Stabilized phosphogypsum: class C fly ash: Portland type II cement composites for potential marine application.

Phosphogypsum (PG, CaSO4 x H20), a byproduct of phosphoric acid manufacturing, contains low levels of Ra226. PG can be stabilized with portland type II cement and class C fly ash for use in marine environments, thus eliminating the airborne vector of transmission for radon gas. An augmented simplex centroid design with pseudocomponents was used to select 10 PG:class C fly ash:portland type II cement compositions. The 43 cm3 blocks were fabricated and subjected to a 1.5-yr field submergence test and a 28-d saltwater dynamic leaching study. All field composites survived with no signs of degradation. Dynamic leaching resulted in effective calcium diffusion coefficients ranging from 0.21 to 7.5 x 10(-14)m2 s(-1). Effective diffusion depths, calculated for t=1 and 30 yr, ranged from 0.4 to 2.2 mm and from 2.0 to 11.9 mm, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy and wavelength dispersive microprobe and X-ray diffraction analyses of the leached composites identified a 40-60-microm calcite layer that was absent in the control composites. This suggests that a reaction between the composites and the saltwater results in the precipitation of calcite onto the block surface, encapsulating the composites and protecting them from saltwater attack and dissolution.

Glucocorticoid inhibition of neuropathic limb edema and cutaneous neurogenic extravasation.

Sciatic nerve section in rats evokes chronic limb edema, pain behavior, and hindpaw hyperalgesia, a syndrome resembling the complex regional pain syndrome type II (CRPS II or causalgia) in man. Glucocorticoids such as methylprednisolone (MP) have been used as analgesic and anti-edematous agents in patients suffering from CRPS, and interestingly these therapeutic effects appear to persist in some patients after stopping the medication. Similar to the CRPS clinical response to glucocorticoids, we now demonstrate that chronic hindpaw edema in the sciatic transection CRPS model is reversed by a continuous infusion of MP (3 mg/kg/day over 21 days), and this anti-edematous effect persists for at least 1 week after discontinuing MP. Furthermore, there is a chronic increase in spontaneous protein extravasation in the hindpaw skin of rats after sciatic transection, similar to the increased protein extravasation observed in the edematous hands of CRPS patients. A 2-week infusion of MP (3 mg/kg/day) reduced spontaneous protein extravasation in the hindpaw skin by 80%. We postulated that increased spontaneous neurogenic extravasation resulted in development of limb edema in both the animal model and the CRPS patient, and that the anti-edematous effects of MP are due to an inhibition of spontaneous extravasation. Additional experiments examined the inhibitory effects of MP infusion on electrically-evoked neurogenic extravasation in the hindpaw skin of normal rats. MP inhibition was dose- and time-dependent, with an ED(50) of 1.2 mg/kg/day for a 14-day continuous infusion of MP, and a maximum inhibitory effect requiring 17 days of MP infusion (3 mg/kg/day). MP (3 mg/kg/day for 14 days) also blocked both capsaicin- and SP-evoked neurogenic extravasation, indicating a post-junctional inhibitory effect. Our interpretation is that increased spontaneous neurogenic extravasation in this CRPS model contributed to the development and maintenance of hindpaw edema, and that chronic MP administration dose- and time-dependently blocked neurogenic extravasation at a post-junctional level, thus reversing spontaneous extravasation and limb edema in this model.

A comparative study of the effects of magnetic stimulation and electric stimulation on peripheral nerve injury in rat.

The influence of pulsed magnetic stimulation (MS) on the sciatic nerve injury was investigated. Thirty rats were divided into three groups equally: MS group (A), electric stimulation (ES) group (B) and the control group (C). The MS and ES were applied immediately after the first 10 min of the sciatic nerve crush. Sciatic function index (SFI), toe spreading reflex (TSR), muscular weight and volume were measured after the experiment. The TSR of in the groups A and B occurred at 4th day while in the control group it occurs at 10th day. There was statistically significant difference in SFI between groups A and B (P < 0.01). The weight and volume of the gastrocnemius muscle were statistically greater in the groups A and B than in the control group (P < 0.01). The effect of MS was similar to that of ES. It was suggested that the application of MS immediately after the nerve injury might have an important clinical value as it can accelerate functional recovery and prevent or minimize muscle atrophy. The technique is easily to operate, non-invasion, painless and permits tolerance of high intensity output to be used.

