We report on the early and late complications after hernia repair in this retrospective study. Over a period of five years, 920 adult men underwent Bassini-Kirschner repair for inguinal hernia as first operation. There occurred six hematomas (0.6%), 11 seromas (1.2%) and 10 wound infections (1.0%). There were no deaths. 781 patients were controlled after two to seven years. We found recurrence of inguinal hernia in 15 cases (1.9%), chronic inguinal pain in 29 cases (3.7%), testicular atrophy in two cases (0.2%).
During a 7-year period 686 adult male patients underwent Bassini-Kirschner operations for inguinal hernia. All patients received prophylactic physical therapy preoperatively, they were given elastic stockings and low-dose heparin therapy and all were ambulated on the first postoperative day. We used Mersilene for all sutures in 179 patients, Mersilene for the Bassini sutures and Dexon for the Kirschner sutures in 215 patients, sole Dexon sutures in 292 patients. Early and late complications occurred most frequently with nonresorbable (Mersilene) materials, less frequently with Dexon. We encountered recurrent inguinal hernias in 23 patients (4,7%). Review of relevant references indicates a recurrence rate of 2,6 to 14,8% with other methods.
74 children suffering from different types of supracondylar fractures of the upper arm underwent conservative and 32 surgical treatment. The follow-up took place 2 to 9 years after the accident. In a percentage of 98 there were very good results of conservative treatment, only 2% were satisfactory.--In the surgically treated group (19 children were followed up) the results were excellent till good in 15 cases, satisfactory in 3 cases and bad in one case.
2 cases of peritonitis fibroplastica with obscure genesis and atypical complaints were operated on. Pseudomembranes were carefully cleared away from the intestine. The first patient has been cured after two years, the other died of another disease.
