Dactylogyridean monogeneans of the siluriform fishes of the Old World.

This is a catalogue and discussion of the known dactylogyridean monogenean genera of siluriform fishes of the Old World. Of a total of 38 nominal genera, only 19 are considered valid. Seventeen of these 19 genera are currently in the Ancyrocephalidae (containing the Ancyrocephalinae and Ancylodiscoidinae), whilst the other two (Neocalceostoma and Neocalceostomoides) are in the Neocalceostomatidae. The 17 genera are Anchylodiscus, Ancylodiscoides, Bagrobdella, Bifurcohaptor, Bychowskyella, Chauhanellus, Cornudiscoides, Hamatopeduncularia, Mizelleus, Paraquadriacanthus, Pseudancylodiscoides, Protoancylodiscoides, Quadriacanthus, Schilbetrema, Schilbetrematoides, Synodontella and Thaparocleidus. Clariotrema Long, 1981 and Neobychowskyella Ma, Wang & Li, 1983 are considered synonyms of Bychowskyella Akhmerov, 1952, Anacornuatus Dubey, Gupta & Agarwal, 1992 is considered a synonym of Quadriacanthus Paperna, 1961, Mizellebychowskia Gupta & Sachdeva, 1990 is considered a synonym of Neocalceostoma Tripathi, 1959 and Hargitrema Tripathi, 1959 is treated as a synonym of Hamatopeduncularia Yamaguti, 1953. It is proposed that the Ancylodiscoidinae be raised to family status within the order Dactylogyridea to accommodate these 17 'ancyrocephalid' genera from siluriforms, together with Malayanodiscoides and Notopterodiscoides from notopterids. A key and the diagnostic characteristics of the 19 recognised dactylogyridean genera from catfishes plus two from notopterids, together with a list of species and synonyms, are included. New combinations made in this work are Thaparocleidus avicularia (Chen, 1987) n. comb., T. calyciflorus (Chen, 1987) n. comb., T. choanovagina (Luo & Lang, 1981) n. comb., T. dissimilis (Chen, 1988) n. comb., T. leiocassis (Reichenbach-Klinke, 1959) n. comb., T. meticulosa (Chen, 1987) n. comb., T. parasoti (Zhao & Ma, 1999) n. comb., T. persculpus (Chen, 1987) n. comb., T. valga (Chen, 1987) n. comb. and T. wulingensis (Yao & Wang, 1997) n. comb. [all from Silurodiscoides] and Bychowskyella glyptothoraci (Ma, Wang & Li, 1983) n. comb. [from Neobychowskyella].

[Adsorption on synthetic membranes and immunogenic properties of aprotinin cross-linked by glutaraldehyde].

A procedure for the intermolecular crosslinking of aprotinin (natural polypeptide, an inhibitor of serine proteases) by glutaraldehyde was proposed. This autoconjugation of aprotinin increased its immunogenicity and the efficiency of sorption on nitrocellulose and polyvinylidene difluoride membranes. The immunization of animals by the autoconjugated aprotinin induced the production of antibodies that reacted with both conjugated and monomeric aprotinin. The properties of the crosslinked aprotinin are promising for the enhancement of sensitivity through its use in EIA and immunoblotting membrane methods that employ aprotinin and antiaprotinin antibodies.

Covalent chromatography of influenza virus membrane M1 protein on activated thiopropyl Sepharose-6B.

The M1 protein of influenza virus is a highly hydrophobic polypeptide that is resistant to enzyme cleavage during incubation in water solutions. We show here that the M1 protein that is immobilized on an insoluble activated support (thiopropyl Sepharose-6B) by means of a thiol-disulfide exchange reaction acquires sensitivity to trypsin. After tryptic digestion noncysteine-containing peptides of M1 were removed by washing the support, while cysteine-containing ones were detached from the support by reduction. As a result, 24 unique tryptic peptides of M1 protein were clearly separated by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The described method opens a new way to the investigation of functional properties of distinct domains of viral thiol proteins.

[Changes in intracardiac hemodynamics after percutaneous catheter balloon valvuloplasty in different types of valvular stenosis of the pulmonary artery].

