Strong universality and algebraic scaling in two-dimensional Ising spin glasses.

At zero temperature, two-dimensional Ising spin glasses are known to fall into several universality classes. Here we consider the scaling at low but nonzero temperatures and provide numerical evidence that eta approximately equal 0 and nu approximately equal 3.5 in all cases, suggesting a unique universality class. This algebraic (as opposed to exponential) scaling holds, in particular, for the +/- J model, with or without dilutions, and for the plaquette diluted model. Such a picture, associated with an exceptional behavior at T = 0, is consistent with a real space renormalization group approach. We also explain how the scaling of the specific heat is compatible with the hyperscaling prediction.

Stimulated-echo NMR spectroscopy of 9Be and 7Li in solids: method and application to ion conductors.

The generation of pure quadrupolar stimulated-echo spectra is successfully demonstrated for the spin-3/2 probe 9Be in a single crystal of triglycine fluoberyllate. This solid exhibits a paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition. From experiments carried out for various mixing times no indications for a slow soft mode could be detected in this crystal. Then ion conducting lithium metal phosphates were studied using 7Li, another spin-3/2 probe which allows for a non-selective excitation of the entire NMR spectrum. In the indium and the scandium phosphates ultra-slow Li hopping processes could be detected directly via the stimulated-echo technique in a time range of up to four orders of magnitude. Due to the relatively large gyromagnetic ratio and thus strong dipolar interactions of 7Li no pure quadrupolar echoes could be generated. However, from a variation of the evolution times the quadrupolar effects could be separated from the dipolar ones. Finally, the differences in the ion hopping times of lithium indium phosphate and of lithium scandium phosphate are briefly discussed.

Colloidal Particles at Solid-Liquid Interfaces: Mechanisms of Desorption Kinetics.

We study the sorption of colloids on equally charged surfaces. Our focus is on the time scale from hours to weeks, where adsorption is not an irreversible process but interplays with (spontaneous) desorption. Using model calculations, we show how the desorption kinetics is influenced by readsorption, a potential barrier, a secondary potential minimum, local variation of the potential, and bond aging. In the experimental part we present results of in situ observation of the sorption kinetics of polystyrene latex particles onto a glass surface. Combining the evanescent field method with video microscopy, we were able to identify the particle arrival and departure times individually and therefrom determine the adhesion time distribution function. The nonexponentiality of this function can be explained by a gamma distribution of the potential depth at the binding sites as well as by logarithmic bond aging. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.
