[Histomorphology of healing of fractures, splits, and defects in the cranial bones].

The histomorphology of healing of fractures in the calvarial bones were studied: 39 autopsies and 61 bioptic samples were investigated within the time span ranging from 1 to 5 years; as well as 32 experiments with dogs were made. A tight contact between fracture edges is the key condition for fracture healing (of the mentioned bones) through central callus. Should there be no such contact, the fracture edges were joined by fibrous tissue, which lacks any osseous structures. The periosteum of the internal bone lamella and the adjoining dura mater of brain are the main sources for bone regeneration in the calvarium.

[The histo- and ultrastructural characteristics of the bone tissue in osteogenesis imperfecta].

Histo- and ultrastructure of bone tissue in 28 persons (2 section observations and 26 cases of bone biopsy analysis) with congenital fragility of the bones and dysosteogenesis were studied. Age of the victims ranged from 6 months to 38 years (20 men and 8 women). Against the background of bone rarefaction and decrease in quality of basic bone substance the quantity of osteocytes for a unit of osseous beam area increases. Electron-microscopic investigation revealed changes in osteoblast structure (3 types detected) by the degree of development of granular endoplasmic reticulum. In the 2nd and 3d type of osteoblasts the decrease in the quantity of elements of granular endoplasmic reticulum was noted which may be connected with disturbance of biosynthetic processes in cell and fibrillogenesis with maturation of collagenous fibrils and their mineralization. Histo- and ultrastructure of the bone in dysosteogenesis are rather typical and in total with clinico-roentgenological data are informative enough for making diagnosis.

[Sudden death in cardiac myxoma].

Nonmalignant tumour (heart myxoma) is often a cause of sudden death. Morphological investigation of 11 heart myxomas (8 in the left atrium, 1 in the right atrium) was performed. These myxomas were generally attached to endocardium in the area of the oval foramen. Sudden death occurred due to infarction of the brain, heart and other vitally important organs as a result of embolism of greater circulation vessels by disintegrated tumour located at the left side of the heart, then due to lung failure caused by embolism of lesser circulation vessels by tumour located at the right half of the heart, and due to heart failure as a result of occlusion of atrioventricular foramen by big myxoma.

[The establishment of osteogenesis imperfecta for personal identification].

Anatomical, clinical (including X-ray), microscopic, and ultrastructural features of osseous tissue were studied in 32 subjects suffering from congenital osteopsathyrosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, aged 0 to 38 years. The findings showed that bone tissue was sharply rarefied, with the amount of the base substance reduced and the number of osteocytes per unit of its area increased. This sign, typical of the disease in question, is still observed in putrefied corpses. Electron microscopy revealed decrease of granular endoplasmatic reticulum in osteoblasts with impaired maturation of collagen fibrils and their mineralization.

[The morphological changes in the internal organs in hemochromatosis].

Visceral changes were studied by histological and electron-microscopic methods in cadavers of 18 subjects dead from hemochromatosis. Pronounced visceral changes in all cases represented a characteristic tetrad of signs: bronze-colored skin, pigmentary cirrhosis of the liver, involvement of the pancreas, and cardiomyopathy. In forensic medical practice hemochromatosis can be found in subjects who were probably genetically predisposed to it and, as a rule, had a history of alcohol abuse. Among the numerous complications of the disease, the most incident are cardiac pathology (dilatation cardiomyopathy) and diabetes mellitus with concomitant intoxications caused by various inflammations.

[The detection of the traces of old damages to the bones of the cranial vault of the Emperor Nikolaĭ II].

Relevant reports are reviewed, primary medical files analyzed, and the skull of Nicholas II is investigated using roentgenography and computer-aided tomography with the aim of forensic medical diagnosis of traces of an old injury to skull vault bones. The Emperor had a superficial fracture of the skull vault bones. No periosteal callus is formed in the course of healing of such an injury, and the trace of the fracture is not seen beyond the contour of compact plate of the skull vault. The external compact plate at the site of injury was lost after long stay of the skull is soil at the place of burial, and therefore traces of a former injury could not be detected.
