Tensile bond strength of a soft lining with acrylic denture base resins.

Bonding of different soft lining materials has been widely investigated, but there is little work on the effect of using different denture base resins. This study investigates the bonding of Molloplast-B (a heat-cured, silicone soft lining material) and five commercial acrylic denture base materials of different types (Pacton, Lucitone, Meliodent, Ivocap and Compresin). The lining was processed against all the resins cured and Pacton, Lucitone and Meliodent uncured. In the cured specimens, Lucitone, Meliodent and Compresin demonstrated cohesive failure, whereas Pacton and Ivocap demonstrated part-adhesive and part-cohesive failure. All three sets of uncured specimens demonstrated adhesive failure. It was concluded that pre-curing, roughening and treating with Primo adhesive gives a better bond.

The presence of black-pigmented gram-negative anaerobes in the oral cavity of edentulous subjects.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether black-pigmented Gram-negative anaerobes are part of the indigenous oral flora of edentulous subjects with or without dentures. Group I consisted of 11 subjects with dentures (mean age 63.6 years, range 52-75) and Group II consisted of 39 subjects with complete dentures in both jaws (mean age 59.3 years, range 37-80). Two microbial samples for microbiological examination were taken from each subject. One of them was from the dorsum of the tongue and the other was from saliva. Black-pigmented Gram-negative anaerobes > 10(7) cfu/ml were found in both samples. In 50 edentulous subjects, they were found more commonly from tongue (40%) than from saliva (26%). None of the subjects had Porphyromonas gingivalis. There was no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05) between the presence of black-pigmented Gram-negative anaerobes on tongue and in saliva in the two groups. Our results suggested that high levels of black-pigmented Gram-negative anaerobes may belong to the indigenous oral flora in edentulous mouths with or without dentures.

Relation between the birthweight and cord, maternal serum and amniotic fluid growth hormone levels.

Maternal and cord serum and amniotic fluid growth hormone (GH) levels were measured in 55 term pregnancies in order to evaluate the role of GH in prenatal fetal somatic growth. The study group consisted of patients who had small, large, and average for gestational age infants. The difference in mean maternal and cord serum and amniotic fluid GH levels between the three weight groups were found to be insignificant. It is concluded that GH does not influence fetal somatic growth.

A preliminary report on a study of serum alpha-1-antitrypsin and immunoglobulin levels in lepromatous leprosy.

IgG, IgA, and IgM immunoglobulins and alpha-1-antitrypsin globulin in sera from 30 patients with lepromatous leprosy were determined and compared with 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Mean levels of IgG, IgM, IgA, and alpha-1-antitrypsin were significantly elevated in the sera of lepromatous leprosy patients in comparison with levels found in normal subjects. Statistical analysis of the relationships between levels of alpha-1-antitrypsin and immunoglobulins in the sera of lepromatous leprosy patients and controls revealed no correlation. It is therefore concluded that factors responsible for concentrations of immunoglobulins and alpha-1-antitrypsin are independent of each other in patients with lepromatous leprosy.

Peritoneal tuberculosis with pelvic abdominal mass, ascites and elevated CA 125 mimicking advanced ovarian carcinoma: a series of 10 cases.

Ten patients with peritoneal tuberculosis who were operated on for suspected advanced ovarian cancer during a 5-year period were analyzed. These 10 cases constituted 1.4% of the 728 new gynecologic cancer cases diagnosed and treated at our department during the same time period. Data were obtained from patients' files and pathology reports. The mean age of cases was 40.6 +/- 6.1 (median 37; range 18-72). Ascites was present together with ill-defined nodularities or thickening in the Douglas pouch and/or in the adnexal areas on pelvic examination in all patients but three, who presented with well-demarcated adnexal masses of about 5 cm in diameter. All patients had elevated serum CA 125 levels with a median of 331 U/ml, (40-560 U/ml). Ultrasound and abdominopelvic CT examinations revealed omental and mesenteric thickening in addition to ascites in all patients, cystic ovarian masses or ovarian enlargement in five, and peritoneal implants in two. Abdominal paracentesis performed in the six cases in whom the findings were felt to be most inconclusive for the diagnosis of ovarian cancer revealed clear exudative fluid with benign cells. Mycobacteria could not be demonstrated on direct preparations. Tuberculosis was diagnosed at laparotomy in all. Patients received antituberculous therapy and serum CA 125 levels returned to normal within 2 months after the beginning of treatment. This case series demonstrates a high rate of misdiagnosis between advanced ovarian cancer and peritoneal tuberculosis. Whereas abdominal paracentesis is useless in ruling out peritoneal tuberculosis, and serum CA 125 levels are not helpful in the differential diagnosis, the latter marker may be useful in the follow-up of patients.

Primary psammocarcinoma of the peritoneum.

Psammocarcinoma is a rare type of serous carcinoma arising from the ovaries or the peritoneum. Histopathologically, it has large deposits of psammoma bodies, invasion to surrounding tissues, and low-grade cytologic atypia. Biologic behavior is similar to borderline serous tumors with a favorable survival time. Primary surgical debulking with complete resection of the tumor should be the main surgical approach, while the benefit of postoperative chemotherapy remains unknown. A new case of primary peritoneal psammocarcinoma with survival after an initial diagnosis of 5.5 years is presented with a literature review.

EEC syndrome (ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting): a clinical case report.

The EEC syndrome (ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia -clefting) is defined as a multiple congenital anomaly syndrome characterized by ectodermal dysplasia, distal limb anomaly, cleft lip/palate, and lacrimal duct anomalies. This case report reviews and presents clinical symptoms and treatment of the EEC syndrome.
