Routine isotropic computed tomography scanning of the abdomen and pelvis.

For 30 years, abdominal CT has been imaged and reviewed in the axial plane. It is now possible to carry out isotropic imaging of the whole abdomen and pelvis using a 40-channel scanner. This allows creation of coronal and sagittal reformats with the same image quality as the axial images. In this study, we present our experience of reviewing routinely coronal and, occasionally, sagittal reformats. We discuss situations where these nonaxial reformats are most beneficial.

Simultaneous medullary carcinoma, occult papillary carcinoma and lymphocytic thyroiditis.

A 55-year-old female underwent total thyroidectomy for medullary carcinoma of the left lobe of the thyroid. The right lobe showed an incidental occult papillary carcinoma. There was also diffuse lymphocytic thyroiditis. Immunohistochemistry for calcitonin and thyroglobin confirmed the separate histogenesis for both carcinomas. The coexistence of medullarry and papillary carcinoma of the thyroid is rare and the literature usually documents mixed tumours with features of both carcinomas, rather than independent tumours, as in our case.

Retained stones in the common bile duct: results of management.

Seventeen patients underwent treatment for retained common bile duct stones. In 7 patients the stones were removed via a T-tube tract using steerable catheters while 5 patients underwent ERCP and sphincterotomy and 5 underwent surgical re-exploration. Considering morbidity, mortality, success rate and patients' stay in the hospital, non-operative modalities should be the treatment of choice for retained common bile duct stones.

Enteric drainage pancreatic transplantation.

Enteric drainage is currently the preferred method of pancreatic transplantation. This technique results in long-term good control of diabetes. In this report we discuss the postoperative radiologic anatomy and complications.
