Industrial use of isocyanate resins rarely causes allergic contact dermatitis. We report a patient who developed allergic contact dermatitis to a transitory chemical breakdown product of the isocyanate 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM), although he was not sensitized to the suspected parent compound MDI.
Allergic contact dermatitis to ultraviolet (UV) cured acrylates occurs predominantly in occupationally exposed workers. Two men presented with dermatitis coinciding with the location of banknotes in their pockets. Patch testing confirmed allergic contact dermatitis to multiple acrylates and Australian plastic banknotes. This is the first report of contact allergy to acrylates present in Australian plastic banknotes.
Allergic contact dermatitis to shampoo is rare. Report of a patient with widespread dermatitis caused by contact allergy to Kathon CG and cocamidopropylbetaine in shampoo used is presented.
The compound 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) is the active ingredient in Proxel GXL a commonly used preservative in many industries. The present case report identifies the carpet industry as an additional source of occupational allergic contact dermatitis to BIT.
Chloroacetamide is an uncommon skin care product allergen. A case of allergic contact dermatitis to this preservative is described in a patient who reacted to an underarm deodorant.
Neuronal migration, differentiation, and synapse formation are developmental processes within the CNS significantly influenced by ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptor activity. Extracellular glutamate concentrations mediating this activity are regulated by transport proteins localized in neuronal and glial cell membranes. We have used in situ hybridization analysis with subtype-specific antisense-oligonucleotides to study the distribution of glia-specific excitatory amino acid transporter (mEAAT1 and mEAAT2) mRNAs during the later stages of embryogenesis and postnatal CNS development. Distinct but overlapping embryonic and postnatal patterns of localization were observed for the two transporter transcripts. Both mEAAT1 and mEAAT2 mRNAs were found during the peak period of gliogenesis (E15-E19) in the telencephalic and mesencephalic CNS proliferative zones. The overall expression of mEAAT1 mRNA diminished after the completion of cell migration, whereas mEAAT2 mRNA expression increased significantly during postnatal development. Interestingly, mEAAT2 transcript expression continued in the subventricular zone postnatally and persisted in this proliferative zone in the adult brain. From PO onward, mEAAT1 mRNA was present predominantly in the cerebellar Purkinje cell layer and at a much lower abundance in the cortex, hippocampus, basal nuclei, and septum, whereas from P7 onward, mEAAT2 mRNA expression increased throughout most of the neuraxis. Postnatally, transcripts for mEAAT1 and mEAAT2 were found in cell bodies, processes, and commissural white matter tracts of the CNS. The divergent temporal and spatial expression of EAAT subtypes and their persistence in mature fiber tracts and radial glia layers reveal that specific EAATs are likely to play multiple distinct roles in the developing and adult CNS, including the regulation of cell proliferation, axon-glia interactions, and neuronal survival.
Allergic contact dermatitis to garlic usually has a typical clinical presentation but this is often masked if it presents concurrently with another form of hand dermatitis. Patch testing with 1% diallyl disulfide in petrolatum is recommended when garlic allergy is suspected.
This report sites two patients with allergic contact dermatitis to topical lignocaine. In separate instances they also developed severe localized reactions following injections of the drug.
A case of occupational contact dermatitis to gold is presented. This is uncommon as gold is relatively insoluble. Allergic contact dermatitis to gold is confirmed by patch testing with gold sodium thiosulfate 0.5% in petrolatum. Occupational contact dermatitis in the gold industry can be reduced by providing workers with more protective gear and better ventilation.
The complete coding sequence of a mouse glutamate transporter (mEAAT2) has been cloned by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from adult whole-brain total RNA. Southern hybridization analysis of PCR products amplified from templates derived from various murine adult tissues demonstrated that the transcript for mEAAT2 was specific to the central nervous system. High-affinity transport of D-aspartate, Km value (17 +/- 5 microM), was determined in a vaccinia/T7 RNA polymerase expression system. The deduced amino-acid sequence of mEAAT2 shares 96 and 93% identity with the rat and human EAAT2 homologues, respectively.
Penile melanosis is an uncommon benign primary pigmentary disorder affecting the penile shaft and/or glans. We report the successful treatment of penile melanosis using the Q-switched ruby laser.
We report a case of lichen planus coexisting with psoriasis in a black patient. As the lesions of lichen planus appeared similar in appearance to the psoriatic plaques its diagnosis was missed by several dermatologists. This may be due to the dark skin of this patient making the characteristic clinical differences between the two conditions less obvious. The coexistence of these two relatively common conditions is probably under reported in the literature. However, differentiation is important as treatment and prognosis of the two disorders differ.
With the goal of preventing crimes against children, the NCMEC--in cooperation with the FBI, the IAHSS, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing--has studied infant abductions from hospitals and other sites, and considers them preventable in large part by "hardening the target."
A survey of the incidence and prevalence of non-melanocytic skin cancer in Geraldton, Western Australia, was undertaken in November 1987. All residents aged 40 to 64 years whose names were on the electoral roll on August 1, 1987 were invited to undergo a whole-body skin examination by a dermatologist. When a skin cancer was suspected, participants were referred for treatment to their usual medical practitioner. Subjects were asked to recall incident skin cancers over the preceding two years, and medical records were searched for confirmatory evidence. Histological confirmation of all lesions, both prevalent and incident, was sought and sections were obtained for a standardized review. The prevalence of confirmed non-melanocytic skin cancer in those aged 40 to 64 years was 7.0% in men and 4.7% in women. The prevalence of basal-cell carcinoma (BCC) was 6.5% in men and 4.5% in women while the prevalence of squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) was 1.2% in men and 0.3% in women. The estimated incidence rate of non-melanocytic skin cancer in this age group was 1560 per 100,000 person-years. The estimated incidence rate of BCC in men was 1335 per 100,000 person-years, and in women 817 per 100,000, while in men the estimated incidence rate of SCC was 890 per 100,000 person-years, and in women it was 289 per 100,000 person-years.
A 46 year old man with Crohn's disease developed a widespread pustular eruption associated with intermittent fever and arthritis. Histological examination demonstrated cutaneous vasculitis with leukocytoclasia, and IgM and C3 on direct immunofluorescence. This is characteristic of the bowel-associated dermatosis-arthritis syndrome, also known as the bowel bypass syndrome without bypass, a recently described complication of inflammatory bowel disease. This is the ninth case reported to date.
