Strength of the Calpha H..O hydrogen bond of amino acid residues.

Although the peptide C(alpha)H group has historically not been thought to form hydrogen bonds within proteins, ab initio quantum calculations show it to be a potent proton donor. Its binding energy to a water molecule lies in the range between 1.9 and 2.5 kcal/mol for nonpolar and polar amino acids; the hydrogen bond (H-bond) involving the charged lysine residue is even stronger than a conventional OH..O interaction. The preferred H-bond lengths are quite uniform, about 3.32 A. Formation of each interaction results in a downfield shift of the bridging hydrogen's chemical shift and a blue shift in the C(alpha)H stretching frequency, potential diagnostics of the presence of such an H-bond within a protein.

Amino Acids↗

Pseudokobusine.

The title compound, hetisan-6,11beta,15beta-triol, C20H27NO3, is a hetisane-type diterpenoid alkaloid. It consists of six six-membered rings and two five-membered rings. The fused-ring system contains three chair, two boat, one distorted boat and two envelope conformations. Intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds are present between the O atoms, with O...O separations of 3.006 (3) and 2.743 (3) A, as well as an O...N intermolecular interaction of 2.887 (3) A.

Bridged-Ring Compounds↗

(24R)-24,25-Dihydroxycycloartan-3-one.

In the title compound, C(30)H(50)O(3), the three six-membered rings adopt chair, twist and twist-boat conformations. The five-membered ring is in a slightly distorted envelope conformation. The substituent on the five-membered ring is in an extended conformation, with its two hydroxyl O atoms forming an intramolecular hydrogen bond. One of these O atoms also forms an intermolecular hydrogen bond with the oxygen of the carbonyl group in a neighbouring molecule.

Effect of fortification of concentrated whey on growth of Kluyveromyces sp.

The effect of fortification of concentrated whey with 0.5% inorganic nitrogen viz. NH4Cl, (NH4)2SO4, NaNO3 and urea, organic nitrogen viz. tryptone, tryptose, peptone and yeast extract and 0.1% metal ions viz. K2HPO4, MgSO4 and FeSO4, on growth stimulation of Kluyveromyces marxianus subsp. marxianus NRRL Y-665, NRRL Y-1195, NRRL Y-2415 and Kluyveromyces marxianus subsp. lactis NRRL Y-1193 were studied. Supplementation with 0.5% (NH4)2SO4, peptone, yeast extract or 0.1% K2HPO4 individually increased the biomass production by 8-20%, 17-25%, 13-14% and 14-17%, respectively. Addition of 0.5% each of (NH4)2SO4, peptone, yeast extract and 0.1% K2HPO4 together is recommended to increase the biomass production by 81-98% for commercial production of single cell protein.
