Salmonella enteritidis in Argentina.

A significant increase in the number of isolations of Salmonella enteritidis has been observed in Argentina since 1986. Outbreaks of foodborne diseases in humans were associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked hens' eggs. Between 1986 and the first 6 months of 1993 there were 150 outbreaks reported, affecting more than 6000 persons. A total of 71.3% of these outbreaks were confirmed by stool cultures, and 47.3% by bacteriological study of the food implicated in the outbreak. A permanent surveillance of salmonellosis is imperative, taking into account the persistence of Salmonella enteritidis isolations in sporadic cases and in new outbreaks.

[Virulence and enterotoxigenicity of Yersinia enterocolitica isolated from foods and other biological material].

Enterotoxigenicity, virulence and antimicrobial susceptibility were studied in thirteen strains of Yersinia enterocolitica isolated from meat foods and organs of slaughtered animals. The following biotypes (B), serotypes (O) and lisotypes (Lis) were studied: B2, O:9, Lis X3 and B1, O:7,8, Lis Xo (from thick fresh sausages); B1, O:5, Lis Xz (from slender sausages); B1, O:5, Lis Xz and B2, O:9, Lis X3 (from bovine tongues); B1, O:6, Lis Xz (from porcine tongues) and B1, O:6, Lis Xz (from porcine caeca) (Table 1). Virulence was determined by i) the autoagglutination test (Laird and Cavanaugh), replacing in the Eagle medium amino acids and vitamins with proteose peptone (1%), tryptone (1%) and yeast extract (0.5%), and ii) the calcium dependency test. The LD50 of five strains was determined by i.p. injection of O.5 ml of cell suspensions into white mice and estimated by the Spearman Kärber method. LD50 varied from 2 x 10(9) to 7 x 10(9) viable cells per ml. The enterotoxigenicity test was carried out in suckling white mice and the invasiveness test (Sereny) in adult white mice. Two strains showed autoagglutination, five calcium dependency, two were invasive and eight produced enterotoxin. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assayed by the modified Kirby and Bauer test. All the strains were susceptible to kanamycin, amikacin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, chloramphenicol, fosfomycin, mezlocillin, nitrofurantoin, piperacillin, piperimidic acid, polymyxin B, sisomycin and tobramycin, and resistant to cephalotoxin, ampicillin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Isolation of new serovars of Salmonella in streams of water].

The present work is the final stage of a research to determine the causes and degree of pollution of the Zaiman creek waters, which flow through the Capital District of Misiones, Argentina. The research was focused on the presence of Salmonella serovars in samples collected from 2 stream sites equidistant from a cold storage plant and slaughterhouse, one downstream, and the other before the source of pollution. Elevated temperature technique for the isolation of Salmonella was applied. The methodology consisted in applying an enrichment procedure for waterborne pathogens, performed by incubating after a convenient exposure period, gauze swabs in Dulcitol Selenite and Tetrationate (with the addition of 0,001% brilliant green) broths. Salmonella organisms were recovered by streaking duplicate plates of E.M.B Agar (Eosin Methylene Blue), B.P.L.S Agar (Brilliant Green Agar) and Bismuth Sulphite Agar. Best results were obtained when Bulcitol Selenite broth and Bismuth Sulphite Agar were used. (Tables 1, 2, 3). Suspected colonies were classified by 10 biochemical reactions, and further verified by serological identification. So far, 716 suspected colonies have been studied. Salmonella was isolated from 76% of the samples and 22 serovars were identified (Table 3). Isolating frequency of serovars during 1981-1984 is shown (Table 4). S. saphra prevailed among the studied samples, while both S. anatum and S. newport ranked second.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Yersinia enterocolitica: 1st isolation from meat products in Argentina].

A search for Y. enterocolitica in fresh foods of animal origin has been carried out. Isolations were obtained from "chorizos" (thick fresh sausages), "salchichas" (slender fresh sausages), bovine and pig's tongues and caecum (Tables 1, 2). Enrichments were performed in saline phosphate buffer 0.067 M, pH 7.6 and nutrient broth with 0.5% glucose. Caecum and tongue samples were postenriched in 0.5% KOH. Subcultures were done in Salmonella-Shigella agar, MacConkey agar and eosin-methylene blue agar. Isolates were identified through biochemical, serological and lysotyping methods. The following biotypes (B), serotypes (O) and lysotypes (Lis) were isolated: from "chorizos", B2, 0:9, Lis X3 and B1, 0:7,8, Lis Xo. From "salchichas", B1, 0:5, Lis Xz. From bovine tongues, B1, 0:5, Lis Xz and B2, 0:9, Lis X3. From pig tongues, B1, 0:6, Lis Xz. From pig caecum, B1, 0:6, Lis Xz and B1, 0:5, Lis Xz. Serotype B2, 0:9, Lis X3 isolated from "chorizos" and bovine tongues has been only exceptionally found outside of human beings. Serotype B1, 0:6, Liz Xz was isolated from the tongue and caecum of one pig. From the caecum of another pig two serotypes, B1, 0:5, Liz Xz and B1, 0:6, Liz Xz, were isolated. In order to determine the importance of Y. entercolitica as etiologic agent of yersiniosis in Argentina, further studies on the frequency and distribution of this agent are recommended.

