[Changes in the intensity of effect and spectrum of action on quantitative traits of genes in Arabidopsis under varying conditions of cultivation].

Three experiments were performed in different years to study a pleiotropic effect of two marker genes A and B on quantitative traits in Arabidopsis thaliana L. (Heynh.) Experiments differed in their conditions for plant growth (light intensity and soil fertility). In experiment 1, substitution of B- by bb did not affect the duration of the sowing-flowering period, whereas substitution of A- by aa caused a 2-day delay in flowering. Experiment 2 showed that both genes affected this trait. The delay in flowering was one, two, or three days when B- was substituted by bb, A- by aa, or A-B- by aabb, respectively. Therefore, these genes were additive. Data of experiments 3 were opposite to those of experiment 1: substitution of A- by aa did not affect the trait studied, whereas substitution of B- by bb caused a 2-day elongation of the sowing-flowering period. Thus, variations in growth conditions transformed the effects of the marker genes duration of the sowing-flowering period and changed a set of genes that determined this trait. Note that effects of A and B genes on other qualitative and quantitative traits (for example, plant height) were constant in all experiments. Therefore, transformation of a gene set, which influenced the sowing-flowering period, was not related to the repression or derepression of A and B genes.

[The role of cyclic nucleotides in the processes of adaptation and alteration of body radiosensitivity].

The experimental data on the role of the cyclic nucleotides (cAMP, cGMP) in the mammalian integrating systems and their significance in the processes of adaptation and radiosensitivity change of animals are analysed. The changes in the system of cyclic nucleotides (CN) are reported for a number of morbid conditions at the subunit level. The CN system changes as a body response to the extreme action including ionizing radiation are revealed. A concept on a phase correlation between adrenergic and cholinergic system activity in development of adaptive reaction of a cell and a body on the whole during radiation or the action of some other factors is emphasized. The significance of cAMP/cGMP ratio calculation (coefficient K) is underlined for the analysis and prediction of the morbid state outcome.

[Changes in metabolism of the nervous system in exposure to ionizing radiation at supralethal doses].

Some biochemical disorders in the animals' central nervous system mainly in brain have been analysed after the exposure to superlethal doses of ionizing radiation as well in a state of the so-called early transient incapacity. The metabolism of gamma-aminobutyric acid, ammonia, histamine, cyclic nucleotides, prostaglandins and other biologically active substances is compared. Their investigation as metabolic regulators and modulators for nerve tissue seems to be of particular importance for deciphering the molecular mechanisms of changes in the central nervous system functional state and for discovering the possibility of its maintaining at a given level of activity.

[Characteristics of the development of radiation sickness in guinea pigs exposed to non-uniform irradiation in highly lethal doses].

Certain peculiarities have been revealed in the development of radiation sickness in guinea pigs subjected to nonuniform irradiation with superlethal doses. With electron and gamma-neutron radiation LD50/1.5 was 116.11 and 114.48 Gy respectively, when delivered to whole body, and 133.40 and 111.72 Gy when delivered to the posterior part of the body.

[The RBE of 0.85-MeV neutrons in the intestinal form of radiation sickness in guinea pigs].

Relative biological effectiveness (RBE) coefficient of 0.85 MeV neutrons was 1.87 in comparison with 0.66 MeV gamma radiation (137Cs) when estimated by the death rate of guinea pigs with intestinal form of radiation sickness. LD50/5 was 5.9 and 11.06 respectively. Features of the mortality rate dynamics, clinical picture and pathoanatomical changes are discussed.

[The RBE of 0.85 MeV neutrons on guinea pig mortality].

A comparative study was made of the death rate of guinea pigs after neutron (0.85 MeV) and 137Cs-gamma-radiation (0.66 MeV); LD50/30 were 1.58 and 3.44 Gy respectively. CRBE of neutrons was 2.2 as determined by median lethal dose values for guinea pigs.
