[The auditory perception of frequency-localized acoustic on-events].

The quick changing of amplitude envelope (amplitude modulation) is the inherent properties of speech signals. They are analyzed by the auditory system and are reflected in the auditory sensation as a sequences of some "events", that participate in creating of phonetic images. The dynamics of frequency distribution of events is considered to be used by listeners as a determinants of some consonants. However, this supposition are inconsistent with the psychoacoustics experiments showed that listeners can't determine the frequency of amplitude irregularities of tonal components. Current work consists of the discussion of this problem and results of experiments where the perception of an amplitude jumps in different frequency format area was studied using the synthetic quasi--syllable. The results obtained give evidence that the phoneme interpretations "know" the frequency of amplitude irregularieties.

[The perception of the tone and noise quality of a sound signal].

Perception of tonalness and noisiness of tonal complexes with flat amplitude spectrum, was studied. The variable parameters involve: bandwidth, spacing of components, position on the frequency axis, and the depth of the amplitude modulation. The findings suggest that the tonalness and noisiness perception depends on a periodicity ad spectral processing.

[The role of amplitude modulation in forming the auditory images of speech signals].

The identification of stationary vowels in influenced by the change in relations of formant amplitudes as if their "centre gravity" is used in phoneme decision. That is valid for formants spaced in critical frequency band equal approximately 3.5 Bark. The hypothesis about large-scale spectral integration in auditory system is based on this effect. The data obtained supports the hypothesis in respect to non-stationary sounds, too. Imitation of the large-scale spectral integration on the model of auditory processing suggests that the frequency band of the integration may be equal to 3.5 Bark.

[Phenomenon of the accumulation of spectral information in vowel-like stimulus].

Studies have been made on the perception of vowel-like stimuli formed by interchange of impulses with various form of the spectrum following with a period of 14 ms. Application of similar stimuli in earlier investigations revealed a phenomenon of accumulation of spectral information during the interval within a stimulus and allowed to reject a hypothesis of averaging directly the auditory dynamic spectrum. In the first part of investigation, we checked and did not confirm a hypothesis of screening from the bulk of the accumulated data of those spectral configurations which are distinctly different from natural vowels. In the second part of investigation, new results were obtained which are predicted by the hypothesis of average meanings of vowel traits (calculated from impulse spectra) and which contradict the hypothesis of current phonemic discrimination with accumulation of the obtained values of similarity of the spectrum with phonemic standards.
