[Left ventricular function of patients with chronic nonspecific lung diseases].

Echocardiographic studies of left ventricular function were carried out in 20 patients with chronic unspecific pulmonary diseases (CUPD). These patients showed no true left ventricular myocardial hypertrophy, while electrocardiographic signs of the latter might be related to the recording of potentials from the hypertrophic ventricular septum produced by positional cardiac changes due to pulmonary emphysema. In addition to septal hypertrophy, end diastolic left ventricular size was shown to be diminished. A hypothesis is proposed for the pathogenesis of left ventricular pumping disorders associated with CUPD.

[Current approaches to the early diagnosis of primary subacute infectious endocarditis].

A study of 22 patients with a diagnosis of primary infectious endocarditis based on clinical, laboratory and instrumental (electro-, phono- and echocardiography) investigation showed the fever syndrome and rigors to be the main clinical manifestations of the disease. Echocardiography can contribute to its early diagnosis, while increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate remains the most valuable diagnostic test.

[Dilatation (congestive) cardiomyopathy: clinical aspects, diagnosis and treatment].

Clinical and electrocardiographic manifestations of congestive cardiomyopathy are considered on the basis of observations of 25 patients with this pathology of the myocardium. No clinico-electrocardiographic signs specific for this disease were found. Most characteristic were cardiomegaly, congestive cardiac failure and various disturbances of rhythm and conductivity. Thromboembolic complications in the lung and kidney vessels are frequently found. Cardiac glycosides, saluretics and vasodilators were employed in the treatment of patients with congestive cardiomyopathy but the prognosis was usually poor.
