Changes in peripheral lymphocyte subsets during radiotherapy for lung cancer patients.

In order to better understand the immunologic effects of irradiation, blood levels of lymphocyte subsets were sequentially monitored in 37 patients before and during irradiation treatment for lung cancer. During irradiation, the peripheral blood levels of each T cell subgroup, OKT3-reactive (OKT3+), OKT4+, OKT8+ and OKT11+ lymphocytes showed similar radiosensitivity. No selective depletion of either OKT4+ or OKT8+ lymphocytes was seen. The levels of OKT6+ and OKT9+ lymphocytes were different depending on the case. At the end of irradiation, the percent of lymphocytes bearing the OKT10 antigen increased significantly. As to OKM1+ and OKIa1+ lymphocytes, the levels were almost consistent but showed a rather big standard deviation.

[Study on suppressed uptake by the liver in 67Ga scintigraphy].

During the past 3 years, we have performed 1525 studies of 67Ga scintigraphy and 38 cases of these showed suppressed liver uptake; 19 cases after chemotherapy, 13 cases with liver dysfunction and 6 cases with competitive blockade. Many cases in chemotherapy used cyclophosphamide and vincristine, and were performed 67Ga scan within 1 week after chemotherapy. In cases showed suppressed uptake by liver after chemotherapy, serum Fe was markedly increased and UIBC was markedly decreased (p less than 0.01). This suggested that serum Fe influenced suppressed uptake by liver more than carrier-protein, disturbed hepatic cells, and receptors.

Development of the external genitalia in rat fetuses.

Development of the external genitalia in rat fetuses was studied with special reference to the formation of the labia pudenda and the determination of the stage at which the sex difference could be recognized from changes in the external structures. The urogenital fold located on either side of the external structures. The urogenital fold located on either side of the urogenital groove gradually enlarges and begins to enclose the genital tubercle with its counter fold on day 20 of gestation. Thus, the urogenital folds, which are known to become the labia minora and the prepuce of clitoris in the human, are differentiated only into the prepuce of clitoris in the rat. The genital swellings situated caudally to the urogenital folds are not well developed and come to be inconspicuously flat in situ at the end of gestation. However, the labia majora are formed by the time of puberty when the vagina opens. Therefore, it seems that the genital swellings contribute to the formation of the labia majora after birth. Sex difference in development of the external genitalia is recognized on day 17 of gestation; a small oval urogenital orifice is larger in male than in female and the genital swellings are better developed in male than in female.

[Antitumor effect of FU-O-G, new antitumor agent, following long term administration].

FU-O-G, the O-glucuronide methylester of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), is a compound with a unique chemical structure. It is an antitumor agent of the prodrug type which exerts its activity by enzymatically liberating 5-FU in tumor tissues. It has been reported that the antitumor activity of this compound is superior to those of 5-FU and Tegafur (FT-207) in the treatment of various transplantable tumors. In this study, long-term administration of FU-O-G to mice bearing relatively slow-growing tumors such as Lewis lung carcinoma, mammary tumor FM3 A and hepatoma MH-134 was carried out. Consequently, FU-O-G was shown to be remarkably effective against those tumors, whereas 5-FU and FT-207 were hardly effective. Long-term daily administration was shown to be more effective than intermittent dosage in the treatment of Lewis lung carcinoma. In combination therapies of FU-O-G with other antitumor drugs, FU-O-G exhibited a synergistic effect against Lewis lung carcinoma when combined with Carboquone (CQ) or Nimustine hydrochloride (ACNU).