[Evaluation of biocompatibility on titanium-zicornium alloy].

In this study, the general toxicity tests including cytotoxicity, haemolysis and oral mucous irratation of the Ti-Zr alloy were investigated. The results showed the level of cytotoxicity was grade 0, the haemolysis degree was 0.15% and no histomorphologic change was observed in the animals of Ti-Zr alloy groups. These data indicate that Ti-Zr alloy has good biocompatibility as a dental material.

[Influence of surface roughness of pure titanium on accumulation of bacterium].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of surface roughness of pure titanium on adhesion of bacterium. METHODS: A total of six edentulous volunteers with healthy oral mucosa participated in an in vivo study. Four kinds of pure Titanium testing pieces with different surfaces were fixed in the polished surface of upper complete dentures and the other in the tissue surface of the dentures. After 6-month wearing the dentures, the amount and species of bacterium adhered on pure Titanium were examined. RESULTS: (1) Individual difference had a significant influence on amount of bacterium adhered on pure Titanium, but had no relation to species of bacterium according to Gram's staining. (2) To the same patient, with the increase of roughness, bacterium adhered on samples improved in amount (P < 0.01), but remained the same in composition. Wrinkly samples collected more bacterium than plane samples and exhibited G- coccus beside G+ coccus. Comparing two samples with same roughness, the one with roughness on the tissue surface of the denture collected less bacterium than that on the polished surface (P < 0.01), and predominantly presented G- rod bacterium and coccus, which was completely different to that on the polished surface. CONCLUSION: From the perspective of benefit to periodontal tissue, plane surface should be adopted when framework of pure Titanium is made, and polishing of the prosthesis after being modified should be paid more attention, especially on the tissue surface.

Changes of reliability and efficiency of micronucleus bioassay in Vicia faba after exposure to metal contamination for several generations.

Mitotic root micronucleus (MCN) frequency in Vicia faba as a bioassay, is primarily based on the extent of the sentinel Vicia response in terms of cytogenetic damage quantitatively or qualitatively to indicate the presence of mutagenic contaminants. This paper describes an investigation designed to assess changes in MCN frequencies of Vicia faba from three generation plants obtained, respectively from a reference site (RS) and a metal-contaminated experimental field (EF) in the bioassay of mutagenic Cd(2+) and NaN(3). The background value, dose-response to Cd(2+) and to NaN(3) in three generation (F(1), F(2) and F(3)) plants of the EF and the initial (F(0)) plants were determined in terms of MCN frequencies. With more generations of growing Vicia plants in the EF, a higher background value of MCN frequency, a lower slope value in the regression equation, a smaller ratio of MCN frequency between the control and treatment in the same generation and larger perturbation values were observed. This denotes that the decreased reliability and efficiency are represented in Vicia plants from the EF if the plants are used as sentinels in the bioassay of mutagenic Cd(2+) and NaN(3). It was concluded that the Vicia MCN bioassay should be used as an endpoint biomarker acceptable in biomonitoring environmental mutagens when the sentinel plants were collected from clean areas. Because no place is absolutely without pollutants, it is suggested that several seed stock centers should be established for providing sentinel Vicia if Vicia MCN bioassay is used as a biomarker to identify the global environmental status.

Determination of resibufogenin and cinobufagin in heart-protecting musk pill by HPLC.