[Serotypes of Salmonella in the Republic of Argentina isolated from human and non-human sources, 1979-1981].

A total of 49 serotypes were isolated in Argentina during the triennium 1979-1981, from 3,665 Salmonella strains isolated from different sources: human, animal, food and water. The degree of correlation among every one of them was analyzed in order to establish their influence in the cycles of transmission and human infection. S. typhimurium prevailed in human materials, being also isolated from water and animal, although in a smaller degree. Something similar occurred with S. oranienburg. It was observed that S. typhi retained its usual feature of endemic disease. Other serotypes of Salmonella were also found, particularly: S. paratyphi, S. panama, S. derby, S. agona, S. bredeney, S. newport, S. anatum and S. montevideo. From 3,665 Salmonella strains studied, 73.73% were isolated from human sources and the other 26.27% from non human sources, 5.40% corresponding to animal isolations, 15.39% from water and 5.48% from food.

[Salmonella: its incidence in waters of the Zaimán arroyo].

The present work is the initial stage of a project to determine the causes and degree of pollution of the Zaiman creek waters, which flow through wide suburban areas of Posadas, Argentina. The research was focused on the presence of Salmonella serotypes, pathogenic microorganisms probably responsible for most waterborne disease outbreaks. In addition, the N.M.P./100 ml (Most Probable Number) of total coliform organisms was determined in samples collected from points near cold storage plant and slaughterhouse, both to show the pollution effect of industrial discharges. So far, 35 sampling operations have been carried out in representative geographic points. The methodology for Salmonella consisted in applying concentration technics for waterborne pathogens, followed by an enrichment procedure performed by incubating samples in Dulcitol Selenite and Tetrathionate (Muller-Kauffman) broths at 41.5 degrees C during 25 hours. Typical, well-isolated Salmonella-like colonies were obtained by streaking duplicate plates of E.M.B. Agar (Eosin Methylene Blue), Brilliant Green Agar and Bismuth Sulphite Agar. Suspected colonies were classified by 10 biochemical reactions and further verified by serological identification, performed at the National Institute of Microbiology "Carlos Malbrán". The methodology followed for the determination of total coliforms was the one described in the American Water Standards. Salmonella serotypes were isolated in 46% of the examined samples. Isolation efficiency of culture media is shown. First isolations of Salmonella abaetetuba and S. saphra are reported. Most serotypes were isolated from sampling points down-stream from the industrial plant. Zaimán creek waters were classified as No 4 of W.H.O (World Health Organization) stream waters classification, except during heavy rain periods in which they ranked as No 3.

[Annual distribution of serotypes of Salmonella, Shigella, and infantile enteropathogenic Escherichia coli in the Republic of Argentina, 1979-1981].

We report data of isolation of 3,665 strains of Salmonella, 1,855 of Shigella and 697 of E. coli infantile enteropathogenic (EPI) from different sources: human, animal, food and water, in Argentina during the triennium 1979-1981, considering their importance in the chain of transmission of enterobacteria. It appears that S. typhimurium is the most common among all the isolated serotypes of Salmonella, following in order of importance, S. oranienburg, S. derby, S. panama, S. agona, S. anatum, S. newport, S. bredeney and S. montevideo. It is important to emphasize the appearance of new Shigella serotypes in Argentina, particularly Sh. dysenteriae 2. We found that E. coli EPI 0111:B4 was the most frequent serotype and in 1981 the serotype 0112:B13 was also found.

Identification of enteropathogens in infantile diarrhea in a study performed in the city of Posadas, Misiones, República Argentina.

The following work informs of the results of isolation, frequency and distribution of enteropathogens in children under five years old, without previous antibiotic treatment, less than seven days with diarrhoea, ambulatory or in Hospital "Dr. Ramón Madariaga" de Posadas, Misiones, República Argentina, from June 1986 to May 1989. From a total of 972 children with diarrhoea, 78% required to be hospitalized. The greatest number of cases were found during spring and summer in children from 1 to 11 months of age. Distribution of the main enteropathogens was: enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) (29.4%), parasites (22%), Shigella (16.3%), enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) (14%) and rotavirus (12.9%). Highest incidence of rotavirus was registered in the coldest months and Shigella, ETEC, Salmonella and parasites in the warm months. The group of most affected children were from 1 to 11 months of age, with higher incidence of EPEC, Salmonella and rotavirus, and parasites were found in older children. ETEC and Shigella had no relationship with the age of children. The most frequent association was EPEC with rotavirus. This is the first finding of Salmonella zaiman in humans and of Salmonella hadar in Argentina. Cryptosporidium, etiological agent of serious diarrhoea in the immunocompetent, was isolated in 3.9% of our cases.

