Human tolerance of flumecinol (Zixoryn, RGH-3332), its regime and dosage in healthy volunteers.

The enzyme inductive effect of flumecinol (Zixoryn, RGH-3332), a new hepatic enzyme inducer, was studied in healthy volunteers. The dosages employed were as follows: 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600 and 800 mg single doses; and during a 7-day period single doses of 50 mg daily, and doses of 200, 300 and 400 mg three times daily. The intensity of enzyme induction was measured by the following parameters: antipyrine metabolic clearance, D-glucaric acid excretion, menthol loading, and total serum bilirubin. The minimal and optimal inductive doses of flumecinol were determined. A single dose of 600 mg of flumecinol is recommended at intervals of 7 days. This dosage also induces the first and the second phases of reactions. The induction effect becomes manifest after 24 hours. Its peak is reached between 48 and 96 hours, and the inductive activity ceases between 216 and 408 hours.

Physical attractiveness: the influence of selected torso parameters.

Front-view line drawings of male and female physiques were rated for attractiveness. Both subject sexes rated female physiques with greater curvature as less attractive. Male subjects' ratings were unaffected by breast size while female subjects showed slight negative evaluation of large breasts. Both subjects sexes rated broad shoulders as attractive in male physiques. Greater chest muscularity resulted in slightly higher attractiveness ratings; waist slimness was also judged attractive, particularly in female subjects.

Attention in hysteria: a study of Janet's hypothesis by means of habituation and arousal measures.

Toward the end of the 19th century, Janet suggested that the fundamental disorder in hysteria was one of attention. The authors examined this idea in a study of habituation. Patients with a history of prolonged conversion symptons (N = 11) showed a severe impairment in habituation when compared with patients with anxiety neuroses (N = 10). This finding cannot be explained in terms of arousal and suggests that selective inattention is deficient in hysterical individuals.

The sensory filter in schizophrenia: a study of habituation, arousal, and the dopamine hypothesis.

The possible failure of a notional sensory filter in schizophrenia was studied by means of habituation of the orienting response. Non-paranoid schizophrenics failed to habituate, but paranoids habituated normally. Paranoids, however, showed a different impairment: they responded to a dishabituating tone as if the novel stimulus were somewhat familiar. The failure of habituation in non-paranoids could not be explained in terms of arousal when the index was the rate of skin conductance fluctuation. Neurotic controls showed considerably higher levels than either group of schizophrenics. Non-paranoid schizophrenics had lost the normal inverse relationship between habituation and level of arousal as manifested in the rate of spontaneous skin conductance fluctuation.

P300 topographic asymmetries are present in unmedicated schizophrenics.

Our laboratory has repeatedly found a left < right auditory P300 temporal lobe topographic asymmetry in right-handed, medicated schizophrenics. To determine whether this asymmetry was attributable to the effects of antipsychotic medications, we collected auditory "odd-ball" P300 event-related potentials from 14 right-handed, unmedicated schizophrenics (withdrawn from medication for an average of 21 days) and 14 right-handed, normal controls. Analysis of normalized P300 amplitudes showed a statistically significant difference in the voltage distributions between groups (a group by temporal electrode site interaction) that was consistent with a left < right temporal voltage asymmetry in schizophrenics but not in the normal controls. We conclude that P300 topographic asymmetries are present in unmedicated schizophrenics. These data are compatible with the growing body of data suggesting left temporal lobe structural abnormalities in schizophrenia.
