Affinity and concentration of anti-HIV antibodies in asymptomatic and symptomatic HIV infection.

A novel method based on dose-response curve of antibodies and employing a hyperbolic function for its description was used for the assessment of the affinity and concentration of anti-HIV antibodies in eighteen anti-HIV positive males. The patients were followed up for a period of 8 months to 5 years and affinity and concentration of antibodies were measured at least twice, at the beginning and at the end of the observation period. No correlation between antibodies affinity and the clinical stage of infection was observed, however, concentration of antibodies decreased rapidly in AIDS.

[Value of routine biochemical investigations for detection of liver injury in alcoholics during abstinence].

In 42 alcoholics biopsy of the liver was done during the period of abstinence and the following biochemical investigations were carried out at the same time: AspAT, A1AT, GGTP, alkaline phosphatase activity, total serum protein level, protein electrophoretic fractions, levels of urea and fibrinogen, prothrombin index and white blood cell count. In these investigations determination of transaminase activity was found to be most sensitive in the detection of hepatocellular damage. In some patients no abnormalities were found in biochemical investigations despite presence of high-grade changes in the liver in histological examination.

[Chronic active hepatitis in alcoholics].

In 42 chronic alcohol abusers liver biopsy was performed and chronic active hepatitis was diagnosed in 11 cases. In 4 cases etiology could be attributed to chronic HBV infection--they were positive for HBsAg in serum, three were positive for HBeAg and one case had anti-delta antibodies. In 7 cases etiology was obscure, at least in some of them alcohol could have been the underlying factor. Liver disease in these particular cases was clinically more severe than chronic active hepatitis due to infection with HBV and non-A, non-B viruses in non-drinkers. Two cases progressed into liver decompensation despite 1 and 2 years of abstinence, respectively. Chronic active hepatitis in alcoholics constitutes a frequent pathology, its etiology is variable, in some cases obscure.

[Development of autoimmune chronic active hepatitis after acute hepatitis B].

A case of the autoimmunological chronic active hepatitis following the acute HBV infection is presented. A 24-year female patient underwent HBV infection and was hospitalized one year later due to persistent abnormalities in the activity of aminotransferases. Immunosuppressive therapy improved the results of the liver functioning tests and histological picture of the liver. An appropriate diagnosis is of importance as the chronic autoimmunological hepatitis respond to the treatment with corticosteroids. Such a treatment produced an improvement in the presented case.

[Markers of hepatitis A infection in drug addicts].

Prevalence of HAV infection markers was studied in 100 drug addicts whose sera were collected between 1988 and 1989. Anti-HAV antibodies were found in 65 (65%) of the tested drug addicts and in 55% of the individuals serving as the control group. No correlation between the presence of HAV infection markers, and sex, duration of drug abuse or HIV status was seen. However, drug addicts with anti-HAV antibodies were older than those without these antibodies. There was no difference in a mean titre of anti-CMV and anti-HSV type 1 antibodies between the individuals with and without HAV infection markers. It suggests that the tested markers are specific for HAV infection.

[Mechanism of cell infection with HIV].

The mechanisms of HIV infection of target cells are described. Particularly the role of three types of cell receptors, which participate in the process of virus-cell interactions: CD4 protein, receptor for Fc fragment of antibodies and complement receptors are discussed. The variability of the virus variants, which determines the virus tropism and cytotoxic properties towards specific cell types is stressed.

[Appearance of thrombocytopenia in patients infected with HIV].

Results of quantitative determinations of thrombocytes and selected, basal immune parameters in 263 HIV infected subjects are presented. A decrease in the platelet count was observed more frequently in symptomatic subjects, including AIDS patients, than in asymptomatic HIV carriers or patients with generalized lymphadenopathy only. A significant correlation between thrombocyte number and percentage and number of CD4+ lymphocyte and CD4+/CD8+ lymphocyte ratio was found only in the group of symptomatic subjects. The mechanisms responsible for thrombocytopenia in HIV infected patients ore discussed in details.
