IL-2 receptor gene expression and IL-2 production by human preterm newborns' cells.

IL-2 receptor (IL-2R) gene expression in human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells (CBMC) of preterm and term newborns was examined following stimulation for 18 h with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and compared with that of adult peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC; mothers and control group). mRNA for IL-2R could not be detected in CBMC of preterm infants, whereas the mRNA levels for IL-2R found in full term neonates were similar to those observed in PBMC of adults. IL-2 activity in conditioned medium (CM) of mononuclear cells stimulated with either optimal or suboptimal PHA concentrations for 24 h and 48 h was also determined. At 24 h of stimulation, IL-2 activity found in CM obtained from CBMC of preterm and term newborns was significantly higher than that found in CM of adults' PBMC. A further enhancement of IL-2 activity (six to eight times) was observed in CM of preterm and term cells stimulated for 48 h, whereas no significant difference was found in IL-2 activity in CM from adult cells tested at the two incubation periods. The present findings may provide an additional explanation for the impaired function of the immune system, and the high susceptibility to infections observed in preterm newborns.

Supplemental Food Program: effects on health and pregnancy outcome.

To determine the effect of participation in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children on use of health care, health-related practices, health knowledge, and pregnancy outcome, a total of 519 pregnant women were interviewed during public health department clinics in six Alabama counties. Of the sample, 341 women were participants in the WIC program and were therefore at nutritional risk; 178 were control subjects (nonparticipants) who were not at nutritional risk. There were no significant differences in pregnancy outcome between the two groups. In fact, mean birth weight was identical (7.13 lb), and mean weight gain for WIC participants was 25.8 lb, compared to 24.9 for controls. Other findings were less positive, however. Utilization patterns and health-related practices differed little between groups. There was no significant difference in the percentage of women planning to nurse. Significantly more WIC participants had discussed nursing, but significantly fewer felt they knew how to nurse. WIC is effective in overcoming nutritional risk and improving pregnancy outcome, but its educational component needs to be strengthened.

Mental disorders among physical disability determination patients.

Persons claiming physical disability who were evaluated at a primary care health center in a small southern city were administered the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. Fifty-six per cent of the 43 patients were found to have one or more psychiatric disorders. The relationship between physical disability and psychiatric disorders needs to be recognized in the disability evaluation system.

Dynamic imaging of the respiratory cycle with 81mKr.

To define the regional ventilation of the human lung, subjects were monitored with a gamma camera, while breathing air labeled with radioactive 81mKr which is being continuously eluted from a generator. The information observed is displayed as a reiterated multiframe moving picture. This is accomplished by storing the information from multiple breaths, selecting acceptable cycles (determined by the duration of inspiration and expiration and the amplitude to extremes of the cycles), and normalizing the usable information and converting the summed data into sequential frames, which are repeatedly shown on a video screen from computer memory.

Individual differences among cocaine users.

The present study examined whether individual differences in personality could differentiate two types of cocaine users. We hypothesized that self-medicators (SM) use cocaine as a way to alleviate their dysphoric moods, whereas sensation seekers (SS), in contrast, use cocaine primarily to engender positive mood states. Eighteen male cocaine users were classified based on two dimensions of the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire. SM were defined by having high harm avoidance (>17) and low novelty-seeking scores (<18), and SS by high novelty-seeking (>18) and low harm-avoidance scores (<17). It was predicted that SM would report higher depression and anxiety than would SS, and would also exhibit a brain activity pattern similar to that found in clinical depression. The results showed that SM reported higher anxiety than SS, F(1, 8) = 27.5, p < .001, but did not differ in depression. SM exhibited decreased blood flow within the left frontal lobes, F(1, 10) = 6.78, p < .05, similar to what has been observed in major depressive disorder. These findings suggest the importance of attending to individual differences in the motivation for cocaine use so that treatment can be targeted more effectively.