Percutaneous catheter balloon valvuloplasty was carried out in 75 patients with valvular pulmonary stenosis (VPS), whose ages ranged from 18 months to 38 years. In 40 of them (53.3%) VPS was complicated by infundibular stenosis of the right ventricle. After percutaneous catheter balloon valvuloplasty 13 patients received out-patient treatment with beta-adrenergic blocking agents in doses of 20 to 120 mg/24 hours. Control examination in periods of 6 months to 2 years after the operation was conducted in 35 patients among whom 10 patients had been given beta-adrenergic blocking agents in the postoperative period. A stable reduction of the right ventricle-pulmonary artery (RV-PA) gradient and positive dynamics of the cardiac volume indices were recorded in 25 patients after correction of isolated VPS and in 6 patients after percutaneous catheter balloon valvuloplasty and treatment with beta-adrenergic blocking agents. The residual RV-PA gradient in 4 patients after treatment with beta-adrenergic blocking agents remained within a range of 30 mm Hg. Percutaneous catheter balloon valvuloplasty is an effective method for the correlation of isolated VPS. Coexistence of VPS with infundibular right-ventricular stenosis is not a contraindication for the use of this method for correcting the anomaly. In such a case the roentgenosurgical intervention should be supplemented by treatment with beta-adrenergic blocking agents in individual doses.

[Hemodynamic aspects of the transvenous electrodestruction of the atrioventricular junction].

Transvenous electrodestruction of the atrioventricular junction is an effective method of surgical treatment for supraventricular arrhythmias (paroxysmal tachysystoles) refractory to medication. However, it is central hemodynamic status alone that can be an objective indicator of favorable clinical effect. Major central hemodynamic parameters were examined in 52 patients before and after the operation. Considerable late postoperative improvement of the general condition and normalization of major central hemodynamic parameters were noted in most cases.

[Clinical use of transvenous electrodestruction of the atrioventricular junction in patients with supraventricular tachyarrhythmia].

The authors described 51 patients with different types of supraventricular tachyarrhythmias and ciliary arrhythmia paroxysms who showed resistance to drug therapy. All the patients were treated by the closed transvenous electrodestruction of the atrioventricular junction by producing a series of discharges with a defibrillator to the area of His' bundle, the power being 280-400 J. A stable and complete transversal blockade was obtained in 45 patients, in 6 patients the restoration of permeability in the atrioventricular system with frequent ventricular responses was observed, being the reason for repeated electrodestructions. No complications were observed. In the patients with blockade of the I-II degree tachycardia paroxysms either stopped or were milder and subjected to drug therapy. Biologically controlled electrocardiostimulators of the "demand" type were implanted to all patients after electrodestruction of the atrioventricular junction. Proceeding from the above the authors made a conclusion that the closed transvenous electrodestruction was a method of choice in the treatment of supraventricular tachyarrhythmias and ciliary arrhythmia paroxysms who showed resistance to drug therapy. It can be effectively used for seriously ill patients and elderly persons.

[Method of devising a muscle pump for assisted circulation].

The authors have proposed a model of the blood pump from the skeletal automuscles of the body for carrying out aortal counterpulsation under experimental conditions. The pump is run by means of direct electric stimulation of the muscle. Have demonstrated that it is possible in principle to design a completely implanted small system of aortal counterpulsation.

[Clinical evaluation of 2 new methods of non-invasive diagnosis of coronary insufficiency].

One-dimensional hyperplane was determined as capable of distinguishing between patients with coronary insufficiency and normal subjects by some parameters of bicycle ergometry. Twenty-four normal subjects and 159 anginal patients (males with normal blood pressure and normal body weight) were tested by bicycle ergometry. Test results were assessed individually with respect to changes in electrocardiographic repolarization complex, changes in R-wave amplitude, Robinson's index and the index of myocardial adaptation to exercise. All examined tests showed similar specificity. The myocardial adaptation index had significantly higher sensitivity as compared to other three indices.

[Morphology and biology of cystophorous cercariae from the Bering sea].

Three new species of cystophorous cercariae, Cercaria appendiculata Pelseneer, 1906, C. octocauda Tschubrik, 1952 and C. saccocaudata Tschubrik, 1966, are described from the gastropod Tectonatica clausa (Broderip et Sowerby). C. saccocaudata is a larva of trematodes of the genus Lecithaster. The development of parthenites of this species carries out within one summer season. Parthenites of C. appendiculata and C. octocauda are capable to survive unfavourable winter conditions and produce cercariae in the next summer. The above three species were found to eject cercariae through the ejaculatory tube which is an important adaptation of chemiurids to the infection of the second intermediate hosts.
