Waterborne outbreak of rotavirus diarrhoea in adults in China caused by a novel rotavirus.

During two epidemics of acute diarrhoea in China in late 1982/early 1983, more than 12 000 adults in two coal mining districts were affected. The virus isolated from stool samples resembled a rotavirus morphologically. Antigenically it lacked the group antigen shared by known rotaviruses. Like other rotaviruses it had a double-stranded RNA with 11 discrete segments, but the pattern of migration of the segments on polyacrylamide electrophoresis differed from those of other rotaviruses.

Ultrastructural changes during herpes simplex virus type 2 latency and reactivation in vitro.

An in vitro latency system using herpes simplex virus type 2(HSV2)-infected human embryonic lung cells treated with cytosine arabinoside (ara-C) and incubated at 39.5 degrees after drug removal was used to examine the ultrastructure of the infected cells during (i) ara-C treatment, (ii) the latent period after ara-C removal and temperature elevation, and (iii) reactivation after superinfection with human cytomegalovirus. In the presence of ara-C 'empty', nonenveloped, herpesvirus-like particles were observed in nuclei with fragmented chromatin. After removal of ara-C and temperature elevation, no virions were found. At no time during latent infection were complete virions seen. After superinfection with human cytomegalovirus, extensive synthesis of proteins was suggested by a marked proliferation of rough endoplasmic reticulum, polysomes, and Golgi vesicles. This was followed by the appearance of an electron-dense viral matrix in both the nucleus and cytoplasm and by formation of normal nucleocapsids in the nucleus. The nature of the protein(s) required to reactivate HSV2 is unknown but may involve proteins coded by the virus, the host or both.

Morphological evidence for identifying the viruses of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome as candidate members of the Bunyaviridae family. Brief report.

Thin section immuno-electron microscopy has been successfully applied to investigate and identify the classical and mild form of HFRS viruses isolated in the People's Republic of China. The results showed that all the 8 strains studied (derived from different parts of China, adapted in different cell lines) share a common morphology and morphogenesis. Essentially, the viruses possess characteristics of members of the Bunyaviridae Family, however, differing by a larger size and size variation and formation of cytoplasmic viral inclusions.

Morphogenesis of vaccinia virus in the process of envelopment as observed by freeze-etching electron microscopy.

The morphogenesis of vaccinia virus was studied during its synthesis in HeLa cells. Freeze-etching electron microscopy demonstrated intramembrane granules attached to convex faces, a granule-free area characterized by eccentric location and smooth appearance, and an eccentric nucleoid structure occasionally associated with a membranous structure. It is postulated that the granule-free area may be a precursor of the nucleoid envelope.
