Solid phase radioimmunoassay for quantitating anti-HBs in hepatitis B immune globulin.

A solid phase radioimmunoassay was used to quantitate the antibody in hepatitis B immune globulin. Polystyrene tubes coated with HBsAg were incubated with several dilutions of trace-labeled immune globulin, and the specific uptake was measure. Resulting data could be used to obtain the total antibody concentration in micrograms per milliliter as well as the intrinsic binding constant and index of heterogeneity.

Ability of tryptophan tRNA to hybridize with 35S RNA of avian myeloblastosis virus and to prime reverse transcription in vitro.

Selected species of 4S RNA of chick embryo cells will hybridize in vitro with 35S RNA of avian myeloblastosis virus. A major tRNA component of the hybridizable 4S RNA is tryptophan tRNA. A hybrid prepared from purified tryptophan tRAN and 35S RNA of avian myeloblastosis virus in vitro is an efficient templateprimer for DNA synthesis catalyzed by reverse transcriptase (RNA-dependent DNA polymerase).

Retained perfluorodecalin after retinal detachment surgery.

Liquid perfluorocarbons such as perfluorodecalin are widely used as intraoperative vitreous substitutes in certain complicated vitreoretinal conditions. Retained perfluorodecalin postoperatively has been reported to be associated with retinal damage and other complications. We report on a case of retained intraocular perfluorodecalin for eleven postoperative days after retinal detachment surgery with good anatomical and visual outcome after one year follow-up.

Vitrectomy in the management of diabetic eye disease.

Vitrectomy techniques including endolaser photocoagulation allow visual rehabilitation in many eyes that are otherwise untreatable. Discerning the indications and timing for diabetic vitrectomy is increasingly important as the treatment of complications of diabetic retinopathy continues to undergo modification and redefinition. The most common indications for diabetic vitrectomy include: 1) severe nonclearing vitreous hemorrhage; 2) traction retinal detachment recently involving the macula; 3) combined traction and rhegmatogenous detachment; 4) progressive fibrovascular proliferation; and 5) rubeosis iridis and vitreous hemorrhage for eyes in which the media opacity has prevented adequate laser photocoagulation. Other less common indications in selected cases include dense premacular hemorrhage, ghost cell glaucoma, macular edema with premacular traction, cataract preventing treatment of severe, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, anterior hyaloidal fibrovascular proliferation, and fibrinoid syndrome with retinal detachment. The rationale and surgical objectives are discussed and results are summarized.

Maximal mydriasis evaluation in cataract surgery.

We propose the Maximal Mydriasis Test (MMT) as a simple and safe means to provide the cataract surgeon with objective and dependable pre-operative information on the idiosyncratic mydriatic response of the pupil. The MMT results of a consecutive series of 165 eyes from 100 adults referred for cataract evaluation are presented to illustrate its practical applications and value. The results of the MMT allows the surgeon to anticipate problem eyes pre-operatively so that he can plan his surgical strategy more appropriately and effectively. Conversely, the surgeon can also appropriately and confidently plan surgical procedures where wide pupillary dilation is important. The MMT has also helped improve our cost-effectiveness by cutting down unnecessary delays in the operating room and enabling better utilisation of restricted costly resources.
