Bacteriophage typing scheme for Salmonella infantis.

A bacteriophage typing system is described for Salmonella infantis. Nine phages were selected, of which three were isolated from sewage and six from human feces. All except 7 of the 546 strains collected between 1974 and 1978 could be classified into 23 different phage types. The five most common phage types comprised 26, 13, 9, 9, and 9% of all strains, respectively. Strains from humans, animals, food, and water isolated during nine episodes, or from given patients at different intervals of time, belonged to the same phage type.

[An automatic bacteriophage distributor (author's transl)].

The apparatus described in this article can distribute simultaneously 22 drops of different phage suspensions at a rate of 13,200 drops per hour, which is superior than the one obtained with the presently available apparatuses. It could eventually be attached to a Petri dish distributor.

Yersinia enterocolitica: serotypes and biotypes isolated from humans and the environment in Quebec, Canada.

Thirty-one strains of Yersinia enterocolitica were isolated from food and surface water. During the period of January 1975 to June 1977, 157 strains from 143 human cases were also isolated. Among the different serotypes from nonhuman sources, serotypes 6,30 and 4,32 were the most common. Serotype 4,32 was present only in food and not in water. Serotype 3 was isolated only from humans. Among the different serotypes from human cases, 73.9% belonged to serotype 3. Only serotype 3 was isolated from children under 4 years old. The presence of other serotypes increased and that of serotype 3 decreased in frequency as the age progressed. No serotype 3 was isolated from human cases aged 50 years and more.

Phage typing scheme for group D streptococci isolated from human urogenital tract.

Streptococci of Lancefield group D were isolated from 52.2% of pharyngeal, 55.5% of urethral, 56.6% of endocervical, and 75.4% of ano-rectal specimens. Seventeen phages isolated from sewage and urogenital specimens were selected for phage typing. Four of these lysed only the strains of Streptococcus faecalis and its variety liquefaciens. Another six phages lysed only the strains of Streptococcus faecium and its variety durans. With the help of seven bacteriophages, 346 of 384 (90.1%) strains of S. faecalis and its variety liquefaciens could be classified into 27 types. Similarly, with the help of 10 other bacteriophages, 97 of 117 (82.9%) strains of S. faecium and its variety durans could be grouped into 22 types. In 72 of 87 (82.7%) cases, similar phage types were obtained at different culture sites of the same individual.

A large new Streptococcus bacteriophage.

Phage VD13 possesses a large, elongated head and a long, non-contractile tail. It is active on group D streptococci and contains double-stranded DNA. The phage produces several rare kinds of head malformations, notably polymorphic mottled structures and giant heads which probably contain DNA.
