[Clinical neuropsychological investigation and personality assessment in alcohol abuse].

In Norway, clinical neuropsychology is approved as an exclusive speciality in psychology. Clinical neuropsychological assessment is a well-proven method for which thorough validation studies and international norms are available. The method has a clear application in the assessment of dysfunctions and resources of alcohol-dependent inpatients. Cross-national comparisons show that neuropsychological findings are fairly consistent for alcohol-abusing individuals. A neuropsychological frame of reference is essential for secondary prevention among important groups. Some areas of central interest include alcohol and drug abuse among the elderly, occupational exposure to solvents, impulsiveness and violence, residual Attention Deficit Disorders, HIV/AIDS conditions, and other neuropsychiatric conditions.

Cerebellar lesion, polyneuropathy and mental dysfunction in a seaman working on chemical tankers.

A seaman with symptoms and signs from the nervous system was examined. He had symptoms and signs of affection of his mental status, cerebellum and peripheral nerves. He had been working on tankers for 31 years, and had regularly been exposed to different organic solvents during loading, unloading and cleaning of the tanks. As no other disease was present in this patient, the existence of a chronic organic solvent intoxication syndrome was suggested.

Reports from research centres--20. Alcohol research at the Hjellestad Clinic.

Treatment and research efforts at the Hjellestad Clinic are based on a biobehavioural model of the addictions. The treatment program encompasses life-style changes and relapse prevention, and extensive assessment for the purpose of the treatment choices. The clinic is treating nearly 1500 patients a year. Psychological and medical research projects have included experimental drinking studies, psychopharmacological and biomedical studies, treatment evaluations, studies of neuropsychological assessment, studies of personality subtypes, studies of violence related to alcohol and drugs, and investigations of women alcoholics. A new research laboratory houses an experimental bar, and state-of-the-art facilities for psychophysiological and neuropsychological testing. The Hjellestad Clinic is the only Norwegian centre for clinical and experimental research on the addictions from a psycho-physiological as well as behavioral and cognitive perspective. In addition, a national educational program offers theoretical and practical training for professionals and paraprofessionals in the addictions in co-operation with the University of Bergen. Training in the addictions and internships for psychology students at the University of Bergen is provided at the Clinic. The centre has established connections with centres in Scandinavia, England, Canada and the U.S., through visiting scholars and study trips. (The centre has an especially strong liaison with the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies.)

Alcohol misuse and neuropsychological deficits in men.

The 111 men alcoholics studied were of average intelligence or better and showed no gross memory deficit, but did show deficits on the Category, Tactual Performance and Trail Making Tests and the Impairment Index of the Halstead-Reitan neuropsychological test battery. Impairment of the fronto-limbic-diencephalic system may explain the findings.