A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for the simultaneous determination of resibufogenin and cinobufagin in traditional Chinese medicine (heart-protecting musk pill, shexiang baoxin wan in Chinese) was developed. A reversed-phase system with a Hypersil (ODS2) C(18) column and tetrahydrofuran: methanol: water (8:31:61) mobile phase was employed for the separation of resibufogenin and cinobufagin. The detection was set at 299 nm and ethinyl estradiol was chosen as the internal standard. The limit of detection was 1.5 ng for resibufogenin and 2.0 ng for cinobufagin at a signal-to-noise ratio of 4:1. It is a rapid, simple and accurate method for quantitative analysis of resibufogenin and cinobufagin in heart-protecting musk pill.

The maize CR4 receptor-like kinase mediates a growth factor-like differentiation response.

The maize crinkly4 (cr4) gene encodes a predicted receptor kinase that is required for the normal differentiation of leaf epidermis (Becraft et al., 1996). Here we confirm that the presumptive cytoplasmic domain is capable of autophosphorylation on serine and threonine residues. The cr4 transcript is most abundant in young developing tissues of the shoot but was not detected in the root. Phenotypic analysis of strong mutant alleles indicates that cr4 functions throughout shoot development to control the differentiation of internal as well as epidermal tissues. However, epidermal cells appear most sensitive to perturbations in CR4 signaling because epidermal defects are more pronounced than internal cell defects. Epidermal cells show irregularities in shape, cell wall thickness and structure, cuticle formation, and vesicle trafficking. Some plants show tumor-like proliferations of cells on the leaves. Thus CR4 regulates an array of developmental responses including cell proliferation, fate, pattern, and differentiation suggesting a function analogous to growth factor responses in animals.

[Clinicopathologic study of patients with small cell carcinoma of the cervix].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of small cell carcinoma of the cervix. METHODS: Eight patients with small cell carcinoma of the cervix were treated from May 1991 to December 1997 at Jiangxi Women's and Children's Hospital. Clinical data and follow-up records were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Five patients had stage I(b) disease and 3 had stage II(b) disease. Seven patients underwent radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymph node dissection. One patient with stage II(b) disease was only treated with radiotherapy. Of the patients treated with operation, three showed pelvic lymph node metastases. Four patients who are alive free of the disease have been followed for 2, 13, 16 and 25 months, respectively. The survival intervals of 4 patients who died of the disease was 4, 5, 7 and 10 months, respectively. Of the death, one patient was only treated with radiotherapy, another had a very large cervical tumor and the two others complicated with pelvic lymph node metastases. CONCLUSIONS: Small cell carcinoma of the cervix is an aggressive tumor with a potentiality for early pelvic lymph node metastases and rapid recurrence, It is associated with higher mortality than any other cervical malignant neoplasms. It is able to make a right diagnosis with a combination of histopathologic and immunohistochemical characteristics.

Detection of nonthermal melting by ultrafast X-ray diffraction.

Using ultrafast, time-resolved, 1.54 angstrom x-ray diffraction, thermal and ultrafast nonthermal melting of germanium, involving passage through nonequilibrium extreme states of matter, was observed. Such ultrafast, optical-pump, x-ray diffraction probe measurements provide a way to study many other transient processes in physics, chemistry, and biology, including direct observation of the atomic motion by which many solid-state processes and chemical and biochemical reactions take place.

Dauricine inhibits redistribution of platelet membrane glycoprotein IV and release of intracellular alpha-granule thrombospondin induced by thrombin.

AIM: To study the possibility of dauricine (Dau) inhibiting redistribution of platelet membrane glycoprotein IV (GPIV) and release of intracellular alpha-granule thrombospondin (TSP) on platelet activation. METHODS: Using the flow cytometric assay of washed platelet to record expression of GPIV and release of TSP induced by thrombin. RESULTS: Dau did not affect GPIV and TSP on resting platelet membrane but inhibited redistribution of GPIV to the platelet surface and TSP release on activated platelet. There was a marked positive correlation between changes of GPIV and TSP (r = 0.511, P < 0.01). The inhibitory effect of Dau appeared not to be Ca2+ concentration-dependent. CONCLUSION: Dau inhibited redistribution of GPIV and release of intracellular alpha-granule thrombospondin induced by thrombin.

