolarons": we have isolated and crystallographically characterized salts of the dications obtained by two-electron oxidation of E-4,4'-bis[di(p-anisyl)amino]stilbene and E,E-2,5-bis{4-[di(p-anisyl)amino]styryl}-3,4-di(n-butoxy)thiophene, [1](2+) and [2](2+) respectively. ESR, NMR, and magnetometry suggest both species have singlet ground states. X-ray structures, together with (1)H NMR coupling constants for [2](2+), indicate geometries in which the bond lengths are shifted toward a quinoidal pattern relative to that in the neutral species, but not to a fully quinoidal extent. In particular, the bond-length alternations across the vinylene bridging groups approach zero. DFT calculations with closed-shell singlet configurations reproduce the observed structures well. Our results indicate that singlet species for which one might expect quinoidal geometries (with differences of ca. 0.1 A between formally single and double bonds) on the basis of a limiting valence-bond representation of the structure can, in fact, show structures with significantly different patterns of bond lengths.

Intervalence transitions in the mixed-valence monocations of bis(triarylamines) linked with vinylene and phenylene-vinylene bridges.

(E)-4,4'-Bis[bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]stilbene, 1, (E,E)-1,4-bis[4-[bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]styryl]benzene, 2, and two longer homologues, (E,E,E)-4,4'-bis[4-[bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]styryl]stilbene, 3, and (E,E,E,E)-1,4-bis(4-[4-[bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]styryl]styryl)benzene, 4, have been oxidized to their mono- and dications using tris(4-bromophenyl)aminium hexachloroantimonate. The intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) band of 1(+) is narrow and asymmetric and exhibits only weak solvatochromism. Analysis of this band indicates that 1(+) is a class-III or class-II/III borderline mixed-valence species. In contrast, a broad, strongly solvatochromic IVCT band is observed for 2(+), indicating that this species is a class-II mixed-valence species. The assignment of 1(+ ) and 2(+) as symmetric class-III and unsymmetric class-II species, respectively, is also supported by AM1 calculations. Hush analysis of the IVCT bands of both 1(+) and 2(+) gives larger electronic couplings, V, than for their analogues in which the double bonds are replaced with triple bonds. The diabatic electron-transfer distance, R, in 1(+) can be estimated by comparison of the V estimated by Hush analysis and from the IVCT maximum; it is considerably less than the geometric N-N separation, a result supported by quantum-chemical estimates of R for 1(+)-4(+). In 3(+) and 4(+), the IVCT is largely obscured by an intense absorption similar to a band seen in the corresponding dications and to that observed in the monocation of a model compound, (E,E,E)-1-[bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-4-[4-[4-(4-tert-butylstyryl)styryl]styryl]benzene, 5, containing only one nitrogen redox center; we attribute this band to a bridge-to-N(+) transition. The corresponding dications 1(2+)-4(2+) show a complementary trend in the coupling between redox centers: the shortest species is diamagnetic, while the dication with the longest bridge behaves as two essentially noninteracting radical centers.

High charge-carrier mobility in an amorphous hexaazatrinaphthylene derivative.

An isomeric mixture of a tris(pentafluorobenzyl ester) derivative of hexaazatrinaphthylene forms stable amorphous films with an effective charge-carrier mobility of 0.02 cm2/Vs, while the pure 2,8,15-isomer exhibits widely differing morphologies and carrier mobilities (0.001-0.07 cm2/Vs), depending critically on the processing conditions.

Koopmans-based analysis of the optical spectra of p-phenylene-bridged intervalence radical ions.

