Many hands make light work.

As part of an ongoing minute of the Association of Genito-Urinary Medicine (AGUM's) national body, this committee's non consultant career grade (NCCG) representative has added another reflective chapter about this heterogeneous group of doctors working in genitourinary medicine (GUM) throughout the British Isles. Here, current progress is briefly explained and some of the revelations unmasked by the compilation of a national database for NCCG are enumerated along with a few personal suggestions for improving the mutual benefits of NCCG contribution within GUM in the UK.

Non-consultant career grade staff in GUM: a reliable silent backbone of the specialty or, a spare pair of hands?

Much of the genito-urinary medicine (GUM) medical workforce of the UK is composed of non-consultant career grade doctors (NCCG) whose lot in the specialty has been much neglected. A questionnaire was sent to the 108 known members of 1994 and a resumé of their replies is presented. The greatest plight of this group apart from its non-uniformity of status, are 2 concerns over employment conditions and lack of continuing medical education. An interim report was presented to the main national AGUM committee and a programme for tackling some of the major issues has been proposed. As the International Journal of STD and AIDS has now been approved to be an intrinsic part of AGUM membership, it is felt that a report in its pages would be appropriate.
