[Morphogenetic aspect of the influence of purified birch tar on skin].

Changes of the histological structure of rat's skin were studied two weeks following the daily applications of native birch tar and of purified birch tar, devoid of the components that could be potentially dangerous for humans. The morphometric investigations were performed with the use of computer technologies on the apparatus-programme complex (DiaMorph, Russia). It has been established that the main morphological manifestations of specific dermatotropic activity of birch tar in the present experiment included: epidermal hypertrophy, hyperkeratosis, stimulation of the activity of all dermal cellular elements, intensification of blood supply, reduction of sebaceous glands. Analysis of morphological findings indicates the bioequivalence of the native and purified birch tar in terms of its specific dermatotropic activity.

[Morphological aspects of dermatotrophic action of methyluracil applied epicutaneously].

The changes of the histological structure of intact skin and of the skin within the area of burn trauma, caused by treatment with methyluracil-containing ointments, were studied. Morphometric investigations employing computer technologies have been performed using "DiaMorph" device-program complex (Russia). It was established that methyluracil possessed wound-healing properties by stimulating epidermal proliferation in the zone of injury and by modifying an inflammatory reaction enhancing its fibroblastic component. Daily applications of methyluracil to intact skin for a period of half a year resulted in some reduction of reserve capabilities of cambial keratinocytes, that was objectively manifested by a decrease of epidermal germinal layer thickness.

[The morphofunctional characteristics of the vascular bed of the lymph nodes].

By means of silver nitrate impregnation and ATPase methods the distribution of all links of the lymph node vascular bed has been investigated. Structure of the blood capillary wall has been studied electron microscopically; they are defined as capillaries of the I type, that is having a continuous endothelial and basal layers and a small diameter. An essential amount of ribosomes is specific for blood capillary endothelium in the lymph nodes. A dendrite-like ramification of the portal veins is described, dichotomic--for the cerebral arteries, as well as the distribution of cortical arteries and arterioles. The postcapillary venules are found to localize around the lymphoid noduli and in the paracortical zone. Morphological bases for better exchange between blood and lymph are demonstrated in the cortex of the lymph node. Morphological signs of littoral cells of the lymphatic sinuses have been investigated and a conclusion is made on similarity in the structure of the lymphatic sinus wall and the wall of the lymphatic capillaries. Tight structural interrelations have been stated to exist between the wall of the lymph node blood vessels, its stroma and the wall of the lymphatic sinuses.

[Experience with a combined test exam in dermatovenereology].

The traditional oral examination in clinical dermatology is not devoid of shortcomings, the principal of which are subjective estimation of the students' knowledge and a random control. A written examination, representing a complex of tests, is devoid of these drawbacks. The authors share their two-year experience with such examinations, combined with the control of mastering the practical skills in dermatology and venereology. The major advantages of a written test-based examination in a clinical discipline are an objective estimation of the students' knowledge, a universal complex of tests equally difficult for all the students, permitting the control of knowledge in practically all sections of the curriculum, and a more rational organization of the examination session. Such examinations are recommended for dermatology and venereology chairs.

[Macrophage activation in the immune response].

In inbred white rats, immunized with sheep erythrocytes, contents and phagocytic activity of the spleen and pulmonary macrophages have been studied on the 3d, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 11th, 14th and 20th days of the experiment in the light, scanning and transmissive electron microscope, as well as the effect of the cells mentioned on proliferation of lymphoid elements. Maximal phagocytic activity of the splenic and alveolar macrophages is observed on the 7th day of the experiment. At the same time, certain drop in the lymphoid cells proliferation takes place. The change in the macrophages contents also influences proliferation of the lymphoid cells.

[Biopsy data on the ultrastructural changes in the cerebral cortex in Vilyui encephalomyelitis].

Biopsies from the cortex of the right frontal lobe of 3 patients with chronic Vilyui encephalomyelitis were examined light- and electron microscopically. The characteristic degenerative changes in the gangliocytes and especially in the nerve fibers are typical for this disease; particularly severe lesions were found in the myelin sheaths and to a lesser extent in the axons. Myelin sheaths lamella, external mitochondrial membranes and other organelles showed osmiophilic degeneration with their destruction and release of peculiar crystal-like formations having an elective localization in the processes cytoplasm and not in the perikaryon. Abnormal chromatin agglomeration, increase in size and ectopy of nucleoli were observed.

[Electrophysiological study of olfactory sensitivity in the carp].

Responses of single olfactory tract fibers cut off from prosencephalon to adequate stimulation of the carp olfactory epithelium revealed that the threshold sensitivity to aminoacids fell in the range between 10(-12) and 10(-10) M, that the magnitude and the form of the response depended on the concentration and type of stimulus as well as on the level of background activity. The results are compared with the biochemical data obtained earlier.

[Regulation of signals in the chemosensory systems of fish].

Irritation of olfactory lining and adjacent skin with chemical solutions elicited electrical signals not only in the olfactory system, but in the fibers of nn. trigeminus and facialis of the fish. Latency is shorter in the trigeminal system than in the olfactory one. Electrical stimulation of the nn. trigeminus, facialis, of the contralateral olfactory tracts modulates the signals coming to the olfactory bulb and projecting from it as well as inhibits the response to adeguate olfactory stimulation. Stimulation of afferents of the nn. trigeminus and facialis modulates signals in their efferent fibers both contra- and ipsilaterally.

[Analysis of causes of death of patients with chronic circulatory insufficiency].

The presented analysis is based on the case reports of 166 patients who had been treated in the A. L. Myasnikov Cardiology Institute, USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, for rheumatic heart diseases (97), postinfarction cardiosclerosis (35), myocardiopathies (24) complicated by Stage III or IIB circulatory insufficiency. Chronic circulatory insufficiency free of complications was the cause of death of only 1/3 of the mortality cases. The rest of the patients' death was considered to be caused by thromboembolism, predominantly to the pulmonary artery system, pneumonias, haemorrhages from acute and subacute gastric ulcers, etc. The factors most frequently complicating the chronic circulatory insufficiency in patients suffering either from heart diseases, cardiosclerosis, or myocardiopathy, were thromboembolisms.