[Figure: see text]. The optical spectra of 10 p-phenylene-bridged delocalized intervalence compounds MC6H4M*- or *+ are analyzed using the Koopmans-based method, which considers only transitions from filled orbitals to the singly occupied orbital (SOMO), called Hoijtink type A transitions, and from the SOMO to unoccupied orbitals, Hoijtink type B transitions, and ignores configuration interaction. The radical ions with quinonoid structures, those that form ring-M double bonds with M = C(CN)2, NMe2, 3-oxo-9-azabicyclo[3.3.1], NPPh3, and O when the odd electron of the intervalence oxidation level is removed, are calculated to have the lowest-allowed type B transition lying mostly above the lowest-allowed A transition, with B(i)- A(j) decreasing in the order shown from +14 370 to -1390 cm(-1), and the more intense second-lowest-allowed type B transition B(i) - A(j) from +14 940 to +7070 cm(-1). The five radical anions with benzenoid structures, which form ring-M single bonds with X = CN, CO2Me, CHO, C3HMeBF2O2, and NO2 when the odd electron of the intervalence oxidation level is removed, have a B(i)- A(j) value of the opposite sign that increases in magnitude from -2880 to -17 050 cm(-)(1) in the order shown. Configuration interaction is of course present in the observed spectra, and the predictions ignoring it mostly overestimate transition energies by 1900-2600 cm(-1) for the quinonoid compounds (but by 450 cm(-1) for the M = C(CN)2 radical anion), and by 1000-1400 cm(-1) for the benzenoid compounds (2500 cm(-1) for the M = CN radical anion). The very simple Koopmans-based model is useful for considering the optical spectra of these radical ions.

A fluorine-substituted hexakisdecyloxy- hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene.

[structure: see text] The first fluorine-substituted hexabenzocoronene has been synthesized and is much more readily reduced than its nonfluorinated analogues. Thin films of this material show columnar order at room temperature, and the charge-carrier mobility measured by the pulse-radiolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity technique is comparable to that of other hexabenzocoronene materials.

Aromatic amines: a comparison of electron-donor strengths.

The electron-donor abilities of ten aminophenyl systems and an additional aminothienyl system are compared using density functional theory calculations. The systems studied here include those with amine nitrogen atoms bearing alkyl or aryl groups and those with amine nitrogen atoms as part of a heterocycle. Their abilities to act as donors in electron-transfer processes are assessed from calculated vertical ionization potentials for the aminobenzenes, which are in good agreement with available experimental data. Their abilities to act as intramolecular pi-electron donors in conjugated systems are inferred from the bond lengths and charge densities calculated for the corresponding 4-aminobenzaldehydes and 4-aminobenzonitriles. The computed (13)C NMR chemical shifts for the 4-aminobenzaldehydes and 4-aminobenzonitriles are in good agreement with published and new experimental data. The chemical shifts correlate well with the computed charge densities and can, to some extent, be used as an experimental probe of pi-donor strength. We find that the electron-transfer-donor strengths do not correlate well with pi-donor strengths: these differences can largely be attributed to steric effects.

Strong, low-energy two-photon absorption in extended amine-terminated cyano-substituted phenylenevinylene oligomers.

Three quadrupolar oligophenylenevinylenes with five rings in the conjugated backbone, terminal donor groups, and various acceptors and/or donors along the backbone were synthesized and their two-photon spectroscopic properties investigated. These chromophores exhibit large two-photon absorption cross sections over a wide wavelength range and two distinct peaks, the strongest of which (deltamax > 3600 GM) is observed at 960-970 nm, a wavelength close to twice the value of the linear absorption maximum (2lambda(1)max). The findings on these chromophores are compared with those for analogous molecules with shorter conjugation length, for which the main two-photon band is at significantly shorter wavelength than 2lambda(1)max.

Electronic coupling in mixed-valence dinuclear ferrocenes and cobaltocenes with saturated bridging groups.

We have synthesised a series of new dinuclear metallocenes [{M(Cp*)(C5H4)}2X] (Cp* = eta5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; M = Fe, Co, X = CMe2, SiMe2, GeMe2; M = Fe, X = Si2Me4). For the neutral dicobalt complexes, magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions of -21 and -14 cm(-1) for SiMe2- and GeMe2-bridged species, respectively, but negligible interaction for the CMe2-bridged compound. In contrast, intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) data for the mixed-valence monocations of both Fe and Co complexes show electronic coupling to decrease in the order CMe2 > SiMe2 > GeMe2. This suggests that electronic coupling is principally through-space in contrast to results found from previous studies. The IVCT data also show much stronger coupling in the dicobalt species versus their diiron analogues.

