Ultrastructural changes in aspirin hepatotoxicity.

A percutaneous liver biopsy was obtained from a 9-year-old boy who had elevated serum transaminase levels while receiving aspirin treatment for rheumatic fever. Electron microscopy showed extensive fine-structure changes of the hepatocytes, similar to those induced by hepatotoxic drugs. These included marked dilatation of rough endoplasmic reticulum, proliferation of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondrial abnormalities. These ultrastructural changes could be considered evidence that aspirin is hepatotoxic. The morphologic observations reported confirm the need for monitoring patients receiving systemic aspirin treatment transaminase measurements.

The intestinal microvillus. Ultrastructural variability in coeliac disease and cow's milk intolerance.

In 8 patients with coeliac disease, 2 patients with cow's milk intolerance and 10 patients with other gastrointestinal disturbances, intestinal biopsies were examined in order to compare the extent of alteration of surface vs. crypt microvilli (MV). In those diseases associated with the ingestion of a noxious agent, namely coeliac disease and cow's milk intolerance, a marked and abrupt difference between the severely damaged surface epithelium and its MV, and the preserved crypt epithelium was noted. The results of the examinations give reason to suppose that these morphological variations are caused by the higher gliadin or milk protein concentration over the avillous surface epithelium as opposed to the lower one in the elongated crypts.

Incontinentia pigmenti.

Four new cases of incontinentia pigmenti are presented, including chromosome studies of one family. An increased number of chromosome breakages was found in the blood of affected as well as unaffected members of this family.

Case report: infantile sub-lobar emphysema and tracheal bronchus.

Localised disturbance of aeration in children is as often the result of mucosal swelling due to infection as resulting from an inhaled foreign body. The present report adds another cause: tracheal bronchus. Elucidation of this cause of localised disturbance of aeration usually includes bronchoscopy, the anesthesia and direct trauma involved being highly undesirable if i infection is the cause. The case for limited, careful bronchography, before or instead of bronchoscopy, when the history of foreign body is lacking is presented.

The "labial index" in Down's syndrome.

In newborn females with Down's syndrome the labia majora are of a typical appearance, being shorter and wider than in normals. This observation can be expressed numerically by the "labial index", which in mongoloids was found significantly lower.
