The authors have developed a multidirectional tomographic unit to obtain sagittal images with the patient in the supine or prone position. The apparatus is particularly useful for examination of the vertebral column and sella turcica. It can be employed in circular (0 degrees -40 degrees) and spiral (10 degrees -32 degrees) motions. The apparatus provides correct and easy positioning of subjects with easy maintenance of posture. It reduces the distortional effects of respiration and thereby markedly improves reproducibility.
A 67-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with chest pain and dyspnea which occurred suddenly after vomiting. She was well until admission except for cholelithiasis and hypertension which had been pointed out 3 years earlier. Arterial blood gas analysis showed hypoxemia without hypercapnea. Chest X-ray examination on admission revealed intra-mediastinal air with a niveau behind the heart which compressed the vasculature of the left lower lobe and a small amount of air in the regions adjacent to the trachea, left main bronchus and aortic arch. The serial chest radiographs showed pneumomediastinum, subcutaneous emphysema, pneumothorax and pleural effusion in that order within 16 hours after the onset. The diagnosis of esophageal rupture was made by CT scan of the chest performed after oral administration of Gastrografin, which demonstrated extravasation of contrast medium into the mediastinum. Surgical treatment including eversion stripping and esophagogastrostomy was performed 23 hours after the onset. Pathological examination of the removed specimens revealed a rupture of the lower portion of the esophagus originated in the gastric ulcer of the cardia. In spite of intensive care, she died 45 days after surgery because of renal failure. It was considered that the most important point in the early diagnosis of esophageal rupture was to suspect this disease based on the gastric symptoms followed by the respiratory symptoms and to demonstrate pneumomediastinum in chest X-ray. Chest CT scan performed after the oral administration of contrast medium could be an useful and non-invasive diagnostic procedure.
We examined the expressions of both c-myc and MDR1 in four samples isolated from a CML-bc patient in series during the clinical course. A 46-year-old man was diagnosed as chronic phase of CML in june 1985. In February 1987, the diagnosis of blastic transformation was made because of marked increase of blastic cells. He was initially treated with vincristine (V) and prednisolone (P) successfully. However, the effect of VP therapy was gradually attenuated, so that combined chemotherapies including anthracyclines were started. After the treatments of several courses, tumor cells acquired the refractory to both vincristine and adriamycin . He died in January, 1988. Northern blot hybridization studies revealed no expression of MDR1 mRNAs. However, the expression of c-myc was increased in the latest sample. These findings suggest that the expression of c-myc mRNA in tumor cells of this case reflects one characteristic of clinically refractory states to chemotherapies.

A series of experiments with male rats clearly demonstrated the hypocholesterolemic activity of dietary chitosan. On feeding a high cholesterol diet for 20 days, addition of 2 to 5% chitosan resulted in a significant reduction, by 25 to 30%, of plasma cholesterol without influencing food intake and growth. The concentration of liver cholesterol and triglyceride also decreased significantly. Plasma, but not liver cholesterol-lowering effect, was roughly comparable with that of cholestyramine. Chitosan at the 10% level further reduced plasma cholesterol, but depressed growth. Also, finer chitosan particles tended to restrain growth even at the 2% level. In rats fed a cholesterol-free diet containing 0.5% chitosan for 81 days, the concentration of serum cholesterol was the same with that of the corresponding control, but relatively more cholesterol existed as high-density lipiproteins and less as very low-density lipoproteins. Dietary chitosan increased fecal excretion of cholesterol, both exogenous and endogenous, while that of bile acids remained unchanged. There was no constipation or diarrhea. A proper supplementation of chitosan to the diet seemed to be effective in lowering plasma cholesterol.
Elevations of serum lipid peroxide levels were demonstrated in mice after an equitoxic dose of doxorubicin. When BDF1 mice were injected with doxorubicin (20 mg/kg body weight, IP), lipid peroxide levels in sera were elevated 1 day after the injection and the levels declined on subsequent days. 5-Fluorouracil (400 mg/kg body weight, IP) never changed the peroxide levels in serum. Furthermore, it was found that the co-administration of [dl]-alpha-tocopheryl acetate or coenzyme Q10 IM strongly inhibited the doxorubicin-induced elevation of lipid peroxides in serum. The effectiveness of [dl]-alpha-tocopheryl acetate or coenzyme Q10 in reducing the lethality of doxorubicin in mice was also confirmed. These results indicate that the measurement of serum 2-thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances provided a useful measurement of lipid peroxide levels, which may be involved in some way with doxorubicin toxicity, and that the administration of antioxidants provide protection against some of the side effects of doxorubicin.

We measured the characteristic curve, modulation transfer function (MTF), and the Wiener spectrum of a commercially available computed radiographic (CR) system with photostimulable phosphor plate (imaging plate, IP). The characteristic curve (system response) obtained by an inverse-square x-ray sensitometry showed a wide dynamic range (order of 10(3) in maximum). The slit technique was employed to determine the MTF's, such as IP MTF, presampling MTF including the unsharpness of the detector (IP) and the blurring effect of the sampling aperture, and laser-printer MTF. It was found that the MTF of the standard type of IP was comparable to that of medium-speed screen/film systems. The noticeable degradation of resolution in our CR system, however, occurred at the stage of image data sampling: the presampling MTF was inferior to the IP MTF due to the effect of the scattering and resultant spreading of the incidence laser beam and the emitted luminescence. The noise was characterized by means of digital Wiener spectrum using uniformly exposed noise data. Exposure ranges could be separated into different sections depending upon the noise sources, such as quantum mottle at low exposure and system structure noise at high exposure.
