Function after lower limb amputation.

Functional ability and social dependence were investigated by personal interview of 107 lower limb amputees surviving 1-5 years postoperatively. Among eight independent variables studied by multiple regression analysis, increased age was associated unfavorably with physical ability and social dependence. Independence from social provisions preoperatively showed favorable relationships with functional capacity and postoperative dependence. Above-knee or bilateral amputation and postoperative pain were associated with reduced functional ability, but not with social dependence. No significant association was found with cause of operation or sex of the amputees. The importance of proper prosthetic fitting and pain control is emphasized.

[The effect of domperidone and metoclopramide on antral motility (author's transl)].

The effect of domperidone and metoclopramide on antral motility was studied by measuring the intraluminal pressure in the antrum of 10 normal persons and of 8 patients suffering from duodenal ulcer. Both drugs stimulated the rhythmic activity of the antrum. The antiemetic effect and the therapeutic effect of domperidone on complaints by gastrointestinal retention was the result of the influence on gastrointestinal motility, which is similar to that of metoclopramide.

Preliminary experience with 15 (S) 15-methyl prostaglandin F2 alpha for midtrimester abortion.

Twenty-six women received intramuscular or intra-amniotic 15 (S) 15-methyl prostaglandin F2 alpha to induce midtrimester abortion. The median initial injection-abortion interval was 10 hours and 25 minutes. The advantages of intramuscular analogue are somnolence and reduced discomfort during labor. Disadvantages include severe gastrointestinal toxicity in the majority of patients and symptoms of acute respiratory distress in two patients.

The electrical dynamics of laparoscopic sterilization.

The minimum voltage needed to perform laparoscopic sterilization was studied to learn more about prevention of bowel burns. Using a "CUT" waveform at very low levels, it is practical to coagulate fallopian tubes with as little as 100 volts peak. If electrosurgical cutting of fulguration (charring) is desired, the nimimum voltage is about 700 volts peak. The changes in electrical resistance of tissue were measured during coagulation of sample tissues and actual sterilizations. A discussion of basic electrosurgical principles is included.
