A case of disseminated hemangiomatosis with cutaneous, hepatic and skeletal manifestations and increased urinary excretion of glycosaminoglycans.

A case of disseminated hemangiomatosis with cutaneous hepatic and extensive skeletal manifestations is reported. The diagnosis was established by means of bone X-ray, hepatic angiography, and skin and bone biopsies. A moderately increased urinary excretion of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) was found. The main GAG fraction excreted was tentatively identified as a heparan sulphate.

The lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) erythrocyte; morphology, ultrastructure, major plasma membrane proteins and phospholipids, and cytoskeletal organization.

The aim of this study was to characterize the erythrocyte of the lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis), a primitive vertebrate. The lamprey erythrocyte predominantly has a non-axisymmetric stomatocytelike shape. It has a nucleus and a haemoglobin-filled cytosol with a few organelles and vesicular structures. Surprisingly, there is no marginal band of microtubules. Sodium dodecylsulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by Coomassie blue staining of isolated plasma membranes revealed a single band at the level of the human spectrin doublet. Major bands also occurred at approximately 175 kDa and comigrating with human erythrocyte actin (approximately 45 kDa). The presence of spectrin, actin and vimentin was shown by immunoblotting. Band 3 protein, the anion exchanger in higher vertebrates, seemed to be highly deficient or lacking, as was also the case with ankyrin. Confocal laser scanning microscopy combined with immunocytochemical methods showed spectrin, actin and vimentin mainly to be localized around the nucleus, from where actin- and vimentin-strands extended out into the cytoplasm. Actin also seemed to be present at the plasma membrane. Phospholipid analyses of plasma membrane preparations showed the presence of the same four major phospholipid groups as in the human erythrocyte, although with higher and lower amounts of phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin, respectively. The low fluorescein isothiocyanate conjugated annexin V binding, as monitored by flow cytometry, indicated that phosphatidylserine is mainly confined to the inner membrane leaflet in the lamprey erythrocyte plasma membrane.

Polarity effect in plane-parallel ionization chambers using air or a dielectric liquid as ionization medium.

A plane-parallel ionization chamber having a sensitive volume of 2 mm3 and using the dielectric liquid tetramethylsilane as the sensitive medium instead of air is described. In the design of the chamber special attention was given to the factors that can cause unwanted currents in the cable, stem, or the chamber dielectric material. The chamber has been tested with respect to the polarity effect in regions of radiation fields where ordinary plane-parallel ionization chambers will often fail. These regions are the build-up region in photon fields, and the region close to the practical range for electrons where nonelectronic equilibrium is significant. Experimental results show that, despite the extremely small ionization volume in the liquid ionization chamber, the polarity effect never exceeds a few tenths of a percent in field positions where well-known commercially available chambers with much less spatial resolution designed for measurements in radiation therapy fields can show polarity effects of 5% to 30%. The origin of spurious currents and how they must be minimized in the design of either a liquid- or gas-filled ionization chamber is discussed.

Reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament with carbon fiber. An experimental study on pigs.

During a follow-up period of 16 weeks in 18 pigs, macroscopical and histological studies revealed invasion of fibroblasts and mesenchymal cells around the carbon fiber prosthesis inserted to replace the ACL but scarce tissue ingrowth into the prosthesis proper. There was no adherence of the carbon ligament onto the bony channels. The peak tensile strength of the reconstructed ligament was about one third of the paired normal ACL ligament during the 16 week experiment.

Carbon fiber as a prosthetic anterior cruciate ligament. A biochemical and histological analysis in pigs.

Connective tissue ingrowth into a carbon fiber prosthesis inserted as a substitute for the ACL was biochemically quantified in an experimental pig model with a followup of 16 weeks. During this time, the net collagen amount expressed as hydroxyproline increased to only half that of the normal control ligament. Histological studies revealed relatively few fibroblasts capable of producing collagen inside the alloplastic ligament. When these results are considered in conjunction with those of our earlier report of the disappointing mechanical strength of the carbon fiber substitutes, it seems evident that carbon fiber is not a suitable replacement for the ACL, mainly because of its failure to produce a "neoligament" before it disintegrates.

Aneurysmal bone cyst: evaluation of resection and of curettage in 20 cases.

The clinical, angiographic and histological aspects of 20 cases of aneurysmal bone cyst suggest that angiography is a valuable aid in the diagnosis of a cyst, differentiating it from other cystic bone lesions. Angiographic information also has a certain bearing on the origin of the lesion. It was demonstrated that other, benign, lesions may exist adjacent to the cyst or prior to it; in most cases, however, the cyst appears in a bone which is otherwise normal. The failure to differentiate between aneurysmal bone cyst and giant cell tumor in relation to sex, age, localizaiton, morphology, and clinical course (e.g. tendency of recurrence and malignant transformation) may be responsible for confusion in the literature on these lesions. Good results of treatment are achievable by resection en bloc and by resection, or curettage with bone grafting. Curettage alone is inadequate. Only two recurrences (10%) were recorded in the present series during the average follow-up period of 4.5 years.
