Tongue piercing has many associated risks. This is a case report of a patient who, to avoid parental disapproval, hid the dorsal aspect of a lingual stud device. Subsequently, the dorsum repaired. The device could no longer be removed manually and warranted surgical removal. Despite being in situ for over two years, no further complications arose, but all efforts to obtain patient agreement for removal of the device failed.
Dental ankylosis may be a significant complication in orthodontic clinical practice. This case report describes the management of a malocclusion, complicated by an ankylosed maxillary central incisor, which arose during orthodontic treatment, following an acute traumatic injury. The use of the ankylosed incisor in successfully managing the significant Class II division 1 malocclusion is described.

Late lower incisor crowding and incisor rotations remain a problem in orthodontics. We describe a new fixed retainer which is simple to use, allows physiological tooth movement, but prevents rotational and labio-lingual relapse.
The Orthodontic records of 3,056 patients attending a Regional Orthodontic Unit were examined, to assess the prevalence of hypodontia. Orthopantomogram radiographs were available for all patients. The congenital absence of third molars was not considered. The prevalence of hypodontia was 11.3% which was high in comparison with previous studies. However it was in keeping with more recent studies from the U.K. and Ireland.