Electron affinities of 1,1-diaryl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles: direct measurements and comparison with experimental and theoretical estimates.

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical characterization of the electronic structure of four 1,1-diaryl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles (aryl = phenyl, 2-(9,9-dimethylfluorenyl), 2-thienyl, pentafluorophenyl). Solid-state electron affinities and ionization potentials of these siloles were measured using inverse-photoelectron spectroscopy (IPES) and photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), respectively; the density of electronic states obtained from calculations performed at the density functional theory (DFT) level corresponds very well to the PES and IPES data. The direct IPES measurements of electron affinity were then used to assess alternative estimates based on electrochemical and/or optical data. We also used DFT to calculate the reorganization energies for the electron-transfer reactions between these siloles and their radical anions. Additionally, optical data and ionization potential and electron affinity data were utilized to estimate the binding energies of excitons in these siloles.

Two-photon absorption at telecommunications wavelengths in a dipolar chromophore with a pyrrole auxiliary donor and thiazole auxiliary acceptor.

Three new dipolar chromophores based on a diaklyaminophenyl donor, a pyrrole auxiliary donor, a thiazole auxiliary acceptor, and strong heterocyclic acceptors have been synthesized. For one of these compounds we have measured a very large non-degenerate two-photon cross section of ca. 1500 GM in the near-IR telecommunications range using a pump-probe technique. Calculations indicate the cross section for degenerate two-photon absorption is likely to be ca. 60% of this value.

Delocalization in platinum-alkynyl systems: a metal-bridged organic mixed-valence compound.

A complex featuring two triarylamine redox centers bridged by Pt, trans-bis(triethylphosphine)-bis{4-[bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]phenylethynyl} platinum(II), has been synthesized as a model system for pi-conjugated Pt-containing polymers. Analysis of the intervalence charge-transfer band displayed by its mixed-valence monocation affords a quantitative assessment of electronic delocalization through the Pt bridge; this is found to be only slightly smaller than that determined for a benzene-bridged analogue. These results are supported by density functional theory calculations, which show that the active orbitals involved in the electron-transfer process in both cases have similar delocalization through the bridging unit.

Two-photon absorption in linear bis-dioxaborine compounds-the impact of correlation-induced oscillator-strength redistribution.

Quantum-chemical calculations of the two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-sections are used to determine the characteristics of the electronic excited states responsible for the observed peaks in the TPA spectra of two bis-dioxaborine-substituted biphenyl derivatives. We find two distinct TPA-active states with very different TPA cross-sections: the difference is explained on the basis of electron correlation. These effects, on the one hand, lead to TPA cross-sections of up to 500 x 10(-50) cm4 s photon(-1) for the state favored by correlation; on the other hand, they limit the overall cross-sections achievable in this class of materials.

Electronic couplings in organic mixed-valence compounds: the contribution of photoelectron spectroscopy.

We show that the electronic coupling in strongly coupled organic mixed-valence systems can be effectively probed by means of gas-phase ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). Taking six diamines as examples, the UPS estimates for the electronic couplings H(ab) are compared with the corresponding values determined from the intervalence charge-transfer absorption bands and from electronic structure calculations. Similar trends are observed for the H(ab) values estimated from UPS and optical spectra; this provides support for the applicability of Hush theory to strongly coupled organic mixed-valence systems. The UPS electronic couplings are found to be somewhat smaller than those from optical spectroscopy, which is attributed to the role of vibronic coupling to symmetrical modes; when corrected for this vibronic coupling, the UPS H(ab) estimates confirm that triarylamine-based mixed-valence systems are close to the class-II/class-III borderline.
