Experimental realization of maximum confidence quantum state discrimination for the extraction of quantum information.

We present the first experimental demonstration of the maximum confidence measurement strategy for quantum state discrimination. Applying this strategy to an arbitrary set of states assigns to each input state a measurement outcome which, when realized, gives the highest possible confidence that the state was indeed present. The theoretically optimal measurement for discriminating between three equiprobable symmetric qubit states is implemented in a polarization-based free-space interferometer. The maximum confidence in the measurement result is 2/3. This is the first explicit demonstration that an improvement in the confidence over the optimal minimum error measurement is possible for linearly dependent states.

Polarization and image rotation induced by a rotating dielectric rod: an optical angular momentum interpretation.

When light is transmitted along the axis of a rotating glass rod, the polarization of the light is rotated through a small angle [Proc. R. Soc. London, Ser. A349, 423 (1976)]. Under the same conditions, we predict a rotation of the transmitted image by exactly the same angle. The treatment of the two effects in terms of light's spin and orbital angular momentum suggests that they share a common origin.

Quasi-intrinsic angular momentum and the measurement of its spectrum.

We introduce the concept of quasi-intrinsic angular momentum to denote fields for which the mean value of the angular momentum is unaltered by a lateral shift of the rotation axis but the spectrum changes. This property is exemplified by the orbital angular momentum of a beam of light about its propagation direction. We propose an interferometric experiment to measure efficiently the exact angular momentum spectrum and variance for light beams with any arbitrary spatial distribution.

Maximum confidence quantum measurements.

We consider the problem of discriminating between states of a specified set with maximum confidence. For a set of linearly independent states unambiguous discrimination is possible if we allow for the possibility of an inconclusive result. For linearly dependent sets an analogous measurement is one which allows us to be as confident as possible that when a given state is identified on the basis of the measurement result, it is indeed the correct state.

Interferometric methods to measure orbital and spin, or the total angular momentum of a single photon.

We propose interferometric methods capable of measuring either the total angular momentum, or simultaneously measuring the spin and orbital angular momentum of single photons. This development enables the measurement of any angular momentum eigenstate of a single photon. The work allows the investigation of single-photon two-qubit entangled states and has implications for high density information transfer.

Experimental demonstration of quantum source coding.

We report an experimental demonstration of Schumacher's quantum noiseless coding theorem. Our experiment employs a sequence of single photons, each of which represents three qubits in terms of eight spatial and polarization modes. We initially prepare each photon in one of a set of eight nonorthogonal code word states corresponding to the value of a block of three binary letters. We use quantum coding to compress this quantum data into a two-qubit quantum channel and then uncompress the two-qubit channel to restore the original data with a fidelity approaching the theoretical limit.

Interferometry below the standard quantum limit with Bose-Einstein condensates.

We discuss a scheme for using entangled Bose-Einstein condensates to detect phase differences with a resolution better than the standard quantum limit. To date, schemes have shown that the enhancement in phase resolution gained by entangling condensates is lost when dissipation is present. Here we show how this can be overcome by using number correlated condensates, as have been produced recently in the laboratory. We also outline a scheme for measuring this phase that is not destroyed when the effects of finite detector efficiency are considered.

Measuring the orbital angular momentum of a single photon.

We propose an interferometric method for measuring the orbital angular momentum of single photons. We demonstrate its viability by sorting four different orbital angular momentum states, and are thus able to encode two bits of information on a single photon. This new approach has implications for entanglement experiments, quantum cryptography and high density information transfer.
