Inflammatory activities of synovial fluids from rheumatoid- and osteo-arthritis to guinea pig skin.

For initial study to examine the chemical pathogenesis of rheumatoid and non-rheumatoid arthritis, the nature and inflammatory activities of 12 synovial fluids from rheumatoid arthritis and 10 from osteoarthritis were studied. Both rheumatoid and non-rheumatoid synovial fluids were found to have high protein concentration, acid and neutral protease activities. When injected 0.1 ml intradermally to normal guinea pig skin, both synovial fluids induced a strong vascular permeability at 0 minutes, mild one at 60 minutes, and mild inflammation which comprised histologically moderate leukocyte infiltration around the venules, swelling of venular endothelial cells, edema, and degeneration of collagen fibrils in the deep dermis of the guinea pig skin 4 hours following the injection. However, these parameters of inflammation induced by synovial fluids from both arthritis were of same degree in intensity. The identification of chemical mediators of inflammation in the synovial fluids of both arthritis requires further study.

New plastic joints for plastic orthoses.

Plastic joints for orthoses have more advantages than metal joints. They are lightweight, noiseless comfortable to use, rust proof, corrosion free, and radiolucent. Two types of plastic joints were developed by the authors, one for the ankle joint and the other for the knee joint, elbow joint or hip joint. Polypropylene was chosen as the joint material because of its appropriate flexibility and toughness.

Contractures of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles in healthy male adult.

We studied the extensibility of the quadriceps muscle and the hamstring muscles in 822 healthy male adults. 1) Extensibility of the quadriceps muscle The average angle of the buttock elevation phenomenon (B.E.P.) was 124.0 degrees +/- 16.71 on the right leg and 122.2 degrees +/- 19.75 on the left leg. And the contracture of the quadriceps (B.E.P. less than or equal to 100 degrees) was found in 16.1% of them. 2) Extensibility of the hamstring muscles The average angle of the straight leg raising test (S.L.R.) was 79.3 degrees +/- 9.56 on the right leg and 79.9 degrees +/- 9.56 on the left leg. And the contracture of the hamstrings (S.L.R. less than 70 degrees) was found in 10.3% of them.

Formyl-ended heterobifunctional poly(ethylene oxide): synthesis of poly(ethylene oxide) with a formyl group at one end and a hydroxyl group at the other end.

Well-defined poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with a formyl group at one end and a hydroxyl group at the other terminus was synthesized by the anionic ring opening polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) with a new organometallic initiator possessing an acetal moiety, potassium 3,3-diethoxypropyl alkoxide. Hydrolysis of the acetal moiety produced a formyl group-terminated heterobifunctional PEO with a hydroxyl group at the other end.
