Total body replacement with iliac bone graft and metal plate stabilization in lower cervical spine.

15 patients presented with cervical spine dislocation and kyphotic spondylosis due to traumatic fracture and vertebral body tumour underwent surgical decompression and fixation via the anterior approach in one stage. Decompression was achieved by resection of the body of the vertebra while fixation meant implantation of iliac bone graft with metal plate fixation. Early reduction of the dislocation was impossible or insufficient in most of the cases. Therefore the majority of operations were "late decompression". Patients with root or partial cord lesions had the most significant improvement. In some selected cases, however, who suffered from a total cord lesion due to C6 or C7 fracture-dislocation, surgical decompression of the C7 and/or C8 roots by resection of the C6 or C7 vertebral bodies could lead to useful motor improvement in the hands and the fingers.

[Remarks to the operative treatment of arthritis of the knee (author's transl)].

Author deals with operative treatment in secondary arthritis following severe trauma of the knee. Review of operative techniques and their problemes are given. The results of and total prosthetic replacement are compared with those of arthrodesis. It is concluded that in order to obtain the best result in prevention of secondary arthritis exact reduction and stable fixation of the fracture should be performed.

The polarity of the sexes and its decline.

The polarity of the sexes is rooted in the genic sex. The qualities which constitute masculinity and femininity are psychobiological secondary (sex) characteristics. They are epigenetic phenomena evolved from the interaction of man's biological givens with the civilization. The polarity of the sexes changes in our civilization faster than before. The potential for psychological change is in the process of identification primarily of the infants of both sexes with the mother. Socioeconomic and cultural changes bear influence on the structure of the family and promote the equalization of the sexes.
