[Prooxidant-antioxidant condition under increased convulsive activity].

During the clinical-biochemical research it was found that the trand's manner of epileptic disease in general is determined by the oxidative-antioxidant balance condition in the sick organism. The experimental research, made on rats, which were under bemegrid kindling confirmed the supposition that the pro-antioxidant brain balance disruption is one of the major factors in the increased convulsive activity development and probably plays the key role in the genesis and clinical revelation of epilepsy.

[Role of grandaxin in the treatment of functional gastrointestinal diseases].

AIM: To assess efficacy of grandaxine in correction of anxiety syndrome and vegetative dysfunction in patients with gastrointestinal diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The trial included 59 patients with functional gastrointestinal, emotional and vegetative disorders who failed standard therapy. 43 patients of the test group received standard therapy in combination with grandaxine. RESULTS: Anxiety (Spilberg-Khanin scale), vegetative dysfunction (Vein scale) reduced in 90% of the patients of the test group more significantly than in the control group. Intestinal passage in patients with irritable colon syndrome improved also. CONCLUSION: A pronounced role of psychovegetative disorders was confirmed in development of functional gastrointestinal disorders. Grandaxine proved efficient in correction of such disorders irrespective of location of the pathology and prevalent tonicity of the autonomic nervous system.

[Immunocorrective therapy of severe forms of hepatitis B].

Fifty-five patients with viral hepatitis B complicated by liver precoma and coma received therapy with glucocorticosteroid hormones (GCS) only and in combination with antilymphocyte immunoglobulin (ALG). GCS and ALG therapy proved to be more effective and clinical convalescence of the patients was 79% against 69% with the application of GCS therapy alone. Immunological shifts in patients with hepatitis B complicated by liver precoma and coma were expressed at most and characterized by a significant decrease in the content of T-lymphocytes, T-helpers and T-suppressors. Correlation between a decrease in the HBsAg concentration or its disappearance in the blood serum and a decrease in the elevated level of the circulating immune complexes was revealed.

[Treatment of giardia in children under current conditions: efficacy and choice of specific drug].

The formalin ester-enrichment test for giardiasis was used to examine 742 children aged under 14 years at children's clinical hospitals in the town of Perm in February to October 2000. All the children had symptoms of gastrointestinal lesions. Giardiasis was detected in 26.4% of the children; including 21% among 200 children aged 0-2 years, 26.6% among 297 children aged 3-6 years, 30.6% among 245 children aged 7-14 years. Various background abnormalities were revealed in 158 children, including 62 and 68 children aged 3-6 and 7-17 years, respectively. The background abnormality makes a clinical diagnosis of giardiasis difficult and lowers the efficiency of specific treatment. Macmiror and tiberal are the most effective in treating giardiasis in all age-group children. Tiberal is preferable for treating children without background abnormalities. Specific treatment for giardiasis should be combined with the use of probiotics and enzymes.

[Experience with the use of nemocide (pyrantel pamoate) in nematodiases].

The clinical efficacy of and tolerance to the nemocide pyranthel pamoate produced by "IPCA" (India) and applied to nematodiasis treatment have been investigated. A high efficacy of the drug (94.4-100%) for ascariasis, enterobiasis and ancylostomiasis treatment has been established. The drug is well tolerated by adults and induces slight short-term alterations of hepatic functional activity in 5-10-year-old children.

[Defect in deamination of biogenic amines in spontaneous hypertension].

Activity of monoamine oxidases (MAO) of the types A and B (substrates: 5-hydroxytryptamine, 2-phenylethylamine, tyramine) has been studied in mitochondrial fractions from brain, heart, liver and kidney of 24-week-old rats of the normotonic strain Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and spontaneously hypertonic rats (SHR). As compared with the WKY rats, in the SHR strain the activity of MAO-A in heart mitochondria was increased 1.5-1.7-fold; in liver mitochondria the activities of both MAO-A and -B were increased 2.6-2.7-fold. In brain mitochondria there was noted only slight tendency towards an increase in MAO-A (substrate: 5-hydroxytryptamine) and MAO-B (substrate: 2-phenylethylamine) activities in the SHR strain as compared with the normotonic animals of the same age. However, in experiments with tyramine as a substrate of MAO the enzymatic activity in SHR brain mitochondria was increased 1.5-fold (P less than 0.05) as compared with the WKY rats. In kidney mitochondria of SHR the activity of MAO (substrates: 5-hydroxytryptamine, 2-phenylethylamine, tyramine) did not exhibit any alterations as compared with the control WKY rats.
