Secondary correction of traumatogenic enophthalmos with auto- and alloplastic implants.
In 23 patients with traumatogenic enophthalmos and diplopia autologous (rib cartilage, iliac crest bone), heterologous (lyophilized dura), and alloplastic (Silastic, P.D.S., HA-blocks) material was implanted into the orbit in a late secondary intervention. The results were encouraging as for the improvement of the diplopia as well as the enophthalmos. If rib cartilage should not or cannot be used a hydroxyapatite ceramic block is the best alloplastic implant material due to its stability, inertia, and availability.

The surgical correction of the injured nose. A follow up study of 243 cases in 12 years.
Due to its prominent position the nose is very often involved in facial traumas. Even minor injuries may cause major disturbances of form and function. Thus, a nasal injury should regularly be treated primarily. Planned secondary corrections are indicated only in rare exceptions.

[Anxiolysis vs. intravenous conscious sedation during maxillary fracture splinting in local anesthesia].
For the conservative treatment of mandibular fractures with arch bars under local anaesthesia we used two forms of premedication in 140 patients: 1. an analgetic sedation with pethidine 1 mg/kg body weight and promethazine 0.5 mg/kg body weight i.m. (n = 70 cases) 2. an anxiolytic sedation with midazolam 0.05-0.1 mg/kg body weight i.v. (n = 70 cases). The effect of the premedication was measured retrospectively by the mean amount of local anaesthetics used during splinting. It could be noted that the mean consumption of local anaesthetics was significantly lower in the midazolam-group than in the pethidine/promethazine-group. The postoperative subjective assessment of the operation by the patients is better under anxiolytic than under analgetic sedation, too.

[Autologous blood transfusion in elective mouth, jaw, and facial surgery. Experience with 53 patients].
From June 1987 to July 1989 53 patients with elective operations donated their own blood for a later possible retransfusion. Although autologous transfusion was time-consuming nearly all patients accepted this method because they received the safest of all possible transfusions. So preoperative psychological anxieties could be reduced and the decision for the operation was made easier.

[Autologous blood transfusion in elective operations. Procedures with 102 blood retransfusion cases].
Since June 1987 a total of 102 patients undergoing elective operations have donated autologous blood for a later possible retransfusion. Although autologous transfusion was time-consuming, nearly all patients accepted this method because they received the safest of all possible transfusions. This way, preoperative psychological anxieties could be reduced and it was made easier for the patients to decide in favor of the operation. Severe somatic pains caused by blood donation were not observed.
