Bicarbonate transport by rabbit cortical collecting tubules. Effect of acid and alkali loads in vivo on transport in vitro.

Rabbit cortical collecting tubules were perfused in vitro to investigate the control of bicarbonate transport. Bicarbonate was measured by microcalorimetry as total CO2. The perfusate and bath were identical solutions containing 25 mM bicarbonate at pH 7.4. The mean pH of the urine in the bladders of untreated rabbits at the time they were killed was 7.4. Their individual tubules, studied in vitro, either absorbed or secreted bicarbonate, and, combining the results, there was on the average no significant net transport. When the rabbits were treated with NH4Cl the day before the experiment, their urine was acidic and their tubules studied in vitro absorbed bicarbonate (i.e., there was net lumen-to-bath transport). In contrast, when the rabbits were treated with NaHCO3, their urine was significantly more alkaline, and their tubules studied in vitro generally secreted bicarbonate (i.e., net bath-to-lumen transport). Thus, the direction of bicarbonate transport by cortical collecting tubules studied under standard conditions in vitro correlated with the urine pH and was determined by the preceding treatment of the animals in vivo with acidifying or alkalinizing salts. These results demonstrate a previously unrecognized mechanism which contributes to the control of urinary bicarbonate excretion.

Pineal influence on intermale aggression in adult house mice.

Previously isolated, adult male mice of a wild-derived strain were sham-operated or pinealectomized (pinx) and 14 days later were paired for 15 min, then grouped three per cage for 7 days. During 15 min pairings, mean latency to initiation of fighting was increased twofold and duration of fighting was reduced 35 to 41 percent in pairs comprised of one or both pinx animals. Although pinealectomy failed to influence which pair member initiated fighting, sham males were ranked as dominant in 75 percent of sham-pinx pairs. Pinealectomy reduced adrenal gland weights among isolated animals and increased in general the effects of social subordination in grouped males. Compared to sham subordinates, pinx subordinates experienced adrenal enlargment and twofold greater wounding and had lighter thymus glands and final body weights. Additionally, however, pinealectomy prevented atrophy of seminal vesicles among subordinates. Thus, present results suggest a role of the pineal gland in influencing intermale aggression and linking social stimuli with testis dysfunction in adult house mice.

Dialysis encephalopathy: a review.

Dialysis encephalopathy (DE) is a distinct neuropsychiatric syndrome typically occurring in patients undergoing longterm hemodialysis. It is characterized by electroencephalographic abnormalities in association with disturbances of speech, cognition, movement, affect, or behavior. Previously thought to be relentlessly progressive, recent evidence linking the illness to aluminum overload has led to advances in prevention and treatment. Early diagnosis aids in the reversal or amelioration of the syndrome and can be of immense value to the patient, the family and involved health personnel. The general features of the syndrome, etiologic considerations, differential diagnosis and treatment are discussed. Three case studies are included to illustrate salient features of the syndrome.
