An autopsy case of a 50 year-old male with Parkinson's disease associated with multiple Lewy bodies in the cerebral cortex was reported. His clinical symptoms began at the age of 26 with the speech and actions indicative of a persecution complex accompanied by irritability and were followed by progressive dementia from the age of 37 and Parkinsonism since the age of 41. He was in a state of akinetic mutism thereafter till his death at the age of 50. Autopsy disclosed in addition to the typical findings of Parkinson's disease in the brain stem multiple intracytoplasmic Lewy bodies in medium-sized neurons of the fifth and sixth layers of the cerebral cortex. They were atypical in the sense that they did not have any haloes. They were especially numerous in the cingulate gyrus. In addition, findings of non-specific neuronal degeneration were obtained in the cerebral cortex such as cellular atrophy with massive deposition of lipofuscin pigments, central chromatolysis, cell loss and cellular gliosis in the third, fifth and sixth layers. These neuronal findings were also prominent in the cingulate gyrus. Such senile changes as senile plaques or granulo-vacuolar degeneration were not found, although there were a few foci of neurofibrillary degeneration in the hippocampal gyrus. Histochemically and electron microscopically, no difference was observed in the constituents of Lewy bodies between the brain stem and the cerebral cortex. Such autopsy findings and a review of the literature indicate that the dementia in this case may be related not only to the presence of Lewy bodies but also to the above-described, non-specific neuronal degeneration in the bilateral cingulate gyri and surrounding frontal gyri. The standpoint of regarding a Parkinson's disease with multiple Lewy bodies in the cerebral cortex as an independent disease entity was criticized.
The effect of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), a potent promoter in epidermal carcinogenesis, on the growth of rat hepatocytes initiated in vivo and transferred into a culture system was investigated. The hepatocytes were isolated by enzymatic perfusion from the rat liver after 12 weeks of acetylaminofluorene feeding or 2--6 weeks of diethylnitrosamine treatment. TPA did not show any promotive effect in terms of the number and size of proliferative epithelial cell foci derived from initiated hepatocytes, in contrast to the remarkable effect of phenobarbital, which is a potent promoter in hepatocarcinogenesis. The results suggest the existence of organ or target cell specificity of promoters in the 2-stage concept of carcinogenesis.

The hepatic cells of rats being fed acetylaminofluorene were transferred into culture at various times. Proliferative hepatocytic foci were obtained from animals treated with the carcinogen for more than 9 weeks. These hepatocytic foci became transplantable and capable of growth in soft agar after 4 to 12 months in culture. Phenobarbital markedly enhanced the growth of these hepatocytes in culture.
A brazilian housewife, descendant of japanese (both parents), 37 years aged, affected with Vogt-Koyanagi's syndrome (uveitis, dysacousia, alopecia, madarosis, poliosis, vitiligo) was treated with prednisone. During the course and at the end of the treatment an almost complete regression of alopecia, poliosis, madarosis and a total involution of the dysacousia could be observed, meanwhile the vitiligo and the sequels of uveitis remained unchanged. Taking into account that Vogt-Koyanagi's syndrome is susceptible of expontaneous involution, no definitive conclusion about the efficiency of therapeutic agent may be drawn in this singular case. However, it must be considered as valid the possibility of a favourable action of a systemic treatment with corticosteroides in the initial stages of the disease chiefly for preventing its more harmful consequences, i.e. deafness and blindness.
Neural crest cells in the pre- and postnatal development of mice showed a specific sensitivity to mitomycin C. In mice injected with mitomycin C 24-48 h after birth and surviving up to the 9th day, a free or attached denticle in the pulp and a fibroma or excessive cell proliferation in the dental follicle or the periodontal ligament were seen; further, a dentinoma developed.
In suckling mice injected with steroids, multiple tumors occurred in the sites where neural crest cells normally are present. It is speculated that the phase of the cell cycle of the neural crest cells may have something to do with its cell surface and cellular phenotypic expression in the system mediated by cyclic AMP.

In suckling mice injected intraperitoneally with mitomycin C on the 1st to 5th day after birth and sacrificed in the course of 24 or 48 h after injection, mastocytosis occurred in the oral mucosa membrane, skin of the trunk or extremities and bone marrow of extremities.
The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) from fish electric organ is well characterized and is known to consist of five subunits present in a molar stoichiometry of alpha 2 beta gamma delta (reviewed in refs 1-3). The mammalian skeletal muscle AChR is thought to have a similar subunit structure. We have recently elucidated the primary structures of the alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-subunit precursors of the Torpedo californica AChR by cloning and sequencing cDNAs for these polypeptides; cDNA sequences for the gamma-subunit precursor of the T. californica AChR and the alpha-subunit precursor of the Torpedo marmorata AChR have also been reported by other groups. The four subunits exhibit conspicuous sequence homology and are similar in hydrophilicity profile and predicted secondary structure, thus being most probably oriented in a pseudosymmetric fashion across the membrane. The transmembrane topology of the subunit molecules and the locations of functionally important regions, such as the acetylcholine binding site and the trans-membrane segments which may be involved in the ionic channel, have been proposed. We have now cloned cDNA for the alpha-subunit precursor of the calf skeletal muscle AChR and a human genomic DNA segment containing the corresponding gene. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the cloned DNAs has revealed the primary structures of the calf and human AChR alpha-subunit precursors, which exhibit marked sequence homology with their Torpedo counterpart. The protein-coding sequence of the human AChR alpha-subunit precursor gene is divided by eight introns into nine exons, which seem to correspond to different structural and functional domains of the subunit precursor molecule.
