Effect of treatment of mice with cyclophosphamide (CY) on the delayed hypersensitivity (DH) response was investigated in C57BL/6 mice. DH to methylated human serum albumin (MHSA) could be enhanced with CY in young mice but not in aged ones. DH enhancement with CY appeared to be due to elimination of suppressor T cells involved in DH. Effector T cells were also sensitive to CY, the damaging effect of CY on these latter cells was, however, transient suggesting the rapid recovery of effector T cells. The overshooting recovery of the effector T cells required the presence of the thymus. It is more probably that there are at least two distinct subpopulations of T cells in DH, effector T cells, and suppressor T cells. The distinction is already apparent in the thymus stage. The suppressor T cells, categorized as a central regulator, seem to be antigen nonspecific and regulate the more effectively the DH in young mice, thus physiological role of these cells in age-associated immune alterations is implicated.

Twelve cases of medullary thyroid carcinoma were investigated ty the immunoperoxidase method using anti-calcitonin, anti-C-thyroglobulin (C-Tg, C cell-immunoreactive thyroglobulin) and anti-19S thyroglobulin antisera. Tumor cells as well as normal C cells revealed distinct immunoreaction for C-Tg besides for calcitonin. In contrast to normal C cells, the tumor cells were stained more intensely by anti-Ctg antiserum than by anti-calcitonin antiserum. Furthermore, there occurred several tumors or some areas of tumors which showed strong response to anti-C-Tg antiserum but weak or no response to anti-calcitonin antiserum. Thus, medullary carcinoma cells synthesized far greater amounts of C-Tg than calcitonin. The small follicles were occasionally observed mingled in typical cell solid masses. They stored colloid-like materials which were intensely immunoreactive to C-Tg but nonreactive to calcitonin. The specific immunoreaction patterns to anti-C-Tg and anti-calcitonin antisera were also obtained on the ground materials of the amyloid. On the histogenesis of amyloids of medullary carcinoma, the C-Tg could be the presursor of the fibrillar protein of amyloids and the component of the fibrillar protein also closely related to calcitonin.

A case of leiomyosarcoma that appeared to have originated in the ligamentum teres hepatis of a 66-year-old female has been presented. The case was suspected of leiomyosarcoma originating in the ligamentum teres of the liver from the findings by preoperative examinations, and definitely diagnosed as such in a laparotomy and by histological examination of the resected tissue specimen.

The distribution of membrane-bound monoamine oxidase in 30 strains of various bacteria was studied. Monoamine oxidase was determined by using an ammonia-selective electrode; analyses were sensitive and easy to perform. The enzyme was found in some strains of the family Enterobacteriaceae, such as Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Escherichia, Salmonella, Serratia, and Proteus. Among strains of other families of bacteria tested, only Pseudomonas aeruginosa IFO 3901, Micrococcus luteus IFO 12708, and Brevibacterium ammoniagenes IAM 1641 had monoamine oxidase activity. In all of these bacteria except B. ammoniagenes, monoamine oxidase was induced by tyramine and was highly specific for tyramine, octopamine, dopamine, and norepinephrine. The enzyme in two strains oxidized histamine or benzylamine. Correlations between the distributions of membrane-bound monoamine oxidase and arylsulfatase synthesized in the presence of tyramine were discussed.
The bacterial host range of coliphage P1 was extented by using the heat-inducible phage P1clr100KM. A gene for kanamycin resistance was transferred from Escherichia coli to members of the family Enterobacteriaceae and some other genera of gram-negative bacteria. P1 phage was produced by thermal induction from the lysogens of all these kanamycin-resistant bacteria except some strains.
A case of transient hyperthyrotropinaemia was found by mass screening for neonatal hypothyroidism using the paired TSH assay method. The patient was a baby boy born at term after a normal pregnancy who grew without any abnormal signs or symptoms. For the first 7 months after birth, his serum TSH was abnormally high while his total serum T4, T3, and free T4, T3 were within normal limits, exept for slightly low free T4 level at 7 months. The raised serum TSH decreased spontaneously to within normal limits after he was 9 months old.
The breath hydrogen test (BHT) was adapted for use in young infants and children. The diagnostic criterion of sugar malabsorption in the BHT was determined by oral administration of 0.5 g/kg of unabsorbable sugar (lactulose) to 21 healthy infants and children. A maximum increase in breath hydrogen less than 0.05 ml/min per m2 was observed in all subjects. A good correlation between results by the BHT and by the ordinary lactose tolerance test was obtained after oral administration of 2 g/kg lactose to 21 healthy infants and children, 2 congenital lactase-deficient infants, and 7 adults. Using this test, 80 healthy Japanese infants and children (aged between one month and 15 years) and 18 adults were examined for lactose malabsorption after a dose of 1 g/kg lactose. All infants and children under 2-years old absorbed lactose completely. The incidence of lactose malabsorption was 30% in 3-year, 36% in 4-year, 58% in 5-year, and 86% in 6-year-old children, 85% in schoolchildren, and 89% in adults. Thus the incidence of lactase deficiency gradually increases with age from 3 years, and about 90% of all normal Japanese adults are lactase-deficient.

Transureteroureterostomy was performed in 32 adult dogs, and the results were evaluated by electroureterographic, roentgenographic and histological investigations. The results revealed no significant ill effect on ureteral and renal functions, indicating the procedure to be quite reasonable and clinically acceptable.
