The integrity of the bladder neck was assessed in 98 continent women. Radiological and physiological evidence showed that half of these women had an incompetent bladder neck, but they were still continent. These data devalue the urodynamic finding of an incompetent bladder neck as an indication for surgery for incontinence and question the physiological importance of the internal sphincter.
Thirty postmenopausal women with rheumatoid disease were investigated with skin biopsies and radiological measurements of skin thickness. When compared with menopausal-age-matched controls, the rheumatoid patients had significantly reduced skin collagen content and increased skin thickness.
In a prospective study, 200 patients with accurate menstrual data, assessed clinically and by early ultrasound, recorded their date of quickening. Fetal movements were first noted by primigravidae at a mean gestation of 19.04 weeks (SD 1.5) and by multigravidae at 17.4 weeks (SD 1.7). Since the range in both groups was wide: 15-22 weeks for primigravidae and 14-22 weeks for multigravidae, quickening was of limited value in estimating gestational age.