[Yersinia enterocolitica strains of bovine origin isolated in San Luis, Argentina: virulence, enterotoxigenicity, and antibiotic sensitivity].

Eleven Yersinia enterocolitica strains isolated from bovine tongues and classified as B1 0:5 Lis Xz (8), B2 0:9 Lis X3 (2), nontypable (1), were examined for the following virulence-associated characteristics: autoagglutination, calcium dependency, Sereny test, congo red binding and presence of 40-48 MDa plasmids. Heat-stable enterotoxin production was also determined. Antibiotic susceptibility was assayed according to the modified Bauer-Kirby's method. Two Y. enterocolitica B1 0:5 Lis Xz strains were positive for autoagglutination, calcium dependency and congo red binding; both exhibited nearly 40 MDa plasmids and one of them was enterotoxigenic. The other strains did not carry virulence-associated plasmids, 5 were congo red positive and 4 produced enterotoxin. Therefore, two B1 0:5 Lis Xz strains would be potentially virulent. All strains were susceptible to piperacillin, mezlocillin, cefuroxime, cefotaxime, amikacin, kanamycin, sisomicin, phosphomycin , chloramphenicol, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and pipemidic acid. Ampicillin and sulfisoxazole proved to be less efficient.

[Bacteria of the genus Yersinia in chickens for human consumption and in balanced bird food].

Yersinia was investigated in 50 skin samples of chicken carcasses from retail shops and 65 samples of balanced food for domestic fowl. Enrichments were performed in saline phosphate buffer 0.067 M, pH 7.6 and post-enriched in 0.5% KOH. Subcultures were performed in Salmonella-Shigella agar and MacConkey agar. Isolates were identified through biochemical, serological and lysotyping methods. The following biovar (B), serovar (O) and phagovar (Lis) were isolated from chickens: Y. enterocolitica (five strains) B:1:O:6,47;Lis Xz; B:1;O:6:Lis Xz; B:1:O:5,Lis Xz; Y.intermedia (two strains) B:1;O:52;Lis Xz; B:1;O:52,53,54;Lis Xz (NRA, nitrate reductase type A); Y. frederiksenii (two strains) O:10,K1,25,35,38,46:Lis Xz; (citrate): O:10,K1,25,35,38,46:Lis Xz (ONPG-: citrate +); Y. kristensenii (one strain) does not agglutinate; Lis Xo. Yersinia were not isolated from balanced food for domestic fowl. Virulence tests (calcium dependency and autoagglutination at 37 degrees C) were negative in all instances. It is concluded from this study that Yersinia isolated from chickens are without pathogenic importance.

[Significance of Salmonella enteritidis in outbreaks of diseases transmitted by foods in Argentina, 1986-1988].

This paper reports on the outbreaks of food-borne-diseases due to Salmonella Enteritidis which occurred in Argentina between 1986 and 1988. In 39 registered episodes 210 strains were isolated from human feces (28 outbreaks) and 59 from food (23 outbreaks). More than 2,500 people in different provinces were affected, the chief characteristics of the clinical picture being the gravity of the symptoms (high temperature, vomiting, diarrhea and severe dehydration). The main source of infection was related to raw eggs, eaten in the form of home-made mayonnaise. It is considered necessary to carry out an effective control of poultry products, as well as a permanent surveillance of salmonellosis.

[Comparative study of 4 methods for isolating Salmonella from surface waters].

The study presented here is the first stage of a project designed to determine the presence of Salmonella serotypes in Lujan river waters, which flow beside the urban area of the homonymous city, in the province of Buenos Aires. It consisted in a comparative study of four methods for Salmonellae detection in 200 samples: Tetrathionate-brilliant green; mannitol-selenite; Rappaport 25 and modified Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth, each of them with and without pre-enrichment in buffered peptone water. The submerged gauze technique was applied to the sampling in three different spots of the river: at the town center, two km water above, and two down-stream from the city. Best results were obtained when modified Rappaport-Vassiliadis enrichment broth and brilliant green agar with 0.25% of sodium deoxycholate were used, after pre-enrichment of the samples in buffered peptone water. Salmonella were isolated from 46% of the samples studied, and 16 serotypes were identified: S. Typhimurium, S. Enteritidis, S. Infantis, S. Mbandaka, S. Israel and S. Subspecies IV 18 z36: z38:-, among them.

[Isolation of Vibrio cholerae non 01 from sewage in Argentina].

The Vibrio cholerae non 01 closely related to the classic choleric vibrio epidemic has acquired worldwide importance during the last decade, with outbreaks of diarrheas, septicemia and other disorders in humans and animals. Contaminated food and water and also liquids from sewers offer important steps in the transmission chain. Its isolation in the Atlantic and Pacific coast has led us to investigate its presence in our country, using sewage for the first study. We isolated for the first time in Argentina 27 strains of Vibrio cholerae non 01 from samples taken in the district of Berisso which discharges its waters into the River Plate.
