[Effectiveness of several antiemetics in vomiting induced by orally administrated copper sulfate in cats and dogs].

Long marketed antiemetics, which are still used in medicine or veterinary medicine and whose sites of actions were either assumed to be peripheral or unknown, were subjected to evaluation as antiemetics, against oral copper sulfate emesis. In cats, ethyl aminobenzoate 0.5 g/head, cerium oxalate 0.1 g/head, pinelliae tuber 0.5 g/head and gelatin 2.0 g/head were not effective. In dogs, ethyl aminobenzoate 0.5 g/head, pinelliae tuber 2.0 g/head and hange-syasintoo 2.0 g/head were not effective. Cerium oxalate 0.1 g/head was found to have a slight antiemetic action.

[Reproducibility of copper sulfate emesis by oral administration in dogs].

Twelve dogs were administered oral threshold doses of copper sulfate every week. In 66 out of 85 cases, dogs vomited. One dog vomited in 1st and 2nd tests, but did not respond in the other 6 tests. Excluding this one, the reproducibility was 82%. The following method is thus proposed for application in evaluating an antiemetic for oral copper sulfate. Small dogs, weighing 7-14 kg, are to be kept in a constant condition during the quarantine and tests and given the emetic once a week. The threshold dose is determined in three dose levels; 20, 40, 80 mg/head. The dogs with a threshold of more than 80 mg or latency of less than 5 min or of more than 45 min are to be excluded. Inhibition of emesis or a considerable prolongation of latency is the sign of an antiemetic action. A positive action of an antiemetic must be followed by another test with the threshold dose of copper sulfate alone. If the dog does not respond to the threshold dose after 2 administrations, the case must be excluded. To evaluate an antiemetic at least 5 cases are needed. Inhibition of more than 50% appears to be the positive response.

[Action mechanism of sodium polyacrylates against stomach ulcer].

Three sodium polyacrylates (PAS) with different viscosities were examined for antiulcerogenic properties. Rats were fed with sugar containing a PAS for 4 hr and subjected to 12 hr reserpinization or stress by water immersion. Lower incidence of ulceration and larger amount of stomach content after the experiment were found in the PAS administered groups. The higher viscous PAS was more effective in prevention of ulceration and in prolongation of gastric emptying. Intragastric administration of the drugs to pylorus ligated rats reduced forestomach ulceration. However, differences in the antiulcerogenic activity of three drugs were not observed. The effects on the gastric secretion of three PAS (50 mg) were also examined, using pylorus ligated (6 hr) rats. In PAS groups, the free acid in the gastric juice was reduced to some extent. There was, however, no relation between the antiacid effect and viscosity. The drugs inhibited the peptic digestion in vitro, but the difference of viscosity was not related to the antipeptic effect. It is concluded that prolongation of gastric emptying may be a major factor in the antiulcerogenic activity of PAS.

Studies on the buckwheat allergose report 1: on the cases with the buckwheat allergose.

In this report 9 cases with the buckwheat allergose treated and observed in our allergy clinic are summarized. The following is to be specially mentioned as the most distinguishing traits of the buckwheat allergose. 1) Among such hypersensitive manifestations with buckwheat as asthmatic attacks, urticaria eruption, gastrointestinal disorders, nasal symptoms or congestion of conjunctiva, the boundary line cannot be drawn. 2) The manifestation develops both when the allergen substance invades into the body through mouth and when through air way. 3) Judging from the results of various kinds of allergic examination, the hypersensitive manifestations are attributed to the allergic mechanism based on the antigen-antibody reaction in the strict sense of the word. And the buckwheat allergose is considered to be the model of the type 1 allergy (that is immediate type allergy) proposed by Coombs and Gell. 4) The antigenity of buckwheat is extremely strong, and the hyposensitization treatment with buckwheat must not easily be applied for fear of a severe and dangerous reaction due to the injection of the buckwheat extract.

Ectopic calcinosis possibly due to 1 alpha (OH) vitamin D3 in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus.

A 30-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) developed ectopic calcinosis. She had been receiving prednisolone since 1980 with the addition of vitamin D3 in 1986. Despite this therapy, her renal function had gradually deteriorated. Right gonalgia was noted in September 1991. X-ray findings revealed calcinosis of the arteries of the femur, poplitea, cubitus, hands, and feet. Her finger pads and joint sacs were also involved. Calcinosis seen in SLE has only rarely been reported, and that observed in association with vitamin D intoxication or arteriosclerosis has a different distribution of calcium deposits. The use of vitamin D3 in our patient with renal disability may have induced calcinosis with a unique distribution.