[The study on mechanical properties of laser welds of titanium in dentistry].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanical properties of laser welds of titanium under different conditions. METHODS: Home-made Nd: YAG laser welding apparatus was used to weld TA2 and Ti-6Al-4V under different laser energy. Instron universal testing machine was adopted to measure the tensile load, 0.2% yield load and absolute elongation. The fractured surface was observed under SEM, Vickers microhardness values at welding area were measured and the mechanical properties after immersion in artificial saliva were detected. RESULTS: The mechanical strength of laser welds were related with material, voltage and the combination of them. At 700V-750V, there was no significant difference between tensile load of TA2 laser welds and that of the original material. For Ti-6Al-4V, At 750V. The mechanical strength of laser welds before and after immersion in artificial saliva made no statistic difference. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that the heat-affected zone of laser welding might be small and the corrosion resistance in artificial saliva might be high. The mechanical strength of titanium laser weld might meet the clinical demands at 19-20J/P.

Maximizing the hemodynamic benefit of enhanced external counterpulsation.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for angina and exertional ischemia in patients with coronary disease. HYPOTHESIS: It is hypothesized that the ability of EECP to enhance the recruitment or development of coronary collaterals in coronary artery disease may be determined by the relative magnitude of diastolic augmentation (DA) and systolic unloading (SU). This study examines the relation between the proposed EECP effectiveness ratio (DA/SU), as assessed by finger plethysmography, and changes in descending aortic flow as assessed by Doppler echocardiography in 15 patients during EECP. METHODS: Varying external cuff pressures (0-275 mmHg) were used to generate a range of DA/SU ratios. The effect on aortic antegrade systolic and retrograde diastolic flow was assessed by Doppler echocardiography to determine whether there was an optimal EECP effectiveness ratio that maximizes the hemodynamic effects of EECP. With increasing DA/SU there was an initial positive linear increase in both systolic and diastolic flow volume. Systolic flow maximized at an effectiveness ratio of 1.5 and diastolic flow at a ratio of 2.0 RESULT: Therefore, effectiveness ratios (DA/SU) in the range of 1.5-2.0 are optimal for maximizing the hemodynamic effects of EECP.

Prior revascularization increases the effectiveness of enhanced external counterpulsation.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is an effective noninvasive treatment for chronic angina. However, its usefulness has been felt to be limited in patients with angiographically demonstrated triple-vessel coronary artery disease (CAD), in accord with the hypothesis that a patent vessel is necessary for transmission of the EECP-augmented coronary artery pressure and volume to the distal coronary vasculature. METHODS: The effect of revascularization [coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)] prior to EECP was examined in 60 patients with CAD and chronic angina (35 without and 25 with prior CABG). Patients were grouped by the extent of CAD (single-, double-, triple-vessel disease in the unrevascularized group) and by the extent of residual disease (number of stenotic native vessels unbypassed or supplied by a stenotic graft in the CABG group). Significant CAD or graft stenoses were defined as stenoses demonstrating > or = 70% luminal diameter narrowing. Benefit was assessed by improvement in post-EECP treatment over pretreatment radionuclide stress testing. RESULTS: Radionuclide stress testing demonstrated a comparable favorable response (80 vs. 71%; p = NS) in patients with prior CABG versus unrevascularized patients. Enhanced external counterpulsation was highly and comparably effective in patients with unrevascularized native single- and double-vessel CAD and in patients with CABG with residual single- and double-vessel CAD (88 vs. 80%; p = NS). Most notably, CABG significantly increased the beneficial response to EECP in those patients with triple-vessel CAD and stenotic grafts compared with unrevascularized patients with triple-vessel CAD (80 vs. 22%; p < 0.05 by chi-square test). CONCLUSION: The results suggest a new role for EECP as an effective treatment for post CABG ischemia, despite extensive CAD and even in the presence of stenotic grafts.
